3 Free Web Tools You Should Be Using!

Wow – I stepped outside the door for my morning Mom walk at 5:30am and swore that was 10:30am! It has gotten to be SO light out in the mornings. I just love being able to see all the pretty, blooming lilac bushes and, ohhh, my Mom’s face when we walk. It’s nice! ;)

I was actually starving for breakfast today, and am taking it on the go – Kashi Honey Almond Flax Cereal with Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze and a Banana!

I was talking with my cousin and friends this past weekend in Chicago about how much we all love unsweetened vanilla almond breeze. I don’t drink it from a glass like regular cow’s milk – although many do – but my favorite way to enjoy it is ice cold, over some cereal. IT IS SO GOOD.

I know I said I wouldn’t bring this particular cereal to work anymore because it is SO DARN CRUNCHY, but I’m hoping that the almond milk will soften it,

and the banana I plan to slice in there will help muffle the sound. Am I the only one who thinks about things like this?!

I love this cereal so much, I ate it as my dessert last night instead of the Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Brittle Ice Cream!

I’ve got leftovers for lunch!

Yeah…Ben refused to go meatless two dinners a row, so he got himself two, large pepperoni pizzas from Little Ceasars last night for $5. 8O

He got his meat, and I got Un-Egg Casserole leftovers! Win/Win.

A crunchy Pink Lady Apple + Roasted Crunchy Flaxseed Almond Butter rounds it all out.

I definitely had multi spoonfuls of this almond butter last night as I was packing my lunch. Guilty!

In other news, I wanted to share with you three, free web tools that I use on a regular basis. Hopefully, you’ll find (or currently find!) them useful!

1. Plot Your Run/Walk/Bike Route

Last night, a reader asked me how I know how far I run, since I don’t use a garmin or anything like that. I’ve posted this before, but wanted to show you again – I use the Livestrong.com Plot Your Run tool. With this tool, you can plot your run, walk, bike route, etc by following roads or highways. If you mostly run on trails, like me, you can click the “Satellite” button and unclick the “Use Streets” button to track your non-main road paths. You can also plug in your weight and how fast you run to see approximately how many calories you’ve burned!

2. Create a Recipe

Sometimes when I want to know how many calories are in a recipe I’m creating, or making, I like to use the Recipe Builder tool, also on Livestrong.com. With this tool, you add the ingredients the recipe calls for (it’ll give you specific brand names to choose from too!), the quantity and how many servings it makes. Hit submit and you’ll get a full nutritional profile for your recipe. It’s awesome!!

3. Manage Your Money

Mint.com is a FABULOUS, free website where you can securely link all your savings, 401K, checking, loan and budget information all in place to give you a complete view of what your finances look like at any given moment in time. It categorizes your purchases to show you how much you spend on gas, groceries, restaurants, etc, and even has an alert system setup to notify you of unusual purchases or when you’re close to going over budget. Life saver!

Just wanted to share a couple things that I use everyday that I thought you’d enjoy! :D

Happy Hump Day!

What website/websites do you have to visit every single day?

I am a spender. Horrible. I buy so much stuff. it’s sad really.

  2. I wish I could say I’m a saver, but. . .I’m totally a spender!

  3. brandi 05.19.2010

I agree about almond milk – LOVE it on cereal and in smoothies, but not alone in a glass.

I’m a mix of spender/saver. I’ve started saving a LOT more after we got married and got “real” jobs, but we go through big spending phases, too.

  4. Great sites! I like the 2nd one the most :)
I ALWAYS visit my favourite blogs, without doubt! Other than that, just email, horseandhound.co.uk…thta’s about the it :P
I’m a spender…and a saver! I save loads, then blow it all :p no point in ££ sitting around!

  5. Laurie 05.19.2010

You can also track your meals on Livestrong.com and count the calories. There is also an option to put in your daily exercise so you can make sure you are burning more than you are taking in if that is your goal. I love that site! And I also use mint.com. Great site!

If anyone is looking for a great blog with fun fashion and tips, check out http://asequindressatbreakfast.wordpress.com/ I LOVE this site!

