Remember Memorial Day

Good morning everyone – Happy Memorial Day!

It’s easy to forget the real reason for celebrating Memorial Day among a weekend full of relaxation, BBQs and getaways. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have lost their lives serving our Nation and really, the men and women who continually put their lives on the line to protect you and me. These people deserve our utmost respect – so try and spend a couple minutes today thinking about them and how lucky we are they put our lives before theirs.

So I updated my Hal Higdon half marathon training schedule for this week and today I was slated for a 4.25 mile run, so I got up early to get ‘er done! When I got home I was HOT and needed something cold and refreshing to eat, so I decided to try some Stonyfield Farms Oikos Greek Yogurt that I got in the mail!

I have been hearing about Oikos yogurt for ages and ages on the blogs that I read and haven’t been able to find this brand of Greek yogurt anywhere in my area – so you can imagine my delight when I was sent some in the mail to try!

What’s the difference between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt you may be asking? Well, I have an answer! Per Oikos Organic:

Called “yiaourti” in Greece, Greek yogurt is creamier than regular yogurt. Authentic Greek yogurt like ours owes its extra creaminess to a centuries-old straining process that removes the whey (liquid) from the yogurt.”

Basically it’s regular yogurt that’s been strained to remove all the liquid which results in a reallllly thick and creamy yogurt – YUM!!!

So for breakfast I tried a Vanilla Oikos and ate it with some fresh watermelon, kiwi and a sliced apple for dipping. I added some cinnamon to the yogurt because I am a cinnamon addict and because I love the combo of cinnamon and vanilla.

OMG this was so thick and creamy!

And 15g of protein – can you believe that?! Plus this yogurt is all organic, which I really dig.

The straining intensifies the “sour” flavor of the yogurt, so the sweet apple went really well as a dipper in this flavor.

I’m so excited to have gotten a chance to try this yogurt…although I fear going back to regular yogurt when I run out of Oikos might be tough!

Soooo, this is weird, I have a full day ahead of me with nothing to do – I got all my chores and errands done in the past two days so I’m kind of twiddling my thumbs right now! Well I guess I do have to make it to the grocery store at some point today and we’re heading over to Ben’s parent’s house for a BBQ in a little bit…so scratch that – I do have stuff to do, ha!

Oh you guys – I saw Angels and Demons yesterday! Couple of things:

  1. They are now charging full price for movie admission at 2:00pm. Ummm I laughed in the ticket guys’ face. Like, laughed audibly. That is modern day robbery I tell you! Since when did matinee prices end at TWO?!
  2. The movie was awesome!!! It was a lot more gory than I expected it to be – but I thought it was one of the better book turned movie, movies!! I definitely give it a thumbs up!!

Do you bring your own snacks to movies? Usually if we’re in a candy mood, Ben and I will bring out own from a gas station or something. But it we’re craving popcorn – it’s got to be from the theater concession stands. Nothing else will do!

Have a great Monday everyone! Last day ‘til it’s back to the grind!

Love Oikos! I had some vanilla for breakfast w/ my Honey Puffins & Mesa Sunrise.

We do bring our own snacks to the movies most of the time. We buy ours at the gas station, too or bring a bar of some kind.

I love Oikos, and that fresh fruit looks delicious! I’ve never tried dipping the appe in the Oikos before– I’ll have to try that :) I know, I’m such a greek yogurt addict now. I tried eating regular yogurt a few weeks ago, and I thought it was nasty! I love my greek yogurt!

I rarely go see movies at the theater. That’s crazy they’re charging full price at 2 now! I usually don’t snack on anything during the movie, but if I think I’ll want to snack, I’ll bring something. Glad to hear Angels and Demons was good!

  3. LOVE Greek yogurt!!! When you run out, you can make your own by straining regular plain yogurt through cheesecloth!
