A Fun Alternative to Running

33

I’ve told you before that while I love to walk and lift weights with other people, running is generally a solo sport for me.

I was feeling a little dangerous today, though, and randomly asked Ben if he wanted to join me on my afternoon jog! Unfortunately, he did not ( :( ) but fortunately, he WAS up for a game of tennis instead! ( :D )

IMG_9241

Here’s the thing – I could lie and tell you that Ben and I are really good at tennis. That we’ve taken extensive lessons, played competitively in high school, and dominate the courts!

IMG_9242

The truth is…we stink. We stink bad! Although, Ben claims he hits the balls all over creation so he can help me get a good workout. Riiiight. ;) Hehe.

IMG_9245

Anyways, it’s the company more than the score that we’re concerned about, and we had a great time. After 30 minutes, Ben became permanently blinded by the sweat dripping in his eyes, and I thought my legs were going to give out from sprinting so much, so home we went…

to devour Shrimp Korma!

DSC_0041

I used my favorite Tasty Bite simmer sauce, Good Korma.

DSC_0023

It’s a flavor mixture of coconut, cashews and Indian spices. IT. IS. AMAZING!

DSC_0025

In a salt-packed world, it still blows my mind to see the fabulous stats on this pre-packaged sauce. Love seeing that 0% DV in the sodium category. :D

DSC_0027

I started our dinner by sautéing some summer squash and broccoli in ~2 teaspoons of peanut oil on high heat.

DSC_0033

Just long enough to get a little bit of color on ‘em.

DSC_0034

Then I added shrimp and the sauce + 1/2 cup water, and simmered for 10 minutes. I ended up having way too much liquid, since the veggies and shrimp gave off so much, so I let it boil on high for several minutes after it was done simmering, adding some additional garam masala and garlic powder to season it back up!

DSC_0036

Served over brown rice and garnished with green onions and peanuts!

DSC_0038

I LOVE TASTY BITE!!!!!!!!

DSC_0040

Exotic, slightly spicy and so fresh. Perfect for a dinner just off the courts. ;)

DSC_0043

Oh, HAAAAA. If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, then you know I am a candy addict. I would eat it all day, every day if I could. Lately I’ve been really trying to cut back (with success!) and haven’t had any in…weeks?! Well Ben knows I miss it sometimes so he got me a pack of Nerds so I could have a “quick hit” of candy when I need it. Ohhh gosh, I am just dying laughing. He is so great!

DSC_0050

Tonight I’m watching The Bachelorette – they’re heading to Iceland! I would LOVE to go to Iceland – I’ve heard such incredible things about it!!

ps have you heard about the new Bachelor/Bachelorette show where they’re bringing back infamous past contestants to compete for love/money?? Sounds so lame…but I’ll probably watch… Yikes!

Have a great night!

Do you prefer to workout alone, or with a buddy? Does it depend on the activity?

What are you “addicted” to?

I’m also addicted to dried apricots. As in, cannot keep them in the house because I will eat an entire bag in 2 days! 8O

I am the same with running. I love to workout with others but running is definitely my “me time.” I don’t like to talk when I run, just listen to music and my own thoughts. I guess every once in awhile it’s not so bad, but I don’t think I’ll be signing up for any road runner clubs in the near future.

Awww, that Ben, he is such a sweetie! :)

I like to work out on my own if I’m going on a run…it’s just a little bit of me time! Otherwise I have no problem working out with other people!

I’m addicted to CANDY!!! I can’t get enough. At work I always have a variety stashed…gummy bears, Twizzlers, Skittles, Starburst, etc. that I can grab when I have a break! Now that it is summer, I try not to keep as much in the house!

This is going to sound weird. I would rather be in a group fitness class but I am really working out by myself. I get myself into a zone so I feel like I am by myself. I want the direction but in my zone I find I work my hardest and best.
My weakness is honey roasted peanuts. UGH!! I would eat the whole package in a day if they are around. I let myself have a small treat at Christmas. Santa usually brings me one in my stocking!

I love Korma! I’m going to have to be on the lookout for that sauce!

Mmmm… Nerds! My boyfriend and I have been talking about playing tennis because it’s such a good workout.

I am addicted to that salt and lime popcorn ever since I finally broke down the other day and bought some! Oh, and lately I’m addicted to Starbucks shaken iced tea lemonade. Mmmm… now I want one! Although after the alfredo I made myself for dinner tonight I think I need to eat nothing but fruit and veggies for the next 24 hours! LOL

I’ve been to Iceland and love the Bachelorette so am pumped about tonight’s episode. I loved the Blue Lagoon spa and the crazy geological features (glaciers, rocky fault line, geysers, etc). Plus, Reykjavik, the capital has an incredible nightlife because all of the young Icelanders venture into the capital on weekends. It is an amazing place!

i have a newfound love of tennis! my boyfriend and i were playing it all the time before he had to leave for the summer. it’s definitely my new favorite workout.

