Adventures with Chicken

13

Ewwwwwww…

Ew you guys. Ew.

Background: We’re having chicken tonight and I forgot to put out two chicken breasts to de-frost on the counter this morning (I know that’s bad, but I don’t care – when I forget to de-frost chicken in the fridge two days ahead of time, yes, I de-frost on the counter. It’s true.) so I called Ben on my way to work and asked him if he would put the chicken breasts out. Like a good kitchen helper, he said he would :)

The Scene: It’s 4:30 and I arrive home. I climb the stairs to the kitchen and see a paper towel lying over a plate. “Oh,” I think, “those must be the chicken breasts. Ben is so nice.” Mmmm…yeah…I get closer and realize that the paper towel has soaked up all the juices from the de-frosted chickens and has distributed them all over my entire kitchen. AHHH!!! Yes! Raw chicken juices free-flowing over my entire kitchen! Over the countertops, over the clean dishes in the dishwasher that were air drying with the door open, over the floor, over the rug in front of the sink – everywhere! Sickening.

Actions Taken:I reel in my gag reflexes and start the clean up process. Oh – not before stepping in some chicken juice though. That’s right, I have sticky chicken foot now which no amount of scrubbing will take away :( I finally got it all cleaned up, sanitized the afflicted areas with about 1/2 a bottle of lysol kitchen cleaner, put the rug in the washer and re-started the dishwasher…but…there’s still a mysterious chicken juice leak coming out of the corner! I can’t find the source people! Waaaaaahhhhahahaha…ugh, blech, ick.

Needless to say, my run was canceled. Although maybe it’s for the best – there’s some dark clouds rolling in right now. I got a mom walk in this morning too, so I’m feeling ok.

Disclaimer: I had full permission to re-tell this story – I am not throwing Ben under the raw, chicken-juice infested bus! Plus, bless his heart, he was just trying to help. Maybe next time I’ll just de-frost in the microwave ;)

Well, onto dinner my friends. I loved those Panko Crusted Chicken Tenders I made last week so much – well, I made them again…slightly modified, of course.

About a month ago, I saw a jar of Franks Buffalo Sauceat the store and picked it up…intrigued by the possibilities. Possibilities came to a head tonight with…Baked Buffalo Chicken Tenders! mmmm!

I cut the aforementioned chicken breasts into tenders, pounded them out slightly and marinated them in the buffalo sauce.

While the tenders were marinating, I made some baked fries! I was going for “healthy bar and grille” :) I cut up four, small potatoes into “fry” shapes and tossed them with a tad bit of light Italian salad dressing and a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. Really, you don’t need a lot of either of these ingredients to get a good crisp on these! I baked them at 425 for 13-14 minutes a side and finished them under the broiler.

While the fries were baking, I took the tenders out of the marinade, dipped them into some panko bread crumbs seasoned with S&P and garlic powder, and when the fries were done, baked them at 350 degrees for 12 minutes, flipping half way through. I finished them off with a blast from the broiler so they could reallllly get their crisp on. And they did!

Aaaand, just so I could feel really good about this meal, I tossed some asparagus with a tiny bit of olive oil, S&P and garlic powder, then roasted them in with the chicken tenders. :)

What a hit friends! We could have been at Hooters! Which I made my first visit to while in San Francisco earlier this Spring. I know, I know. Of the literally thousandsof incredible, unique and top-notch dining establishments that we could have picked in San Fran – we chose Hooters. To be fair, they had an incredible happy hour, which is what we were really there to take advantage of. Plus…Ben kind of liked our waitress too ;) Seriously though, these were so easy and crunchy and spicayyyyy. Not too spicy though – you know I don’t like that!

So while I’m still cleaning chicken juice off my feet – tell me – what’s your latest kitchen disaster?!

hahaha, despite the yucky chicken juices all over, your meal looks so yummy!! my most recent kitchen disaster was when I tried to strain my own yogurt.. I didn’t have a cheesecloth or a paper towel, so I used those tiny napkins you get at restaurants and plopped some yogurt on it. The next morning, my yogurt was definitely thicker, but the liquid hadn’t drained through the napkin! I was left with soggy, disintegrating napkins mixed with yogurt. Needless to say… I didn’t get a yummy meal out of it!

