La-di-da – it was another beautiful morning at the Farmer’s Market!
I thought I’d give you some different shots than the ones I normally give you.
Such as the downtown Des Moines skyline,
A Mother and son enjoying the morning,
and TONS of fresh produce!
Every week, more and more colors are popping up at the stands as more and more veggies are coming into season.
Eye candy!
I made sure to pick up some staples for the week, including some fresh-from-the-field Iowa sweet corn.
From the farm to the Farmer’s Market!
Of course, my Mom and I made certain to work up a big enough appetite to indulge in a delectably cheesey, gooey, creamy Pupusa!
From the griddle,
To my mouth.
I covet the extra crunchy parts of the thick, handmade corn tortilla, that mix with the cheese, which gets a little extra dark and crunchy on the grill. Bliss!
This was perhaps the cheesiest Pupusa I’ve had this year.
Seriously!
Ok, now I’ve GOT to tell you about this. As if I needed anymore ice cream running through my veins, my Mom and I stumbled upon this sweet little sign on one of the market tables – no wait, we actually heard someone read it, and we were like, "whaaaaa? SWEET CORN ICE CREAM?!"
As Iowans, we have been eating sweet corn every summer, for our entire lives – but this was a new one!! We were SO curious, but also semi weirded out?
After this woman told us she had handmade it that morning with the sweet corn she was selling, we decided to give it a shot.
Here we go!
AMAZING! Like seriously, amazing! Number one, this woman makes a darn good vanilla ice cream. Number two, she had put the fresh corn kernels in a food processor, then added it to the ice cream base, so the natural sweetness of the corn shone right through.
There was even bits of the kernel that you chewed on, making it so sweet and homemade. Awww, we loved it!!! Locals, check out the Westrum Produce stand next week to get a taste of your own. What a unique product!
Here’s the rest of my loot:
Fresh basil: $1.
Tomatoes: $2.75.
Sweet candy onion: $1.
4 stalks sweet corn: $2. Score!
As I was dropping my Mom off at home, she gave me some hummus she had got at Costco.
Not exactly sure why it’s called "hommus", as it has the same ingredients as "hummus", but it is killer.
Soooo smooth, like whipped icing, and perfectly garlicky.
Paired with baby carrots for a nice little afternoon snack.
Yum!
I’m off to run some errands with Ben, then meet some girlfriends for iced coffee and a chat!
Have a super Saturday afternoon!

Would you eat sweet corn ice cream?

i went to grad school in the asparagus capital of the country and they had asparagus ice cream!!
NO! I hate sweetcorn! Blerhc :s
Those are some crazy looking green peppers…!!
Can’t beat basil for $1!! I may be slightly obsessed with basil this season.. it energizes so many dishes!
I would love to try the sweet corn ice cream! Sounds great. My parents just got an ice cream maker – maybe I’ll have to try my own version!
YUM! Everything looks really good as usual:)
I’m up for trying anything once so that sounds amazing.
I love your deals! I wish I could get deals like that around here.
Wow, never in my life would I thought you could get sweetcorn ice-cream!
I would give it a try! Hey you never know right?! It actually looks really good! And that basil is gorgeous! For only a dollar, what a deal!
That sweet corn icing sounds really good!! I’m imagining cream corn, except creamier, thicker and colder…YUM!
I would definitely try sweet corn ice cream! Sounds interesting!!
Had my first pupusa this morning at the farmer’s market– Yum! I will definitely be having that again! I did not see the sweet corn ice cream, or I would have tried it, especially since it is SO FLIPPING HOT out there! Had to go with the pecan roll from Java Joe’s instead.
oh, i definitely would try sweet corn ice cream, too! i got some wonderful basil at our farmer’s market today, too….already had some on a tomato sandwich. yum!!
Wow what is a pupusa??? It looks so good!
And sweet corn ice cream sounds really neat! I would love to try it!
I dunno what it is that pupusa but it looks AWESOME!! And sweet corn ice cream? Heck yeah!!!
I dated a guy from Iowa, he lives in Harlan. There is a restaurant there that if you ever by some chance end up in Harlan you should definitely check out. It’s called Joe’s. Cajun guy from Louisiana runs it and it is sooooooooo good. Best cheesecake I have ever had. And this fish soup he made… ugh, I need to go back!!!
I’ve never even thought of sweet corn ice cream! And I found a place in Tampa that has to-die-for pupusas… if you’re ever in the area we have to go!
I would totally try it! That sounds and looks wonderful….authentic! Thank you for sharing!
Sweet corn ice cream sounds good! Papusas even better…used to eat them from a little whole in the wall in Baltimore- so good!
Actually, “hommus” is the more authentic transliteration for both the dip itself and the chickpeas that make it up…”hummus” is the Americanized version, and it should be pronouced with more of an “o” sound.

Everytime you show a pupusa on IGE I get super jealous, but today’s extra-cheesy pupusa looks like the best one yet! And the sweet corn ice cream?! All I can say is, yum!!
I was a pupusa. I might say that every saturday after you post them. The ice cream also looks amazing. I want that too.
Can’t wait to see what you make with that gorgeous produce!
omg LOVE papusas!!! I’ve never bought one pre-made anywhere, but I got a big pack at Costco and they were so good. As for the ice cream, I would try it in a second!! I’ve gotten garlic ice cream in Gilroy (garlic capital of the world they say) and it was actually quite good!
In the middle east, it’s pronounced hommus. Many arab grocers have “authentic” cans of ‘hommus’. We buy the Sabra brand hummus at Costco, it’s got a lot more flavor than the Basha brand (but both are good!)
Hi, I’ve been reading your blog for a while and I really enjoy going through your posts! It’s an awesomee blog you’ve got
we’ve got ice cream flavours like red bean and yam over here!
As for the sweet corn ice cream, it’s actually quite common where I’m from (Singapore).. and yes it tastes real good!
Yes, I would try it!
Sweet corn ice cream sounds divine. Not only would I eat it, I would fly to Iowa to do so.
I would never have thought that would be good but it sounds amazing!!
so, i opened up my current issue of vegetarian times mag and started picking out recipes for the week. lo and behold – there’s a recipe for Sweet Corn Ice Cream!
i would definitely try sweet corn ice cream! to put it a way joey from friends would appreciate: “Sweet corn?! GOOD! Ice Cream ? GOOD! sweet corn ice cream?…gooooooood!” ha.
yeah what IS the difference between hommus and hummus?! the section of my gstore that carries what i know as HUmmus says HOmmus above it and it weirds me out!!
