The birthday celebration continues! My Dad had to work late tonight, so Ben and I had the birthday girl over for dinner.
On the menu? Chicken Soup…for the soul! (Remember those books?! I seriously had them all – HA!)
This is my Mom’s Mom’s recipe for chicken soup, which she’s passed down to me, and I thought it’d be a nice little birthday dinner for her.
I made it the same way I usually do except, instead of using frozen egg noodles, I used my homemade pasta noodles! Yeah!
I ran a knife through the long strands, cutting them into more manageable, non-face-whipping-sized pieces, then cooked them right in the chicken broth. So good!! Oh, FYI, if you’ve been reading IGE for awhile, then you know my most loathed food in the world is cooked carrots. I make only ONE exception – which is for this exact soup!
I served some Parmesan Garlic Bread on the side.
My Mom served this bread at dinner 2-3 times a week growing up. It’s just lightly buttered bread, sprinkled with parmesan cheese & garlic powder, then broiled for a couple minutes. I got a kick out of serving it to her for a change!
Oooo, it’s so chewy and buttery and cheesey. Oh, and for optimal results, you HAVE to use white bread. It’s a must.
Down home cookin’ for cool, Fall day and a birthday celebration to boot!
In other news, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about the fact that my abs and arms are sore from kneading pasta dough for 8 minutes on Saturday. I mean…really?
?
?
Seriously though, I must have been giving my A+ effort, because I am letting out audible "ow’s" from the soreness. Ok, that’s just sad. I need to hit the weight room!!!!!!
Tonight’s agenda = Gossip Girl, baby. This season is intriguing. I’m kind of hating how everyone’s just accepting the fact that Dan has a baby and, furthermore, that Serena is even pondering getting back together with him. HE’S YOUR STEP BROTHER, I want to scream! Not even former SB – CURRENT!
Teenagers today. Sheesh!
Good night!

Do you make any dishes that have been passed down in your family? What are they?

I make my aunt’s calzones! Your soup looks cozy!
I get sore from things like that too! I am always quasi horrified at myself and yet weirdly pleased…?? Either way, great workout, great pasta!
Happy birthday to your lovely Mom!
I have a lot of family recipes. Lasagna, a baked rice, and lots of dessert recipes. I love family recipes! Yum!
Sadly, no family recipes. Nestle Tollhouse isn’t exactly a close relative, teehee
But I definitely used to read all of those Chicken Soup books back in the day!
oh I love the look of that soup – AND The yummy parmesan toast!
My mom’s rhubarb crisp and chocolate chip cookies will always be a favorite of mine. (She’s a better baker than a cook! Shhh. . don’t tell her I said that.)
My mom made the exact same garlic toast! I still make it today too! But whenever she was feeling crazy, she would add shredded mozzarella. Now that was a real treat.
Oh thats right, its a GG night!
So sweet to make such a wonderful comfort meal for your Mommy’s birthday!
I took my daughter to my Mom’s house over the weekend and my sister was there and we had a good ole fashion girls night out–family style!
My mom made bread eggs for me- soft poached eggs cut over toasted buttered white bread—omgee….FABOOSH!
Gotta love family tradition!
SERIOUSLY about Dan and the baby. I mean, we’re talking about Georginia here! DUHHHHH!
I’m not allowed to share the recipes of the family dishes I make… but there are plenty!!
Oh I wish my mom lived closer! So glad you get to celebrate life with her! My grandmother makes the best brownies…yum!
My Mom makes these seriously delish new potatoes in a lemon butter sauce with a little bacon and a hint of parsely. I have her recipe but it never tastes like hers. yummmmmm!!
My mom’s meatloaf is the only meatloaf I’ll eat, besides my own–Which I make exactly like she does (It tastes close to hers, but not perfectly). And my brother-in-law makes the absolute best mashed potatoes in the world–Mine never even come close!
Happy Birthday to your mom! I make stuffed shells which is basically lasagna but in a jumbo pasta shell. My kids love it and my mom made it when I was growing up. Delish!
I usually make my Mama’s goulash, YUMMY! But I can never get mine just like hers. When I was growing up my Grandmother use to make candied sweet potatoes…but they weren’t what most people think of when they think of candied sweet potatoes. No marshmellow, brown sugar and butter here, oh no! She went all out…she would slice the sweet potatoes about 1/4 inch thick, roll them in sugar and then drop them in hot grease! The would fry until the sugar was perfectly carmalized and the inside was creamy and sweet….I have tried several times to recreate these, but don’t quite get’er done. I think as you age you naturally start producing some sort of essence, if you will, that you put off. Hence why your children and grandchildren always think your cooking is the best. Your laundry smells the best. etc…
Back to the step-brother/step-sister situation on GG. Funny enough my niece is actually married to her step-brother (current). I have lovingly taught their children to refere to them as Aunt Mama and Uncle Daddy
Oh yeah! A lot of the meals I make are passed down. One of my favorites is a sauerkraut soup that has been made for many generations:)
I love it when a meal not only tastes good but brings back warm memories as well.
I made that Parmesan Garlic Bread after seeing it on your site ..it is delicious and so simple!
What a nice birthday for your mama! My grandma’s butter cookies are definitely a family favorite. They use almond extract instead of vanilla, which is unique. We love making these at Christmas!
OMGeeeeee!!! That parmesan garlic bread looks so yummy! And so EASY! Double fab….
Mmm…gotta love chicken noodle soup! Looks yummy
To S’s defense they totally were together before Rufus got back with Lily. Just sayin!
That’s cute how you made your mom one of the dinner’s she made for you as a kid!
Looks tasty! My parents don’t cook anything their parents did (lol), but I’m taking my dad’s hoppin’ john recipe, his chili recipe and my mom’s black beans and rice recipe for sure!
Yes – my grandmother’s Caldo Verde soup! It’s a Portuguese soup with kale, chourico and potatoes. By far the best soup on the planet!
Corn Soup (I gave you the recipe!), Gumbo, Jambalaya, Ham & Potatoes, Chicken Fricassee, Black Eyed Peas & Rice, and my momma’s green beans are just a few!
I made the soup recipe for our lunch today. It was good and rather filling and made a nice accompaniment to a salad– but I did end up adding some parsley to it, as I found it otherwise a bit on the bland side!
That soup looks delicious! And with homemade pasta??? You are a champ!
Sadly, my grandma died with all her recipes and we don’t have any passed down really. It’s sad.
