Does anyone know when hedgeapples come into season?
I have been finding these disgusting little spiders near my outside doors recently, and it needs to stop pronto!!! Spiders are pretty much my number one fear and I literally want to move to a new house every time I see one.
Last summer/fall I placed hedgeapples near all my entrances and didn’t find a single bug in my house after, so I’m anxious to get my hands on some again!
At any rate, it’s been cloudy and grey all day, but thankfully no raaaaain! Not wanting to press my luck, I went for a sweaty 3.5 mile run around 3:30. I tried to go a little earlier, but House Hunters sucked me in. Damned HH ALWAYS wins! It was an especially cool episode set in Portland, OR, featuring a couple with a budget of $1 mil. Ie, it was extremely tough to tear myself away.
Dinner tonight was quick and satisfying. A hot turkey & cheese sammie and some fresh watermelon!
Look at the gooiness! I cut up a pepper jack cheese stick, then melted it with some deli turkey and dijon mustard, all between two slices of EarthGrains 100% Whole Wheat bread.
Woo! I got a little to much dijon in there. Sinuses = cleared!
The watermelon cooled things down. SO juicy and sweet. This is what H2Omelon should taste like!!
5 minutes from ingredients to dinner. Gotta love that.
Off to fold some laundry and prepare myself for the week. This weekend went way too fast, don’t you think?!
‘night!

On a scale of 1-10, how bug-averse are you?
If I’m camping or something, it’s totally fine/expected that there’s going to be bugs around. When I find them in my house though, I feel like they’re invading my personal space!! Is that crazy?

I grew up going to the family cottage accesible by water only , my father later purchased a nearby resort , so I’m pretty okay with bugs in general.
I ‘m the kind of girl that will rip her worms in half and bait her own hook and such but I draw the line at bugs in my house.
Its not that im scared of the bugs. Its the fact that germy things are in my house lol
Turkey and cheese with dijon mustard?!!

HOLY YUM!
Thanks for the AMAZING idea, Kristin. Seriosuly.
That was brilliant!
Brazilian XOXO´s,
Gabriela
That watermelon looks SOOOOO good! I am definitely buying one tomorrow.
Bugs….ewww! I hate bugs and I also feel like moving when I start seeing them. They are the ONLY reason I love winter, since they leave temporarily, haha! I’m currently fighting the earwigs/baby ants. Only seen 3 earwigs this spring and luckily my dog finds them before me and kills them with her claws. I’m curious about those hedgeapples and I’m about to go visit that post!
Earwigs….so those are what they are called??? Thank you! They are THE most disgusting bugs I have ever seen. I opened my mailbox yesterday to find them everywhere. They give me the willies!!! I’m totally creeped out by them.
Yeah! I first heard of them when my parents built their deck years ago…they like the wood. I also have heard that if you’ve recently laid mulch, they may be around more. I just don’t want them IN my house! My uncle is coming to spray around the foundation of my house (I recommend you do that if you can), and that helps alot!
I don’t mind bugs too much. Don’t wanna live with ‘em, but can deal with ‘em. However, my best friend completely FREAKS when they come near…so I understand your fear!
That juicy watermelon is calling my name! I almost bought when today and decided against it. Now I’m kicking myself!
Oh WOW that sandwich looks so good!!!
I HATE SPIDERS!! And anything with so many legs.. I don’t hurt them if I’m outside and invading THEIR environment, but if they come inside… it’s over.
I am totally with you on the spiders – I am so scared of them I usually won’t kill them (unless they are super tiny). I have actually called my hubby from my cell phone when he was upstairs to come downstairs to kill one (I didn’t want to lose sight of the spider). I have never heard about the hedgeapples – I am going to try that! Thanks.
I’m fine with bugs outdoors. Totally fine. But in my house, nooooooo! I actually don’t mind spiders as much as other bugs – at least I know the spiders are eating the other bugs!
I think hedgeballs start coming out in full swing in July! That’s a good idea–I am moving into a new apartment in July and I think I will pick some up for the deck.
Thanks for the reminder!
Ugh, those nasty little bugs are such a pain. I find that I get these annoying little worms in my garden but I don’t want to spray anything chemically onto my veggies. SO if there is a natural repellant out there, I’m all for it!
Hope you have a great night Kirstin!
Bleh, I’m with you on the bugs! I am terrified of spiders/any kind of arachnid. The only bugs/insects/whatever I’m okay with are butterflies, caterpillars, rolly pollies, praying mantis (sp? lol), and lady bugs. And worms, actually.
I agree that bugs belong outside! I kill them when they are in my space and it seems to be spider season here too.
It can’t hurt and it smells good.
I have heard that Bounce fabric sheets are a good way to keep them out… I put them under my bed!
I am orginally from Portland and think I have seen that episode, I love that city~!
Hedgeapples/hedgeballs are not effective until they start to ripen, usually in September. Southern Iowa is full of hedge trees, and they are usually not hard to find. Make a trip to southern Iowa, visit some farmers markets and pick up a truck load of hedgeballs, a great weekend fall trip.
Looks like you had a fun weekend! I don’t mind the bugs….just don’t want them near my bedroom or my kids’ rooms. Ick!
I finished the marathon!!! WOW! What an amazing experience. If you ever feel the desire try and run Grandma’s marathon in Duluth, MN. So totally worth it! I’m sore but with a huge smile on my face.
I am not even sure what hedgeapples are but great tip!
Not a huge fan of bugs BUT I grew up in northwestern Ontario (aka middle bush and lake country) so I definitely can tolerate them more than most.
Amazing looking dinner! Melted cheese mmmmmmm and the watermelon looks heavenly!
House Hunters is so fun! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a 1 million dollar budget?! Well, I’m sure they found something nice in Ptown. Melted cheese sandwiches are always delish, especially for how easy they are to make!
I did research for 3 years in an entomology lab, so bugs don’t really freak me out
Although sometimes I would come home from the lab and find a baby caterpillar on myself then have the heeby jeebies the rest of the day (we used to raise them ourselves from teeny tiny little things and they would escape all the time!!).
I actually dont mind bugs that much. If one is on me, I’ll just flick it off or pick it up and set it aside. I dont go crazy screaming about it. I used to though, I think I used to be really girly, then kind of tomboy and finally I’m a mix of both now
5 ingredient dinner, reminds me of the show on food network and yes, those are the best dinners or any meals really.
I am totally creeped out by any bugs. As a kid, I was cool with it, but I absolutely can’t stand the sight of them now, especially in my house. It just makes me feel like my place is dirty and unkempt. I will yell for my husband to come and kill it. Thank you so much for bringing up hedgeapples, but I really wish they were in season NOW. I have those earwigs that Ashley replied about. I googled “earwig” and shuddered at the sight!!! If you come across another home remedy, please post. Thanks!!!
I hate hate HATE bugs!!! EEEEEEEEEK.
Have a little bit of an ant colony going on in my apartment recently, somehow, and it’s driving me crazy! Those little suckers have got to go! My cat loves to get them, though, haha
