I got a new book!
A Thousand Splendid Sunsis the follow-up novel to Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner and is about two Afghan women’s lives intertwining over a period of 40 years. Hosseini is a seriously talented story teller and I can’t wait to dig in! What’s the last book you read for fun?
While at the book store, I also read about Heidi Montag’s new body in People Magazine. I think it’s sad that a naturally beautiful girl like her would want to augment and change herself so drastically. I’ll never understand it!
At any rate – when I got home from my errands, I was understandably STARVING! The samples I had at Costco helped (fresh mozzarella, chicken ravioli & yogurt, oh my!) and I scarfed down the other half of my apple and orange, leftover from my salad this afternoon, before I went to 5:00 church with my parents.
I got a large latte when we got there, and enjoyed it while listening to a guest pastor talk about loving thy neighbor. Do you love your neighbors?
This helped keep the hunger at bay, until I got home…
And made a repeat of last night’s dinner. Well part of it, anyways…the Vegetarian Fried Rice part!
This time I used chopped up broccoli, frozen peas & corn, and 1 egg + 1 egg white for the veggies,
and ground ginger, garlic powder and sesame oil for the flavah!
Oh, and a splash of soy sauce, natch!
First I splashed some sesame oil in a skillet and let it heat up.
Then I added the frozen corn and peas to the skillet and sauteed them until hot, ~1 minute.
Next I added in cooked brown rice and broccoli, (I added the chopped broccoli to the rice pot when it had about 5 minutes left to cook so it could steam)
added a splash of soy sauce, and sprinkling of ginger and garlic powders,
then mixed!
Next, I created a well in the middle of the mixture, poured the whisked egg + egg white in, and scrambled everything up.
Done!
I love this meal!
Chewy brown rice, salty soy sauce, savory sesame oil and sweet corn kernels.
Not to mention the extra oompf and body the eggs give the whole dish. Winner winner, fried rice dinner!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some Jersey Shore to watch. What a highly entertaining, train wreck of a show! Good night!

I haven’t read The Kite Runner, but A Thousand Splendid Suns was a great book. Sad moments too. I hope you enjoy it!
Always have a genius meal planned and you’re going to enjoy the book. The Kite Runner was more moving to me but he is a great story-teller. My guilty pleasure TV show is Keeping up with the Kardashians.
I loved Kite Runner and Thousand Splendid Suns- though I liked Kite Runner better actually. I am totally into pleasure reading right now, I just read Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and now I am reading Girl Who Played With Fire, so good!
Wow. This post could not have came at a better time. I just came home with leftover brown rice and was thinking “how would I make this into a stir fry?” And I bought seitan for the first time today! I feel a meal being made here
I like Jersey Shore too but my favorite guilty pleasure has always been The Real World.
I love Jersey Shore. It is so dumb but yet I can’t turn away.
My husband watched Jersey Shore today. Not my thing. For some reason, I’m going blank on a guilty pleasure. Oh wait. I know. I visit OMG and look at all the pics of the celebs. It’s dumb, but I love it.
Last book I read for pleasure was the 3rd book in the Dark Tower Series. Meh. It’s just okay. I’m almost done with it.

I must confess……..it is THE HILLS!!! I have been watching Lauren since her Laguana Beach days and love her. Though, this season I didn’t want much because she is “gone”. =(
I agree…my hubby and I have become hooked on Jersey Shore….it’s like a car accident you just can’t look away!
I just finished The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and it was SO good!
I loved a Thousand Splendid Suns though you might need to read a lighter book when you finish, all the same I learned so much about the country’s history! Currently I’m reading a Waiter’s Rant.
The last book I read for fun was “A Single Man” by Christopher Isherwood. It’s about a man who is growing away from middle age and dealing with the loss of his lover as well as many other aspects of life. It’s a pretty quick read with a few great turns. I’d recommend it!
I am not a big fan of television other than the news, but for some reason I can’t get enough of Keeping Up with the Kardashian’s. I’ve never liked “reality tv” but something about the show keeps me hooked. I know where I’ll be tomorrow night at 10/9C! (E!)
hahah oh my gosh LOVE jersey shore!!
LOVE your dinner..looks restaurant like!
That does sound really good
I didn’t want to finish it, but I’ve got a pile of about 8 books I got for christmas which need reading before exam season starts lol!!
I’m just about the finish The Runaway Wife by Susy McPhee – it’s basically chick lit, but so well written, I’ve loved it
I’m reading “The World is Flat” about globalization. Borderline college book read, but I love it. Very interesting.
I read about Heidi the other day. I’m rather disappointed because she looked great before she had anything done!
I totally agree about Heidi! She looks terrible now and I thought she was cute before. I just finished reading The Healer by Dee Henderson, it’s part of a series called the O’Malley series. Great books. My guilty pleasure TV shows are 90210 and The Bachelor!
Haha, thre last book I read for fun over winter break was…the same as you. The Kite Runner rocked and I do have A Thousand Splendid Suns to read too. Amazing writer. Glad you enjoyed it too. The fried rice looks great. I just did lo mein with my new wok the other night and so I will probably do some variation of fried rice soon.
The friend rice looks tasty!!!
Heidi: There was a time when she was a cute all natural girl, now she is ugly, more so on the inside. I wish she wasn’t from Colorado.
Just tried the fried rice for lunch, except with frozen peas and shrimp as the add-ins. It was great!
Loved A Thousand Splendid Suns so much! Maybe even a little more than The Kite Runner! Enjoy!!!
