New Product Review & How-To!

It’s a beautiful morning here in central Iowa, so I decided to head out into the sunsetRISE for a 4.25 mile run after my Mom walk! Plus, there’s no time like the present to break in a new pedicure. ;)

The morning air was humid, but cool, and the run was pretty terrific except for a brief encounter with a certain black dog. You know the one. I even ran on the other side of the street from its house, but it still chased after me for a couple seconds before giving up. Bad dog!

Since my run, I literally haven’t been able to cool my body temp down, so I decided another, refreshing Oatgurt needed to be on the breakfast menu – a Peach Almond Oatgurt!

In the mix:

  • 1/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 banana
  • cinnamon, almond extract
  • Peach Chobani Greek Yogurt
  • Peach
  • Sliced almonds

So creamy! And especially luscious with a fresh, juicy peach. What am I going to do when all the fabulous summer produce goes away?! I can’t even think about it!

I know it’s only my second bowl of oatgurt, but I’m obsessed. The thick Greek yogurt is like icing on the oatmeal.

I’m especially loving this combo because I like to eat oatmeal for breakfast year round, but sometimes it’s just too hot. The cold yog cools everything down into a mellow, refreshing breakfast that can be enjoyed on even the hottest of summer mornings. Yes!

I packed my matching chop once, eat twice Kitchen Sink Salad and a Peanut Butter Cookie Larabar for lunch today.

In the mix:

  • Mixed greens
  • Baby spinach
  • Cucumber
  • Tomato
  • Tofu
  • Blueberries
  • Peanuts

Like I said on Tuesday, this salad contains a seriously eccentric combo of flavors and textures – but it was awesome! I drizzled it with Annie’s Lite Raspberry Vinaigrette,

and it was good. :)

Second day in a row for a Larabar…

I HEART Peanut Butter Cookie – it’s my favorite LB flavor. It’s actually better than a peanut butter cookie (I swear to you) and has only three ingredients. Wheee!

In other news, I set up my Keurig last night and brewed my first cup this morning! Here she is, in all her glory.

A Keurig machine brews single cups of coffee using these coffee “pods”. You can buy packs of pods in different flavors and brew strengths, or you can even buy a reusable pod that lets you add in your own coffee grinds.

DSC_0006 DSC_0007

You fill the side chamber with water (and only refill it when it’s empty – about every 3 or 4 cups,) place a pod on top and pull down.

Then all you have to do is press “on”,

wait for the blue lights to blink, indicating the water is hot, (which took, like, ONE minute!)

and brew, baby, brew!

It’s so nice to have the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the house again! I used to brew pots for just myself in the mornings, as Ben doesn’t drink coffee, but it got to be such a hassle to clean, change out the filters, etc. This is no fuss, no muss. It’s love!

In other, other news, it’s Three Question Thursday! My aging mind seems to have forgotten it the past several weeks. ;)

Answer on!

1. What’s your favorite kitchen gadget?

2. Would you rather be stuck on a deserted island with Carrot Top or Joan Rivers?

3. What made you smile yesterday?

My answers:

1. This Keurig is pretty high up there, but I also ADORE my mini food processor. Couldn’t live without it!

2. UGH this seriously makes me squirm because I would rather be swimming away from the desert island than be stuck on it with either of them!! If I had to chose, though, I’d choose Carrot Top!

3. Mother/Daughter pedis & dinner!

Hi there! I have a keurig! I love it! Especially since I only drink 1 cup, it makes it so much easier than to try to figure out how to brew a pot of coffee for only a little amount. Also- the little pods seem to get expensive, so I would recommend buying them at a costco, bjs, or sam’s club. They are like 30 dollars for 80 cups there. I just ran out and I bought it at Christmas time!

What made me smile yesterday: My boys made and gave me a couple of cute bracelets they made at summer school last night. They made such a huge deal about the ‘surprise’ – making me close my eyes, etc.

  19. Becky 07.08.2010

I’d definitely be lost without my Keurig! I use it everyday to it tops my list of kitchen gadgets. Yesterday, I went to the best yoga class. It put a smile on my face for quite awhile.

    Happy Thursday!

  20. Mikael 07.08.2010

I need to learn to not read your blog when I’m hungry… Pardon me while I whipe the saliva from my desk :P Haha! That kitchen sink salad looks amazing! Blueberries are my fave. But how can the peanut butter cookie LB be better than the peanut butter cookie flavor if its the same one? I’m assuming you mean the PB&J one you ate yesterday right? If so, that’s definitely next on my list of things to try.