  6. I love almond milk in many ways. Poor Hunni bought the sweetened kind and I can’t stand it.

  7. Amber 05.19.2010

I am a mix of spender/saver. I am on a spending binge this week…just so many things I want! However, I have automatic savings set up, so the money is gone before I even miss it, which is key.
I use the Daily Plate at Livestrong.com to track my calories. I will have to try the other tools!
Did Ben see the plane flying over Des Moines yesterday advertising Little Caesar’s, so that’s why he got pizza last night? I saw the plane but couldn’t read the banner–my husband was at a stoplight and pulled out his hunting binoculars to read it. Embarassing!!! Lol.

  8. Jenny 05.19.2010

I’m a saver! I check out my bank account every day, as well as fit sugar and newspapers!

I use and love Livestrong too! ;D
But I didn’t know that I can map trails!! So thanx!!!
And I didn’t know about the Recipe Builder!!
I always use(d) nutritiondata.com ’til now!! So thanx again! ;)
Oh and I think I’m neither or both!! ;D I like to save and then spend! :D

  11. I’m obsessed with Mint.com. I was just on that website!

Thanks for the recipe calorie count thing; I’ve been looking for one for a while but the ones I’ve tried aren’t accurate.

  12. s 05.19.2010

I always start my day with people.com, iowa girl eats :), and another iowa girl blogger- a Sequin dress at Breakfast! http://asequindressatbreakfast.wordpress.com.

  13. Rose 05.19.2010

Awesome web finds! Thanks for sharing those sites.

  14. Machelle 05.19.2010

Well, I’m to cheap to have a computor at home so I check your website Mon-Fri while at work! Ha! I also look to see who is in the Polk County Jail & also the Animal Rescue League to see the adorable pets up for adoption. I like to check out The DM Register & Juice & all the blogs. Then I look to see how my Caseys stock is doing. I’m mostly a saver, but then if I really want something I will jerk the lever! Last night I went to Slumberland & bought a big overstuffed comfy couch w/ reclining ends & a fold down center console w/cup holders! WooHoo! And I’m remodeling the bathroom as we speak. I’ve done alot of work on the house & still have more to go. It’s killing me to cough up the cash…but I keep thinking that when it is all done I can switch back into SAVE SAVE SAVE mode!

  15. oh my goodness thank you for the Mint.com tip!! i just spent the last 2 hours plugging in and managing my finances! I LOVE THIS!! and i love your lunch. i need it! im a spender who is morphing into a saver. i also DO NOT let myself care about student loan or car debt. i just think of it as a monthy payment, and if i pay everything on time every month, i will have no credit problems in the future! no worries :)

  16. Sara 05.19.2010

I use a similar recipe tool on Calorie Count website. It’s great for determining nutrition of meals. I always visit Google Reader, Facebook and Twitter, and I’m a total saver. I love to see the number in my bank account grow! :)

  17. Hannah 05.19.2010

I have recently enjoyed tips and tricks from Hungry Girl. She shares fun recipes and other good snack ideas…you can also sign up for a daily email which is really nice! :)
    Thanks for sharing your sites–awesome!!

  18. Jenna 05.19.2010

Sweet, I love the ‘Create A Recipe’ site. Thanks for sharing!

    I am a total saver!

  19. Lindsay 05.19.2010

I just made your un egg casserole recipe. It looked so yummy I had to jump right in the kitchen. I changed it up a bit, I didn’t have spinach on hand, but I added a slice of cold cut ham, a ton of broccoli and only 1 whole egg. It came out delicious. Thanks for the recipe!

  20. I love Mint, I change my budgets monthly (well most months) and update it daily to keep track. Since I’m in grad school, I don’t have a normal income and have to be really stringent about sticking to the budget I plan! I’ll still use it when I have a real job though to pay back loans and stay on track. To map out runs or bike rides, I use mapymyrun.com a lot. It’ll ask you 3 times if you want to sign up but just keep x-ing out the boxes :).

  21. Corinne 05.19.2010

I am a newly obsessed unsweetened vanilla almond milk drinker :) sooo delish in smoothies, coffee, oatmeal and w/ cereal. And its super cheap at TJs!

Totally use mapmyrun.com everyday. Sounds similar to plotyourrun! Weather.com is also on my favorites. Always need to know the weather and Futurecast is the BEST

Thanks for the sites Kristin! Happy hump day.

  22. I have to visit my favorite blogs everyday, including yours! Also a big fan of CNN and People. Contradictory much?

  23. Tracy 05.19.2010

Yay! I love the recipe bulider! Such a great way to store recipes you create, too.

