For a grand total of…FIFTY SIX DOLLARS!! This entire haul was only $56. Total win on the grocery store front. :D

Now I love going grocery shopping for many reasons, but one of the biggest is that I get to come home and make something fabulous from all the new loot I pick up! For dinner, I rounded up some cottage cheese, a navel orange, Braeburn apple, blueberries & Grape-nuts

And made a Cottage Cheese Fruit Bowl!

I mixed a cup of cottage cheese with a dash of cinnamon (might be my new favorite thing, ever?!) then loaded all the other ingredients on top.

The addition of these Grape-nuts on top was super key. Their unmistakable crunch was such a fabulous texture contrast to the creamy cottage cheese – plus they’re high in whole wheat, fiber and natural antioxidants!

Did you know that Grape-nuts were originally marketed as a natural cereal that could help improve health and vitality? Basically “brain food” – ooooo. :)

This dinner was a super light, yet filling, and very refresing. YUM!

Alrighty my friends – I am off to pack my life away – I’m leavin’ on a jet plane tomorrow!!! 8)

Groceries are where I go all out. I’d rather eat good than anything else. I love playing with new groceries, too. And I totally should buy some grape nuts. They’re pretty much the pride of New England. I wonder how grape nut ice cream is–definitely ordering that out next time.

  2. Jenna 01.10.2010

Love mixing sweet things with cottage cheese. I like to sprinkle a little jello mix powder in to my cottage cheese and add cut up fruit. Delish!

I can’t wait for that recipe. I will definitely be giving it a whirl. :)

  3. Kelly 01.10.2010

Wow, what is your trick?! My fiance and I buy for 2 people and it’s usually around $100. I want it to be in the fifties!

  4. Jessica 01.10.2010

I buy for myself, husband, and 3 kiddos with a $100/week budget. It forces me to get creative!

  5. We stick to a budget with most items, but splurge on items that are worth it :)

  6. I love grocery shopping!

  7. Jenna 01.10.2010

I only shop for myself, but groceries are what I splurge on. I bought groceries last night, and my list looks pretty similar to yours. But I must admit that I’m jealous because you get some really good Larabar flavors. My grocery store isn’t so generous. I think I’ll need to go to the health food store to see if they have more options!

Being a former Iowa girl myself, I love the fact KC has Hy-Vee’s. I will admit I tried grocery shopping at Wal-Mart for a while which did save money, but I found I ended up throwing a lot of the stuff out due to poor quality. So I figure spending a little more at Hy-Vee is worth it — and it’s what I grew up with, so every time I go there, I feel a little closer to home. I find i spend most of my $$ on produce — my kids just burned through a large package of blueberries in less than 24 hours, and I’m sure they’ll finish off the small package of blackberries and breakfast tomorrow.

I picked up three Larabars just an hour or so ago at Hy-Vee: PB&J, Coconut Cream Pie and Peanut Butter Cookie. Can’t wait to try them all! Hope you have a safe trip!

Hadn’t gotten around to commenting on the other post yet to request that the pie recipe be shared. :) Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking that! Can’t wait for you to post it!

  10. GREAT haul!! I tend to challenge myself to get as MUCH as possible for as little as possible!! Have a safe trip!

  11. That’s an awesome amount of food for 50 dollars. Do you use coupons?

  12. Can’t wait to hear how you like the almond milk :)

  13. Niki 01.10.2010

I only shop for 2 and am working on sticking to a budget. It’s hard tough because I could easily spend tons of money on good food!

  14. Susan 01.10.2010

Cannot wait for you to jump on the Almond Breeze train! You will not be disappointed!

  15. mina 01.10.2010

I love Almond Breeze! I used it in green monsters instead of milk. I miss it.

  16. Jamie 01.10.2010

I work at a yogurt shop (think PinkBerry) and I LOOOVE to top my plain yogurt with grape nuts! I agree that it’s the perfect crunchy/sweet combo! Also, I made your pumpkin oatmeal twice already for my family (before I started blogging) and they love it so much that they’ve requested me to make it again tomorrow! I’ll be sure to link it back to you ;)

  17. Jenna 01.10.2010

    Where ya going?!

  18. Nicole 01.10.2010

I love grocery shopping, you got some goodies!!

  19. I grocery shop for myself, husband and our baby boy….we are definitely on a limited budget, as I am now a stay at home mom. My list is planned to the “T”….and coupons are always used. I actually enjoy grocery shopping and find it very rewarding to get good deals!

  20. Amy 01.11.2010

Groceries are the one place we don’t skimp. We buy generic and use coupons, but we don’t hold back on fresh produce usually. Sometimes a cantaloupe is $17 here and then we skip it! For 2 people we spend about $100/week (that includes cat and dog goodies too). About 35-40% of that is on produce. It gets expensive on an island. :)

  21. I love cooking oats with cottage cheese and a bit of water and cinnamon, it’s soo tasty! Oooh I just bought grape nuts yesterday too and was wondering on the best way to use them! And I could use you when I go shopping too – I always way overspend, you seem like a budget master!!

  22. Lena 01.11.2010

Oooh. You’ve got all my fav cereals ESP the grapenuts! Did you know you could soak them in your milk and they don’t get soggy? They are my absolute fav even as topping with yogurt

  23. Melanie 01.11.2010

I got inspired by your grocery shopping tips this past fall and since then have been a stickler for checking out the Hy-Vee ads and trying to plan out my weekly meals in advance! I also shop for two, and stick to about the same budget as you do. I think looking for deals and meal planning are both key in keeping the cost of groceries down, and the fact that I don’t buy much in the way of packaged snack food or pre-made meals also helps! :)

  24. I had a HUGE WIN at the grocery store to this weekend……$50.43 to be exact after tons of produce, meat (chicken, pork chops & hamburger), deli lunch meat, dairy, bread and some boxed items as well! =)

  25. Kristen 01.11.2010

I only shop for me and I am trying to be better about reading ads. It makes it hard sometimes to justify certain things if it’s only one person, you know.
Is that what you usually do to save so much. Any other tips for grocery shopping?

  26. a 01.11.2010

i spend 150-200 for me and the bf . I try to go every other week but I would say I end up going 3 times a month with random stops during the week when i run out of lettuce.

  27. Kelly 01.12.2010

Just out of curiosity is your shopping at a local Jewel/Dominick’s? or are you lucky enough to live in a smaller town with those cute small reasonably priced grocery stores?
I spent over $70- the other day and I am ONE person who rarely cooks..although I must say if I want it I buy it …on sale or not ;)

  28. Lauren 01.12.2010

Wow, that is insane! I feel like no matter what I do, I always end up spending right around $100/week for two.

  29. BroccoliHut 01.12.2010

It’s been ages since I last had Grape Nuts–I might just have to get some after reading this post!
I buy groceries just for myself, and I stick to about $40 or less each trip.

  30. I am buying groceries for 2 now as my dad moved in with me – we spent $65 on Saturday to replenish the cupboards/fridge, I’m hoping we can do about $40 this next week to mix and match what we already have.

  31. AP 01.15.2010

If you like Grape Nuts, you should try the Nutty Nuggets Hy-Vee brand. I love them on my yogurt!

  32. […] got back from the store and realized it’s been awhile since we played “show me your groceries,” so I thought I’d give it to ya’ […]