Your dishes are always so colorful and delicious looking! LOL @ the candy fix – that’s sweet of Ben to pick you up treats every so often!

Honestly, I’d love to have someone to work out with…but I’d need someone who was only slightly better than me to push me juuuuust enough :) And I haven’t found such a person yet (either they don’t like to run or they’re WAAAY better than me), so usually I go solo.

Aaaand I’m addicted to leftovers. I’m such a grazer, especially with handfuls of Kashi Crunch…I love finding the big chunks :D

I saw those sauces randomly the other day and thought about picking one up. But I didn’t. Now I need to go back and get one. I love sauces but hate the sodium content.

I am addicted to cheese Goldfish crackers. I can’t buy them, because if I do, I eat the whole bag in one or two sittings. It’s insane.

I think it def depends on the activity. When I use machines I usually just like to put on headphones and get in the zone. However, I prefer to go with friends to classes like zumba, salsa, or yoga. I was the tallest and most NON flexible girl in the yoga room one time, so it really helped to have a friend there just to laugh with me.

I have lots of food addicitions! I let myself give in once a month though and get the nestle tollhouse break and bake chocolate chip cookies. My boyfriend eats most of them but I adore the way my home smells when they are baking. And they dont taste too bad either ;-)

My girlfriend is a much better tennis play than me. But she hates playing tennis with me because I really suck, and she can’t hit lobs. I always hit lobs (because I suck), and she returns it to the net. It’s sooo funny. I want to get better, but she refuses to play me at this point. :(

I love golf, but it is a sport that I love to play with people, but play for myself! My daughter is 11 AND is such a better golfer than I will EVER be.

I love to walk and it depends on my mood whether or not I have company, more often than not I end up with company and they just yammer away and I just nod and smile in all the right places, not hearing a word they say! ;-)

I am addicted to hot saki and sushi and I have wayyyyyyy to much saki when I eat sushi and sashimi!

Dinner looks great, of course! I spent $40 something on groceries today and thought of you as my total was given. Similar shopping items too, but not exact. You’re proving to be a good example, I hope you know that.

As for your questions, I prefer to workout alone, but I feel more motivated when I am with a buddy. And I am obsessed with reading, writing and Harry Potter. I find that they are all acceptable obsessions, but I would say that.

    Have a wonderful evening. Cheers!

I have 3 of those Tasybite sauces in my cabinet waiting to be used. I’m so glad that you said they’re amazing!! I’m so excited to try now. And I agree, I was blown away by the low sodium content. I’m always in search of low-sodium options, so this makes me haaaaaaaaaappy!! :D

The last time I played tennis was in high school during gym. It was Halloween Day so we didn’t have to change into our gym clothes. My competitor was a genie, and I was a human pom-pom. That made for a very interesting match.

I enjoy running with people, golfing, and walking but otherwise I’d prefer to “work out” in an exercise facility alone. The dinner looks amazing! I’m totally addicted to diet coke and peanut butter–real healthy over here!

I consider working out ‘me’ time and really can’t tolerate working out with anybody. I really enjoy seeing some of the same people in the classes I frequent, but prefer their company to that of people I really know. That said, I LOVE tennis (played competitively in high school, and recreationally in college) and much prefer doubles with my husband to singles playing against him. Though we have yet to find a league or another team to play double regularly, so we are content with singles for the time being.
Another reason Trader Joe’s is awesome…they have dark chocolate covered blueberries. O.M.G. These are my current obsession. A-MAZE-ING! (Thought of you as I shopped TJ today.)

And I’m totally addicted to almond butter and lots of blogs!

I tried to find this sauce at the grocery store yesterday- but no luck! I’ll have to try Whole Foods I guess?

I am defiently addicted to oatmeal and oatbars. Hmmm I need to make some oatbars soon hehe. Tennis. That is something I should give a try this summer. I think that is something the hubbby is interested in too. He might have suggested it years ago, back in my heavier inactive years.

i prefer to run alone, but while i was in africa it was imperative to run with a friend. it got me used to the idea, and i actually thought of each run as a little race where i would secretly compete with my friend. it got me motivated, but i havent had a running buddy in so long!! i am addicted to candy and goldfish – two things i will never keep in bulk in my house

I am addicted to animal crackers. I bought a GIANT bag from Walgreens on Friday…they were completely finished off by Monday morning. Now I remembered why I rarely buy them :) And I can totally relate to your candy addiction…I give in to that one lots though because you only live once!

I hadn’t heard about that new bachelor/bachelorette reality show…but your comment is so true. Totally ridiculous, but I bet I get sucked in!

My husband pretty much refuses to run with me. Very rarely I can get him to go for a walk. He will play tennis with me though! Neither of us are very good either but I always have so much fun – he tells me the same thing about helping me get a good workout in :) BTW – I went to the Valley Junction farmers market for the first time last week and it was great. Definately will go back. I haven’t been to the Des Moines one yet, but would like to get there this summer – that nut butter stand has my name written all over it.
