Potluck Panic + Giveaway Winner!

Eek, I overslept! Perhaps I should add “waking up” to my a.m. time management tip list!? ;) I was having the craziest, most vivid dreams that completely captured my attention, apparently. Do you remember your dreams?

Ok. Baking last night. It all went according to plan and the Chocolate-Peanut Butter Layered Cupcakes for today’s Super Bowl potluck at work came out beautifully!

Chocolatey cupcake batter and gooey peanut buttery goodness make up the layers of these indulgent cupcakes, which are then topped with peanut butter & milk chocolate chips!

Pop in the oven for 25 minutes and you’ve got GORGEOUS, delicious cupcakes…right?

WRONG! These had no taste! I’m talking – none! It was the strangest thing! How could something that has massive amounts of chocolate and peanut butter NOT taste out of this world? Well, I can’t tell you how, but they didn’t. And I didn’t forget any ingredients either – I triple checked. I read the reviews of the recipe I used before I made these, and there were a couple of people who said the same thing. I thought they were off their rockers because the recipe sounded SO good and I figured it couldn’t be true. Well, unfortunately, it was… :(

Then I went into panic mode. It was 9:00pm and there I was cupcake-less for my potluck today! I pondered and pondered, then it hit me – The Ultimate Cookie stash I had in my freezer – perfect!

My inner cookie monster was a little sad to see my stash depleted, but it’s all in the name of a good potluck! :D

Plus, I’m excited to have one – I’ve been doing a good job at keeping my hand out of the cookie jar freezer.

In anticipation of today’s potluck, and because I’m running late, I kept breakfast simple with a Cashew Cookie Larabar and a Navel Orange.

Usually I am 100% for NOT going to a potluck hungry – it is truly a recipe for disaster. But sometimes it’s nice to not have a plan. Indulge, enjoy, give everything a nibble. It’s ok!

So, that’s what I’ll be doing today. Tasting, enjoying and nibbling. I’m excited. :)

There was literally nothing in the house that struck my fancy for lunch today, so if I’m not full from the potluck, I think I’ll venture down to my work cafeteria for some soup and a salad. They’ve always got the best chicken noodle soup on hand.

In other news…

Fun Friday Activity: Plot your run!

I’ve come across a lot of websites that let you map and track your running routes outside – but the Livestrong Create-a-Loop tool is really great. It’s super easy to use and gives you a whole plethora of stats regarding your run. Check it out!

So, per the trail run I plotted above (which is another great feature – you don’t have to follow roads/sidewalks,) I can see the different elevations I’ll cover during my run, how long it should take me, how many calories I should burn, and more!

This tool is another reason why I’ve been playing with inclines in my workouts lately. I mean, look at the elevation chart above for the route I generally run in the warmer months. Clearly this route is anything but flat – yet I usually run on the treadmill with an incline of 0. Incorporating inclines into my treadmill runs will only set me up for success when I’m ready to hit the trails – which is hopefully soon!! :D

Lastly, I have to apologize because I completely left you in the dark about who won the Chobani Greek Yogurt CHO-Rainbow Variety Pack Giveaway (perhaps the longest giveaway title ever?!) At any rate – the winner is…

AlisonP: I had Chobani Pomegranate for breakfast today – the BEST Greek yogurt for sure!  I can’t say no to a good cheesy dip so the Warm Spinach Arti-CHO-ke Dip would have to be my recipe of choice. Good Luck on getting to Napa!!!

Congratulations Alison! Shoot me your address at IowaGirlEats@Hotmail.com, and we’ll get your variety pack right out to you – enjoy that Arti-CHO-ke Dip!

For everyone else, head to the Chobani website to get coupons for free Chobani. :)

Check back this afternoon for a roundup of some IGE Super Bowl Food Picks and have a great Friday!

Will you be watching the Super Bowl this year? Who are you rooting for?

The Saints are still in the dog house for taking Ben’s beloved Viking’s spot to the Super Bowl so, GO COLTS!

  3. Those brownies look amazing! Too bad they didn’t turn out well! I’m such a nibbler that I’d probably end up slowly demolishing them all, anyway. Good thing you have your cookie stash on hand! Have fun at the potluck!