1- My electronic whisk/mixer/stirrer thingie… get’s the hot cocoa and the eggs just right
    2- Joan Rivers
3- Doing Zumba! And getting messages from a cute guy who may come visit me this weekend since he lives out of state =)

  22. Jen 07.08.2010

I love Keurigs!!!! I want to get one one of these days!

    1. What’s your favorite kitchen gadget?
This is so tough. Right now I love my stick blender to make smoothies, but I also love my Pampered Chef no edge can opener and my Pampered Chef garlic press.
    2. Would you rather be stuck on a deserted island with Carrot Top or Joan Rivers?
Joan Rivers, hands down. I can’t even stand to look at Carrot Top when he is on TV or something. He makes my freakin skin crawl!!!!
    3. What made you smile yesterday?
Ugh, yesterday was not a good day, but my 2 year old niece called me and when I asked what she was doing she said “upstairs, being bad!” That kid never fails to make me smile no matter what.

  23. Stephanie 07.08.2010

Love your blog!! I made my grocery list yesterday just from reading your posts. I decided to try the Larabars and the Chobani while at Hy Vee, and then discovered at the checkout that everything in Hy Vee’s health dept. is 10% on Wednesdays :) Even better!!

  24. Dawn 07.08.2010

OMG.. I would hate to be stuck with either, but at least Carrot Top probably isn’t as whiney and annoying as J.Rivers and he is probably more resourceful! I doubt she can make a fire!

My favorite kitchen gadget these days is my britta water filter.

So far no smiles! It’s early yet! But I am always grateful for the day that has been offered and I know it will improve!

  25. We had a Keurig all over the place at my seminary and I loved them. Hunni promised we could get one this year since I have to drink a cup a day and the regular pot is driving me nuts.

    1. What’s your favorite kitchen gadget? Right now it is my George Foreman grill with removable places.

    2. Would you rather be stuck on a deserted island with Carrot Top or Joan Rivers? I’ll pick Joan just because she seems like she would pass out after a bit.

    3. What made you smile yesterday? I started watching a funny series on Netflix that made me giggle.

  26. Dawn 07.08.2010

My favorite kitchen gadget is just about any of my pampered chef stuff…I get a lot of use out of the chopper.
I like you would rather swim away if either of those two were on a desert island, however, if a choice had to be made…I’d choose Carrot Top.
I smiled yesterday during a date night with my husband! Gotta love those!

  27. Susan C. 07.08.2010

    1. A really sharp knife and good quality cutting board
    2. Ugh, had the same respose as you, I guess Carrot Top, at least he has muscule and could gather firewood and water.

  28. Anna 07.08.2010

Do you fuel up by eating anything prior to your early morning runs?

  29. Renee 07.08.2010

    1. probably my blender- i love making smoothies in the morning :)
    2. joan rivers – carrot top drives me loco and im not sure why.
    3. a good conversation with my friend online, gotta love catching up even when you live far away.

i actually had peach oatgurt this morning!! you inspired me with your recipe yesterday that i did it with my peach yogurt and peaches i have in the house- it made me smile to see you happened to do it too!! :)

  30. Run Sarah 07.08.2010

That Keurig looks awesome – I have a cheapo 1 cup coffee maker that works well for and was only $10, but if it breaks down I make have to invest in a Keurig. I didn’t know you could add your own grinds as well, that makes it a bit less expensive!

  31. Cynthia 07.08.2010

    1. My favorite kitchen gadget is my mini food processor ( i never have to dice/mince onion or garlic again….love!)
    2. Definitely Joan Rivers (I know she would have all of her cool accessories and sunglasses with her. LOL! What? You still have to look fab in case you’re rescued….Right?) Carrot Top creeps me out.
    3. UGH! Yesterday was not a good day, I cried most of it:(

  32. Elyse 07.08.2010

I must get one of those!! I didn’t realize you could also use your own coffee. I thought you could only buy the different “pod” brands. Very cool :-)
    1. This is a toss up between my rice steamer (could NOT live without it), my best kitchen knife, or my wine opener. What?? That is a kitchen appliance! ;-) hehe
    2. Yikes.. I would send them both off in a boat and have Johnny Depp come out of the trap door under the island. :-D
    3. My cat Bailey who I had to try to put in her crate since she is staying at my mom’s place this weekend. Getting her in there is always hilarious.