  24. Angharad 05.19.2010

I use mapmyrun.com all the time to map and log all my runs – love it!
As for everyday. Hm. I check my bank most days, but honestly it’s mostly certain blogs that I read most every day!
I use mint as well – and I’m definitely more of a saver than a spender, but don’t get me wrong, I love to spend as well!

  25. kate 05.19.2010

Im a spender + a saver. Its all about balance!

  26. Katherine 05.19.2010

I love free coupons online too!

(thank goodness google is a free tool or else I’d be bankrupt!)

  27. *cough* facebook *cough* Yep. I’m addicted. I need help.

Mint.com is AWESOME!!! Now if only it could actually STOP me from spending money that I don’t have on clothes that I don’t need…

  28. Sarah 05.19.2010

Wow. I was literally just finishing eating some leftover potato casserole and thought, “I need a site where I can find out how many calories are in this.” I’m certain that there are a TON and not helping me lose my baby weight… I am so thankful you just posted that site. Go figure, I had an account that I set up there 2 years ago and had no clue about it. haha. Thanks!!!

  29. Sara 05.19.2010

I’m addicted to Facebook, Fit Sugar and Iowa Girl Eats of course ;)
I also get my geek on at Topless Robot, Heartless Doll, Geeks of Doom and The Great White Snark daily.

I LOOOOVVVEEEEE almond milk! But since its higher on the glycemic index I have to watch my intake so I just use a small amount over the occasional bowl of cereal (mmm Fiber One) and in smoothies. My mom bought some after hearing me rave about it and tried drinking it straight and tried to give up on it. I told her to try it with her cereal and she is now a convert.

I am so going to use the recipe builder! Several people including my doctor have recommended a diet based around the glycemic index (I have some medical issues that make it nearly impossible to lose weight by healthy eating and exercise alone-I don’t process sugars and carbs properly :( ) and I bought Living the GI Diet by Rick Gallop. The book is great I read it all in one sitting last night, and it included 140 recipes to try but NO nutritional values :( So I’m going to input them there. Thanks as always for the great info!

  30. Elliott 05.19.2010

I wanted to a share a cool/free website I can recently found. All of you runners out there with an iPhone should download the RunKeeper app! There is a free version (the one that I have) that gives you so much information. It plots your run or other activity using GPS, times it, and gives an estimate calorie burn. After registering on their website, http://www.runkeeper.com, you can see your splits, inclines, and all sorts of other useful information. It will definitely not disappoint! Hope someone will enjoy this as much as I do.

  31. anne 05.19.2010

I love Kashi Go Lean Crunch but my jaw does not like the super crunch… so I pour my milk and let it sit for a while. Softens it just a bit but still good texture (not soggy).

    Definitely a saver!

  32. ha love Go Lean Crunch and also eat it at work…I put it in yogurt and let it sit for a few minutes to soften and reduce the crunch noise ;)

  33. Liz 05.19.2010

I check IGE & some other blogs daily, as well as facebook, my bank acct, & every credit card acct… I use myfitnesspal.com to track calories/recipe nutrition, very similar to the site you use!

I’m dying to try almond milk in my protein smoothies…

  34. Nicole, RD 05.19.2010

I can’t wait to visit that recipe building site!

I have to visit my favorite blogs daily :)

  35. Ann 05.19.2010

Thank you for the Livestrong.com Plot Your Run tool! I have been using mapmyrun.com for my run/walk/bike miles, but all of the ads and requests to join annoy me. I already use Livestrong.com Daily Plate to track my calories and I had no idea about Plot Your Run!

My daily websites are Netvibes.com (where I track the many blogs I read), my bank, and Facebook (argh!).

I’m so much of a saver, it’s embarrassing. :) I love seeing the amount saved from coupons at the bottom of my grocery store receipts. Of course, the occasional spending spree is always ok, too!

  36. Natalie 05.22.2010

I’ve been using the standard mydailyplate.com to check nutritionals because I wasn’t sure if the whole Livestrong website was free? I got so confused with what was gold or whatnot. Is the recipe index you use apart of the free membership!? If so I must sign up ASAP!

  37. […] my trail, I biked the 5 miles roundtrip to the library (calculated using my fave tracking tool) to pick that baby up. One problem, it’s due back to the library in three weeks, which I know […]
