I spent my morning walk trying to explain the ins & outs of Facebook to my Mom, who just joined. Some highlights include:
- “So, wait. If I just want to tell everyone ‘I love the world!’ I have to post a status update? What’s a status update?? Is that my wall??? What about my feed????”
- “There was no friend button!” “Yes there is Mom.” “No, seriously, I even asked the help section ‘where’s the friend button?’ but they were no help.”
- “Mom, if you want to message someone, you have to post on their wall, not yours.”
- “I can’t friend your brother, because he told me not to, but can I like him? Will he see it?”
Ohhhh – GOOD TIMES!! All teasing is in good fun, btw. We were having ourselves a mighty good chuckle. She says they need a “Facebook for Seniors” class. Now there’s an idea…
Breakfast was a big bowl of Mocha Butter Oats!
In the mix:
- 1/4 cup each old fashioned oats, milk, brewed coffee
- 1 banana (1/2 sliced in while cooking, 1/2 on top)
- drizzle of Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter
- drizzle of Almond Butter
Inspired by my Peanut Butter Mocha Smoothie and dripping in goodness!
The coffee flavor in the oats was very subtle but so tasty.
The idea of adding coffee actually came to me from a reader who said she always adds a splash of her latte into her Starbucks oatmeal. AWESOME idea!
I brought some leftover Pad Thai for lunch today.
You know what? I tried another bite as I was packing my lunch after dinner, and it actually wasn’t that bad when it had cooled down! I often find that meals taste completely different when they’re piping hot vs room temperature.
Still a little too sweet for my liking, but better.
With a side of carrot chips and Barney Butter for midday snacking.
I actually forgot I had these babies until I was rummaging around my pantry last night and came across a whole stash of them.
Along with TEN different Larabars that I had no idea were in the there! Apparently I hoard them?!
I’m happy to report that I got 90% of my errands done last night – whew! Just have a few more items to pick up this evening, a bag to pack and itinerary to print – then I’m home free! I AM SO EXCITED!
Happy September 1st!

How long do you spend on Facebook everyday? Do you check in mostly in the mornings, nights or all day?
Come join the convo on my Iowa Girl Eats page, if you’d like!

hahaha. That’s hilarious with your mom. I surprised my mom hasn’t gotten on facebook yet, considering how much she loves to know what is going on in others’ lives.
Cooking coffee into your oatmeal is GENIUS! I have to try that.
I don’t really like Facebook that much and could never get into it. I check it once a week or so. I always swore Twitter was lame too but I recently signed up and I’m HOOKED. Twitter > Facebook.
Hahaha my parents have inquired about Facebook but I don’t think they will ever join! I check it about 2-3 times a day for a few minutes. Usually when I get to work and later in the afternoon! Since I started blogging I rarely check up on Facebook anymore!
hahah my mom has NO CLUE about facebook, and my dad tried his hand at twitter and failed. apparently i had last signed on to twitter, so when he pulled up the page he didn’t know what to do (and apparently didn’t see my picture on it!), and just randomly updated my status with the only twitter name he knows: craigyferg (craig ferguson). i signed on at work the next morning and got a great laugh. SO SO jealous about your trip, it makes me wanna travel so badly!! cant wait to hear all about it!
haha that’s funny. my parents joined too & have a ton of questions all the time. and i get on facebook a few times a day. i have the internet on my phone so i do on there mostly… not as big a time waster as it was in college!
I check FB a few times a day for a little bit each time. I love FB!!!!!
Ahhh, mothers. I’m probably the age of your mom (no, probably older) and you should see me try to explain it all to MY mother who is 85, has 2 manual typewriters, and refuses to be within 10 feet of a computer.
“Somebody printed out your twizzler thing for me??” \
“Huh? Oh … Twitter? Whaaat? You mean Facebook?”
“No, the other stuff. The stuff on the computer.”
It took a good 5 minutes to realize she meant blog. Dang, I thought she was going to give me a coupon for Twizzlers.
I hope you have a wonderful and safe trip!
Kristin, where do you get your larabars? I swear I can’t find them at Hyvee anymore. Maybe I’m just blind though..
Abby – I think all the metro HyVees moved the Laras. They’re now in the health food/organic section w/ the protein bars, which at Ankeny and Mills Civic is in the front of the store by the pharmacy, at University they’re about a third of the way into the store on the pharmacy side.