  33. Dream Mom 07.08.2010

Favorite kitchen gadget is tough but is probably my Zojirushi Mini Bread Machine because I make all my bread, pizza dough, hamburger buns, you name it. I received it as a gift in January of 2009 and have made all of my bread ever since. I like knowing what ingredients are in my bread and it’s wonderful because I can add my own flaxseed or nuts or whatever else to it. I can also make jam in there.

If I were stranded, I’ll pick Joan Rivers. She’d be in a pitch to get us out of there whereas I don’t think Carrot Top would care.

The little ground squirrel outside made me smile. He lives under the tree outside my bedroom window. He comes up to the window and looks in to see if the cat is around and he was coming up to the patio door screen just as I was closing the door to turn on the air and he ran away. He’s really cute. They have a love/hate relationship. They pretend to hate each other but yet they sit and watch for the other one.

  34. Daisy 07.08.2010

I brew a coffee pod everyday at work. they have those machines (larger, from a different company) with green mountain coffee in all our kitchens. so happy for you and your rekindled love affair with at home brewed coffee!

  35. Kelli 07.08.2010

I love your blog and I totally love my Keurig! I have the Keurig mini(think small apartment kitchen size). It works just like the larger brewers but only hold enough water for one cup. It was a Christmas gift from my mom two years ago and I’ve used it every day since then. My fiancee doesn’t drink coffe either so its a great investment.

The pods can be kind of expensive, but if you watch for them on sale at places like Younkers, Bed Bath & Beyond, or Target they aren’t too bad. Hyvee has them too but they are more pricey there sjnce they carry them in smaller boxes.

  36. Love, love, love PB cookie Larabars!! I swear whenever I go to the States I eat them everyday!! Do you cook the tofu before you put it in the salad as it doesn’t look like you have, so I was just wondering?

  37. stacy 07.08.2010

    1. my food processor
    2. Joan for sure
    3. the fresh organic produce box that showed up on my doorstep

    2. Joan Rivers — I’m terrified of Carrot Top — truly, I am!
    3. My anniversary :)

  39. Anna 07.08.2010

    1. I have an electric wine bottle opener – lol! Birthday gift from the beau. I’m with you on the food processor though. It’s saved my fingers from getting all garlic and onion stinky so many times!

    1. Probably my KitchenAid mixer. Love it!
    2. I guess Joan Rivers. Carrot Top is kind of creepy.
    3. My 4 year old son made me smile yesterday. He always seems to get me to laugh no matter how bad the day.

I have been wanting a Keurig but was worried about the price of the pods. Didn’t know you could buy one to use your own coffee with.

    • Mom 07.08.2010

I found the pods are least expensive at Bed, Bath, Beyond with the 20% off coupons they always have. Also, BBB has the insert that you can put your own coffee in for $14.99 minus the 20% coupon!

  42. Maura @ theMOH 07.08.2010

    1. My small food processor. It just broke though :(
    2. Umm….neither?? I’d rather be stuck with “Wilson” from Castaway..
    3. Feeling appreciated at work made me smile yesterday!

  43. MelissaOklahoma 07.08.2010

Thanks to you, I’ve been inspired to eat so much oatmeal in the mornings! Adding fruit and or yogurt really jazzes it up. Plus I made a tuna salad with Greek yogurt after I saw you make your chicken salad the same way. I had a can of tuna laying around and don’t like the idea of adding tons of mayo … so I tried the Greek yogurt, and Yum!

    Thanks for all the ideas!

  44. Sara 07.08.2010

I had oatgurt this morning too!! It was SO good, very refreshing, just like you said :)

    1. My fav. gadget is my stand up mixer…baking is a breeze now! If only I didn’t have to stow it away every time I used it..
    2. Ew to both, but probably Joan Rivers.

  45. I have been wanting a Keurig!! But for now, I just stick to my French Press :) Maybe one day…

    1. My French Press in conjunction with my Electric Kettle and my bean grinder. These all go hand and hand.. :o)

I am a true coffee snob (LOL) and would never consider owning a Keurig. A press is the only way for me and my brew. :o) Sorry to all those Keurig fans… But as a former coffeehouse barista.. I just don’t understand or agree with all the HYPE.

    2. Carrot Top.. Joan Rivers makes me ill.. not that Carrot Top is a prize but he is good with coming up with contraptions – maybe he would put together something that would get us off the island!

    3. My 1 year old son. :o)

    Have a great day ALL!

  49. Brynne 07.08.2010

    1. My new mini food processor! Although I have yet to use it …
