Heeeeello!
I took a short hiatus from the blog yesterday, because well, I didn’t do a whole heck of a lot! It was one of those cold, winter days where all you want to do is hunker down with a big blanket, and watch the Discovery Channel. It’s true – I heart the discovery channel.
After watching yesterday’s programming, I now know how our planet was formed (by billions of meteorites sticking together over billions of years,) how water came to earth (drop by drop from water inside meteorites,) and how life formed (from amino acids within meteorites.) Knowledge is power!
I took a brief break from being a giant nerd relaxing to go pick up some killer sandwiches from B&B Deli for lunch!
This place is a no nonsense, old school Italian deli and meat counter.
They’re famous for their “Killer” sandwiches and I get Zach’s Killer every time I go. It’s got all the salted and cured meats on it – aka hypertension in a French roll. I don’t eat this stuff everyday, obviously, so I go all out when I’m here!
You order at the meat counter/deli…
And eat in the “Killer Zone.”
See, no frills! Places like this don’t need it when their food is as fresh and delicious as it is.
My sandwich did NOT disappoint!!!!
I savored each salty, spicy, savory bite. This sandwich is KILLER!!!!
This morning I got up, and decided not to be such an oaf. Grocery shopping and light housework is already done, and Ben and I are off to have brunch with my family.
Be back later this afternoon, friends!

What’s your favorite “hometown” non-chain restraurant to eat at? What makes it special?

oh my god how that sandwich looks amazing! want one, asap
There’s a little Italian place near here, it’s pizza is the best I’ve ever found not in Italy! Incredible
Yum! That sandwhich looks delsih!! I have 2 favorite hometown restaurants! One is called The Silver Caboose and it is a down home country cooking place. They have daily specials and awesome pies! Not to mention the best chicken salad snadwhich ever! That’s what I always get!! We also have an Italian restaurant called Cafe Piazza. Best pizzas, pastas, and home made desserts! Seriously, the cake slices are as big as my head!! Both of these restaurants are on the town square and are so good!
Looks like banana peppers on there!

Joe Brooks
The best sub I ever had was a buffalo chicken finger sub from the small grocery/restaurant near my college.
Here I love a little coffee shop that has awesome gourmet type sandwiches and great organic local coffee.
where is that sandwich shop?? I’ve never heard of it!
How did I not know about this place!? It is so on my sked for this week. Yum!
PS: You posted yesterday about yogurt. Have you tried Fage (no added sweeteners, just yummy creaminess)? The 0% fat is only 90 calories in 6 oz. I top it with chopped almonds and fruit. Talk about bliss! I can get it at my local HyVee finally!
That looks amazing!! There’s a sandwich place by us that we frequent that has similar sandwiches that’s quickly becoming a favorite!
That sandwich looks so delicious!!
Hmm that program sounds interesting. It appeals to my inner geek.
My favorite hometown place to eat is a Pizza/sub joint called Angelina’s. I think it’s the crack that they put in the food that makes it so good and addictive.
That sammie looks sooo good! I love the mexican food restaurant by my parent’s house — it’s REAL mexican food. Hard to find that north of Texas!
Sounds like a cool place. Look at the snow on the ground! As for my hometown there are 2. I am sooooo biased on this one, but Al Pacino Cafe (AKA cafe Isis) is a Middle Eastern place near my mom’s. Ok, I worked there for like 6 years on and off and I am still enough of family that when I go there to eat I hangout in the kitchen and answer phones. The other place is Mari Luna with some fantastic Mexican. Oh, now I am just drooling. Amazing bagels! I want to go home and visit now. On a side note, on the island where we are stationed there are no chains. Well almost none, there are a few franchise places in Angra, but there is only one of them on this island. We do have a Subway on base, but NO McDonald’s here.
Looks good! I love eating at a little chili dog shop when I’m back home – I’m not usually a huge hot dog fan, but these are delicious when paired with their homemade chili and pop served in glass bottles!
I’ve been meaning to ask you – where do you find your Barney Butter? Is there a grocery store in Des Moines that carries it? I’m in Ames and would love to pick some up for my dad for the holidays – and if that means swinging through Des Moines on the way home after finals, so be it!
I LOVE B&B and Zach’s Killer. MMM hungry now
My fave hometown restaurant is just called the Meat Market, or Hometown Meats I guess. It’s a meat market that does the BEST sandwiches, and everything is almost laughably cheap. They have specials every day, including taco salads, tenderloins, and super-hot french fries. I used to eat there in high school at least once a week, and always with a cold can of Mountain Dew (never diet–oh how times change!). Now that I’m in DSM my favorite restaurant is Centro, and thankfully I’m going there tonight! Best pizza & portabella fries–it’s what made me like mushrooms.
Hey, you and Ben have your photo in Metromix from Friday night. Looks like you’re havin’ fun!
OMG! That sandwich looks sooooooo good! There is nothing better than a great sandwich from an Italian Deli !!!
Have you tried the cheeseburgers they make at B&B? They are by far the best I’ve had in Des Moines! I love B&B!!!
That sandwich looks so good. I am jealous.
I love Christopher’s here in DM. The food is great, & so is the service.
I have to ask about your comment on how the earth was made……do you really believe that life was formed from amino acids inside meterorites? That’s my one big “rif” with Discovery Channel is that it takes God out of the picture for things like that. Life was created by God, nothing else, no one else. The earth was created by God – nothing else, no one else…..sorry to get so deep but I had to give my 2 cents worth.
Of course you do realize that’s YOUR opinion, right, Missy?
Whoa, that sandwich looks like a belly buster! But, in a good way
