Grocery Shopping with Iowa Girl Eats

0

Good afternoon!

Well, I’ve had a productive Sunday so far – how about you?!

I got up at a leisurely hour, drank some delicious coffee and made some sugar cookies with a new recipe I’ve been wanting to try! The dough is chilling in the fridge – I like to let my cookie dough rest it least a day before I bake them – and the mixing bowl is still chilling on the base…I can’t get it off!!!! Ben and I have both tried to wrench it loose with no luck, so we’re just letting it sit there for now…

For lunch, we headed over to my parent’s – boy was it ever delish!! My Mom had Maid Rite Sandwiches, Barley Salad and fresh Watermelon and Red Grapes ready for us. Ohhhhhhhh soooooo gooooood!

Do you guys have Maid Rite shops where you live? Basically they are little restaurants that serve these “loose meat” sandwiches. They are so good!

This barley salad was SO colorful and SO delicious. The flavors went perfectly together and the textures were all amazing.

Nothing beats fresh fruit – NOTHING!

And of course…DESSERT! Which was Strawberry Surprise. Or something like that…I can’t remember what exactly it was called, but basically it was torn up angel food cake, fresh strawberries, sweetened condensed milk and whip cream.

DEE-light-FULL. Small emphasis on the “light”…this was no diet food! But oh, how tasty it was… :D

Thanks for another fabulous lunch Mom! You’re the best!

After lunch I went grocery shopping…want to see my loot??

Produce:

IMG_2586

  • Mixed lettuce
  • Braeburn apples
  • Cauliflower
  • Red grapes
  • Green beans
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Fresh garlic
  • Mango
  • Lemon
  • Avocado
  • Bananas

Everything else:

  • Water coolers – basically carbonated, flavored waters that are good for combating sweet cravings!
  • Panko bread crumbs
  • Diet Mt. Dews for Ben and I’s Sunday treat
  • Dried apricots
  • Skim milk
  • Frozen chicken breasts
  • Sliced almonds
  • Black beans
  • Brown rice
  • Pork Chops

Grand Total: $42

Forty-two dollars – that’s it! I feel like that’s pretty good! Every week I try and beat the previous weeks’ total. I didn’t this time because I had to buy the chicken breasts…oh well – next week should be low!

Ok – I’m off to relax and hydrate. I have a 6 mile run on the agenda for later today and it is HOT! I haven’t run six miles since around this time last year – isn’t that crazy! I’ve consistently been running 5.15 miles because there’s a really convenient turnaround point on my trail that will give me that total – but today I’ll be blowing past that to get that total up to 6 miles! Wish me luck!!

Wow – $42 for a week’s worth of groceries?! My husband and I spend about $150 a week! We both eat every meal at home (or bing lunch to work). I guess we reeeeally like to eat because every Friday night the pantry is empty again!

Hi! Love the salad…it’s so pretty! Do you know what the recipe is? I was just thinking about making something along those lines for supper one night this week. And $42…coupons? I’m so impressed. I get in trouble with the hub just about every week. I’m trying to balance shopping smart with shopping healthy…along with my desire to cook new and interesting things. It’s hard!

I know it really is hard when you’re wanting to try new things!! I just buy what’s on sale and consider myself lucky if a cool, new ingredient is on sale! I’ll ask my mom for the recipe of the salad!