Oh no!! That sucks about your chicken. I have had something similar to that happen before, but not nearly as bad!!

PS: I can’t stop staring at your pics. If I had read this post earlier that is exactly what I would have for dinner tonight, but now I will be having it tomorrow night. So thank you for helping me choose what I’m having for dinner tomorrow night! I’m going to take the chicken out now!!

Ahh what a mess! One time I was baking banana bread in a new silicone bread pan thingy. Well, those things are NOT stable. I was putting it in the oven and it totally collapsed out from under itself getting banana bread batter all over the oven, floor…and me. It was just lovely!

Too bad about the chicken :-( I usually just defrost mine in the microwave even though it affects texture and taste a bit.

    Those fries look great.

UGH! Sorry about the chicken juice everywhere! :(

Dont you love Franks Buffalo??? I’m a die hard Franks Original fan, but the Buffalo is great on chicken – or for dipping grill cheese!

OMG I would have freaked out! Raw meat is probably the grossest thing to me! Whenever I cut chicken it’s with a fork and knife…I refuse to touch it!

Sorry your run got cancelled…it’s a good think you didn’t get wet though!

I love roasting asparagus that way! Sometimes I will sprinkle a bit of parmesan cheese over it a few minutes before it is done.

I made banana nut muffins last night and as I took them from the oven, half of them collapsed into themselves….

I agree Rachel! Raw meat is disgusting. Last time I was making a smoothie, I apparently did not have the lid on tight on the blender and strawberries, ice and yogurt went everywhere! It was something out of a movie or sit com. There were pink spots all over me and my kitchen walls and even ceiling. It was terrible, but funny at the same time!

I can’t think of a crazy kitchen disaster for me, but one time my husband and I were vacationing in the mountains and he, being the nice guy he is, decided to load up the dishwasher so we could have a relaxing evening. Little did I know, he put LIQUID DISH SOAP in the dishwasher and there were bubbles EVERYWHERE! It took forever to clean up and we didn’t want to touch the dishwasher again.

I had to cut him some slack though because he grew up WITHOUT a dishwasher and just saw “dish soap” on the label and assumed it would work. Don’t they have fine print on there NOT to use in a dishwasher? Oh well … memories are good!

Those chicken tenders look amazing! I’m adding hot sauce to my grocery list right now!

Ew gross! The end product looks really good though! I’ll have to try and make that for the hubby! Worst cooking experience? Forgetting to defrost the turkey the day of Thanksgiving with company coming over! Whoops! Running that thing under warm water an entire morning sucked! And those things are messy!

Megan: Oh no!! I’ve always wanted to strain my own yogurt too – now I know not to use bar napkins!

Amber: Good luck with your chicken! :D

Courtney: OMG how SAD!! I’ve heard those silicone baking items can be super flimsy :(

Alison: I know – I think I’m going to have to suffer w/ half defrosted microwave chicken from now on!!

Allison: UGH the buffalo was INCREDIBLE!!! Amazing call on the dippage by they way!!

Rachel: That is friggin hilarious…hahahaha a knife and fork. Oh well, you gotta do what you gotta do right? ;)

Lexi: Bummer about your muffins!! I bet they still tasted great though!

Valerie: OH. NO.!!!!! Sometimes when things are that disasterous – the only thing you can do is laugh!

Kristilyn: My brother did that once too! My poor mom was cleaning suds up for HOURS :(

    Aprillove: TRUE BUMMER!!!!

I had a chicken adventure tonight. Hubby bought boneless skinless 3days ago stored it in the fridge. He plans on cooking it tomorrow. I know I told him he is taking a big chance be he insists it will be ok. He asked me to marinade it tonight so he could cook it tomorrow. I was being so careful and washing my hands and counter often. I even washed the outside of the ziplock bat with soap just incase. As I went to place the bag of chicken in the fridge I noticed it was soapy inside. I took the chicken out rinsed well put it in a new bag with new marinade. I am afraid of that chicken now. Do you think it will be ok?