That loop thing is amazing, by the way. It’s definitely a great training tool, I just bookmarked it. Thanks!

I honestly don’t even know who’s playing in the Super Bowl! Completely un-American of me, I know!

  4. I’m English…what IS the Super Bowl!!??
That’s weird about your cupcakes – I saw the photo and thought WOW they look good, so I was majorly surprised that you say they weren’t :(
I only remember my dreams if I’m woken during REM sleep (hehe, inner psychologist talking :p), which isn’t often! ButI love remembering them when I do :)
    Have a good evening!
(oh and I’m the same with emergency treat stashes – I’ve got a batch of frozen muffins :p)

Yep, gotta go with Ben on this one… I was hoping Brett Favre was going all the way this year. Dang you Saints!!! On a different note, I am a HUGE fan of your recipes, tortilla soup and baked broccoli are now a staple in my house now!! Thanks!!

  6. Jamie 02.05.2010

I just told my roommates that I was going to make the cupcakes this weekend because they look so good… but I got SO sad when you said they had no taste! I can’t believe it!

  7. I’m just watching for the commercials haha. Those cupcakes do LOOK delicious, thats for sure!

  8. I usually just watch the super bowl for the commercials…football kind of bores me. BUT as a Bears fan, I have to root against the Colts! Too bad about those cupcakes! I usually get really ticked when stuff doesn’t come out right because its a waste of ingredients!

  9. Holly 02.05.2010

That is a bummer about those cupcakes – they look AMAZING!!

I live in Indy – COLTS all the way, baby! :-)

I’m rooting for the Colts–lots of Iowa boys on that team!

  11. I can’t believe those cupcakes weren’t tasty! That stinks cuz they sure looked divine! Glad the cookie stash saved the day!

Thanks for the info to Livestrong map. I’ve tried Map My Run and found it difficult to use. I could just be idiotic and not know how to work it, but I couldn’t get my lines to work on that one! I’ll try the Livestrong and if I have the same problem, then I’ll know for sure…it’s just me ;)

  12. Sara 02.05.2010

What a bummer about the cupcakes! They LOOKED good. :) I will not be watching the Superbowl. My hubby is out of town and he’s the only reason that it’d watch it…so I’m not.

  13. Donna 02.05.2010

Those cookies look AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGG! I’ve been dying to try them since you posted the recipe!!! Sorry the cupcakes didn’t turn out well, they looked like winners:(

And I don’t really follow football (and only watch the superbowl to cook for a crowd;) so I always root for the underdog…go Saints:)

  14. I have really vivid dreams and sometimes I can’t figure out what was real or a dream! I spent a whole day mad at my high school boyfriend because I dreamed a senior asked him to formals and he accepted. It took hours to figure out it was a dream… oops. Those cookies look magical by the way!

  15. Those cupcakes look so beautiful! I can’t believe they aren’t as tasty as they look!

  16. Evan Thomas 02.05.2010

That’s so weird they had no flavor. Were they well salted? Chocolate and peanut butter need their salt

  17. Ashley 02.05.2010

I too, am rooting for the COLTS!!! :).

I love potlucks, they are always so much fun! Happy Friday!!

  18. Tay 02.05.2010

Mmm if we go somewhere for the superbowl, I just very well might make those cookies.

  19. Hannah 02.05.2010

Those cupcakes are so cute but the cookies are an excellent replacement, they look great!

  20. Jenna 02.05.2010

What a bummer!! The cakes look sooo good!
Have a fun time at the pot luck!

  21. Julie 02.05.2010

Gah! That is such a bummer about the cupcakes! They look and sound amazing.

I always remember my dream, and they always freak me out.

  22. So strange that something with that much chocolate would turn out bad. But at least you had a back up.

I’m rooting for the Saints just for the heck of it. I don’t like the colts too much for random reasons.

  23. I agree with everyone else – those cupcakes look to-die-for!! Sorry they didn’t turn out. I wonder what would give them some more flavour?

I am so not a football fan! My husband will be watching the Superbowl, but I’m just so not interested! LOL!
