5 Pieces of Advice from Obama’s Health Gurus

28

Good morning all!

I feel like I just had a feast! I busted out a big plate (I usually use small plates) and had Almond Butter & Jelly Toast, Scrambled Eggs & a Sliced Peach.

IMG_8422

That’s two slices of whole wheat bread, slathered in Sugar-Free Raspberry Jam & Almond Butter.

IMG_8427

One juicy-sweet, sliced Peach.

And three Egg Whites whisked up with some pepper and cooked in non-stick cooking spray.

IMG_8432

Basically I ate this entire breakfast for about the same amount of calories that’s in one slice of Starbuck’s Pumpkin Loaf. While delicious – I’ll take my voluminous breakfast any day :)

I packed a very “lunchbox” type of lunch today, aka – no salad! I know! This actually feels weird – I eat a salad almost everyday! Instead I’ll be enjoying:

Almond Butter Sandwich + WildBlueberry PURE Bar:

Mmmm two times the almond butter dosage in one day…yes!

I’ve also got some deeelicious Watermelon.

A deeeeelicious gigantic container of watermelon! :D

So I read this great article on Glamour.com yesterday – Great Advice For You From the President’s Health Gurus. It’s an article with health advice from President Obama’s top health officials – who all happen to be women! Some advice that I particularly liked:

1. Find a [healthy] habit you can stick with. -Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services

We’re human – we don’t have to do it all, or have it all. If you only have one healthy habit that you stick to regularly – that’s better than nothing! My healthy habit is going on a walk every morning with my Mom :)

2. Take care of your bones. -Margaret Hamburg, M.D., Commissioner of the FDA

You’ve only got one body in this lifetime – take care of it! Good sources of calcium include milk, low-fat yogurt, kale, figs (figs!!), tofu, salmon & spinach.

3. Get annual exams by a doctor. –Dr. Hamburg.

I think Nike says it best – JUST DO IT!

4. Back away from the vending machine. -Nancy-Ann DeParle, Director of the White House Office of Health Reform

I can’t think of a single thing in my office’s vending machine that’s better than bringing my own, healthy snack option such as: an apple, cottage cheese, a packet of oatmeal, carrots & hummus, yogurt, etc. Plan ahead and bring your own snacks to work/school, to avoid the pitfalls of vendo-land!

5. Do Not Smoke! –The whole health team!

Just say no, my friends!

What do you think – do you agree with this advice? Check out the complete list, here.

Have a happy humpday all – it’s already Wednesday – yahoo!

The advice is great! Sometimes there are semi-healthy vending machine options (but you’re better off bringing your own).
    I’m 5’5 1/2″

i got my magazine yesterday and literally would not put it down. I just wanted it to never end! i’m 5’2″ but i wear heels practically every day! which is very deceiving to most people. One girl didn’t realize i was that short until i took my shoes off!

ohhhh i love eating breakfasts that are big – sometimes when i am really hankering from a scone (my fave)…i think okay a 450 calorie scone or a kick arse bowl of overnight oats? a lot of the time, the oats win!

5’7 baby…i used to hate being tall but now i love it! i wouldn’t even mind another inch or two :)

Such very basic advice but so true. Sometimes it just needs to be said again. I love running but I tell friends who don’t that they don’t have to do it just because it’s good for them…do what you love so you’ll stick with it.

    I’m 5’6″ according to my Driver’s License. I think I’m more like 5’5″ and a 1/2 but I like to round up. I feel taller :-)

I think that is all great advice! Especially the healthy habit. It can even be something little, like parking way out in BFE (like I do) when you go to the grocery!

I’m a tall glass of water – 5’9″. I used to haaaate being tall, but I’ve grown to love it. Although it limits me with the boys when I wear ‘dem heels!

pshhh … you call that a feast ?? WEAK SAUCE! looks like a normal sized bfast to me!

hehe only kidding :p … well, sort of. It looks like a perfectly normal, balanced breakfast :) i would take it over a starbucks baked good ANY DAY .. home made though … that might be another story :p

    Great tips!

I’m 5’7″. It took me forever to get used to being tall!

Girl that breakfast plate looks amazing! I’d rather have more food with the same amount of cals, then a single slice of bread too! :)

Uh and a day without a salad for lunch is not a good day for me! hahah just kidding, seeing as yesterday that was me…hope you have a good day today

I’m 5’6″ which isn’t tall BUT all my friends are shorter – around 5’2″ so I feel so much taller around them!!!

I’m a total volume eater too. I like to graze too much to pack all my calories in a small little piece of bread :) .

    I’m 5’7″. Mid-range on the height scale!

amen for volume!! I have been on a PB and agave kick lately for breakfast…with a GM!

    I’m 5’8″ 3/4 yes I don’t want to quite be 5’9″

I’m 5’5″ but have always wanted to be a little taller!
I would rather have a more volume based breakfast than a “treat” and waste those calories! And you get so much more food!

    Great advice!

    I am 5’7″ tall.

I would also rather have a breakfast like yours that a slice of “bread” or treat. Volume based is so much more satisfying to me.

Yummy looking breakfast!!! I can’t believe you’re only 5’2” – for some reason I had an image of you that you were really tall! I’m 5’6”…so not huge or anything, but not short.

Thanks for posting a few health tips from Obama!

Those are pretty basic tips – but good nonetheless. That’s awesome that you go on a walk with your mum every day. I’m 5’7!

    {P.S. Thanks for the comment on my blog – I had no idea that you read it!}

    I’m 5’2 too!!!

I love being this height. I’m naturally small by nature and I think if I were any taller, I would just look weird.

Breaks today looks so wonderful and entirely fulfilling.

Hope the day was perfect for you my dear!

I think those are some great, common-sense tips!

I’m 5’10″. I’m a tall girl, and love it! The only bad part is finding pants and shirts that are long enough. I have a skewed perspective of people’s heights. My dad is 6’6″ and my brothers are 6’3″ and 6’5″. I think of my mom as “average” at 5’7″, and we all think my hubby is on the short side at 6’0″.