Zomg!!! You’re leaving so soon!! I am going to be so jealous reading your recap…I can feel it coming already! I really hope that article comes in useful!
P.S. The idea of my mum on facebook is disastrously funny!
Haha, my mom joined Facebook last summer and then un-joined a day later – it freaked her out too much!
I used to be on Facebook all the time, but now that I have my blog/Twitter, I check a little less. It’s still a great way to keep in touch with others, though! I love all social media – it’s just so neat to see how far technology has come.
Oh my goodness I am a facebook addict. But I think it’s because it’s always open in a tab on my explorer so I just click to it. And I have it on my phone so I get notifications instantly. I could do without it for a day though!
This is hilarious! My mom is the exact same way with facebook. Cracks me up.
oh how cute is your mom?? i had veryy similar questions coming at me from my mom when she joined! i think my favorite that you posted is this : “I can’t friend your brother, because he told me not to, but can I like him? Will he see it?”
I check Facebook several times a day. There is this guy that I am interested in, and I am becoming a little obsessed with checking his profile page/status updates/etc. I should probably lay off a little.
or ask him on a date.
My parents joined Facebook earlier this year and I had to have that talk with them. They still call me with random questions. Oh, seniors!
I’m check my facebook a couple of times a day. It’s a great way to keep in touch with everyone! My mom joined 6 months ago and used to have tons of questions. Now she is very facebook savy and gets on hers more than I get on mine
I am not into Facebook very much. I am at the age where 60% of the people I know don’t use it and the others do. I signed up earlier this year because the donor woman for my son’s Make a Wish trip asked me to do it. It was too funny because I had “one” friend for a whilte and was too lazy to add more, lol! Now I have a few friends but honestly, I rarely check it.
As for Facebook for Seniors, that is too funny. Our library has classes like that for people to learn Facebook and other Social Networkingg.
I was reluctant to set up Facebook, I’ve got to be close to your moms age, so I can relate. One day my son e-mailed me that he had set up a Facebook account for me. Filled it all out and even posted a nice picture. I have to admit it’s fun. I get to see alot of pictures they take of their baby with their phones, and things I would miss out on. Your Mom will really like it. I check it a few times a day.
my co-worker used to put coffee in her coach’s oats for taste, and i always thought she was crazy! but maybe i should try it! hahaha.
oh man, facebook is like crack. it’s so helpful yet kind of sad that my friends and i wouldn’t know much about eachother’s everyday activities w/out facebook!
OMG, your breakfast looks so divine! Now that we’re finally experiencing cooler weather, I may be more apt to make myself something hot for breakfast. Definitely need to try Mocha Butter Oats!
I recently had a very similar conversation with my own mom who also recently joined facebook. She was SO overwhelmed initially that I just had to laugh – and now she changes her profile pic every couple days and manages things like a pro!
Wait! I made a batch of rice pudding last night (trying to find the recipe for the rice pudding at the papusa stand at the farmer’s market). My afternoon snack is rice pudding with cranberries and slivered almonds. Why not put in almond butter and chocolate instead?!!! I can’t wait to get home and mix this up! Thanks for the idea!
I think my mom has more friends on FB than I do! She’s always filling me in on the lives of my friends. Kinda funny
The toppings on your oatmeal make it look like ice cream – yum!
My parents just bought their first cellphone and my mom joined facebook last month. They are slowly joining the 21st century! My mom told me that it’s best that we’re not online friends. She must have heard from other parents about the horror of seeing drunken pictures of their children and awkward TMI updates. I like to think that I’m pretty clean on FB, but there are things I don’t want my parents seeing.
oh Lord. that oatmeal looks ridiculous… :nom nom nom: so hungry right now!
Facebook really is for seniors now–I have two grandparents on it now!
[...] seeing the post on Iowa Girl Eats yesterday for coffee oats, I HAD to try them. PRONTO. As you can see by the photo of my desk [...]
They have Facebook classes for older adults – check your local library, babe!
I’m kind of over Facebook because I love Twitter so much, but I still check it several times a day because my non-Tweeting friends use it constantly. My mom uses Facebook, as do most of my aunts and uncles. Older adults are more tech savvy than we realize – my grandparents Skype with my aunt and her new baby daily!
I know you were joking about the “Facebook for Seniors” class, but tell your Mom to call her local library and see if they have a class on using Facebook! Ours does and it’s really popular!
