I’m kind of sad right now…it was the last Farmer’s Market of the season today!
I literally cannot believe it’s over.
I feel like I was just at opening day!

Going to the market was something I looked forward to all week long. What’s not to look forward to when you’ve got freshly ground nut butters,

bakery-fresh bread,

and Pupusas waiting for you?
![]()
My God the Pupusas!!!
Of course I also adored being able to easily stock up on local produce like vine-ripened tomatoes,
![]()
Iowa Sweet Corn,
and dozens of different veggies!

The company wasn’t so bad either.
I loved spending time strolling through the market with my Mom,

Grandma,

girlfriends,

and my love.

It was as if the rain knew to keep away every Saturday morning, and today was no different. The sky was blue, the clouds were fluffy and the sun was shining.
Perfect day to end the season!
Some gorgeous tomatoes caught my eye,
along with those mini pumpkins and gourds you know I adore.
I made sure to stock up on all my faves, like Chipotle Goat Cheese,
butternut squash,
mini pumpkins,
and flavored pasta!
Here’s my loot.
Oh, since it’s Halloween weekend, there was costumes and candy galore. I enjoyed a snickers bar,
and some double bubble gum. WhoooaAAHHH!
After we said our fare-thee-wells, until next year, Ben and I headed over to check out the new location for Trader’s Joes. Should be open in the next week or two. I am DYING of excitement!
Then it was off for a Costco run.
It was packed!
I had “lunch” consisting of a million samples, while Ben enjoyed a hot dog. Hot dog, does he love those hot dogs.
The reason we went to Costco was to pick up some candy for the trick-or-treaters who will be out tonight, and we got so distracted by the samples that we almost walked out without getting the candy!
I usually try and pick up candy that I don’t like, so I don’t eat a ton of it (if you’ve been reading IGE for awhile, then you know I have a candy addiction that rivals a cracked out 6 year old’s) but despite my best intentions I always end up eating it anyways. This year I decided to get candy I do like, but limit myself to 5 or 6 pieces. I might as well enjoy it if I’m going to eat it anyways!
I’m looking forward to the Sour Punch Straws, while Ben can’t wait to get his paws on some skittles.
Muwahahahaha!
Well the Hawkeyes are on in T-minus 45 minutes (let’s see if we can redeem ourselves from last week’s ridiculous loss!) then it’s gym time followed by candy time! Hopefully Ben and I can save some for the trick-or-treaters!!
See you!

What’s your favorite Halloween candy?
Mine’s Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. UGH THEY ARE SO DELICIOUS!!

Mini Peanut butter cups are awesome! Have you seen the super teeny tiny peanut butter cups that TJ’s has? Like the size of a dime. I always buy some “for my nephews.” ;D
where is that adorable grey coat from? love it!
I went to the last Farmer’s Market of the season today too and it made me really sad. There was a band playing wistful country music and I almost teared up as I was getting into the car!
Awww, so sad the markets are over.
Oh well, it was a good year.
We had trick or treat on Thursday. I never understood why they don’t have it on the actual Halloween night like most places.
Have fun tonight!!
I’m sad for the market to be done for you – no more pictures! You should just post the occasional photo every so often when winter days are cold and gloomy. I think I’m going to make a point to travel out for that market next summer. We literally have nothing here apart from a few stands…and the stands are selling the same stuff.
I agree with favorite Halloween candy (and those RPB Eggs on Easter!)
I am so jealous of your farmer’s market! It’s amazing! my favorite candy is peanut butter cups, mmmm. . .
Last night at the local watering hole we were discussing what we loved to get on trick-or-treat night when we were kids! My two were Reeses Peanut Butter Cups & Smarties….I still love them! And the kids in my neighbor hood way back then always loved to stop in at Davey’s Diner Club cuz you got to choose a FULL SIZE candy bar from the glass case that the cash register sat on!! Glory Days!!
At least a new Trader Joes takes the edge off losing the Farmer’s Market!
I love butterfingers & twix. Strangely, I can go without the full size versions, but give me the fun size & I lose my mind! Ugh, why are mini things so much better?!?
Snickers were always mine!
When isn’t Costco packed?!?! I love Twix and chewy candy (gummy bears, Starburst, etc.).
As far as I know tomorrow is trick or treating around here. I sure hope so because I don’t have any candy tonight.
Reese’s PB Cups, no question about it. And those chewy peanut butter taffy/nougat things with the peanut butter center (that come in the orange & black wrappers). Peanut butter anything, really!
We’re watching your Hawkeyes right now! Then my Ducks play later tonight. My fav halloween candy is either reeses pb cups or skittles. Just picked up a variety of bulk candy this morning: chocolatey goodness and skittles, laffy taffy and tootsie rolls for the trick or treaters.
Oh Kristin…you are gonna be in SO MUCH TROUBLE when that Trader Joe’s opens! I find it’s FAR to easy to pop into the one on my way home from work a good 2-3 times a week:) hahahhahahaha….
MMM… I love pupusas!
My favorite candy for halloween is three musketeers. I used to always steal them from my youngest brother’s loot the day after. Too bad he’s no longer that little!
So jealous that you all have an awesome farmers markets and another TJ’s going in! We have neither here! Enjoy your weekend!
life begins and ends with wildberry skittles, kit-kats, and take 5(chyeahhhhh). by the way–i’m typing this with fake brains and blood being meticulously applied all over my neck. best holiday every year…enjoy your trick or treaters!
It looks like your Hawkeyes are definitely redeeming themselves just like my Huskers. We still have one farmers market that is going for two more weeks, the kids and I are going tomorrow with their Halloween costumes on. Trader Joes opens here in Lincoln in early December I believe. My favorite used to be things like Starburst and Smarties although now I would much rather have baked fall goodies full of pumpkin and apples.
Without a DOUBT Reeses… Twix are fun… any chocolate candy though is ok!
Markets ended in Northern Indiana today, too. *Tears* I’m jealous of your TJs that’s coming! All the more reasons to come visit friends in the Des Moines area
I am so jealous your farmers market sells pupusas! I’ve never had one, but I’m dying to try them now. And yes, last day is very sad. My local market sells amazing kettle corn, and I had to restrain myself from buying them out!
Ugh, I love Halloween candy. I think my favorites are anything with toffee like Skor or Health bars, Reese’s anything (especially those insanely delicious Easter eggs!), and milky way midnight!
I’m glad the weather held up on the last market of the season!
I read that it’s possible to eat 1,000 calories on those samples at Costco or Sam’s.
It can be a great way to try new stuff, though (or to sneak extra tastes of stuff you know you love
).
Sooooo jealous of your impending Trader Joe’s and Costco! I have to drive at least two hours to get to either one! We have a Costco membership, though, because there’s one close to my dad; we hit it every time we visit him. I make homemade granola, and all of the supplies (oats, nuts, etc.) are cheaper and better there. And I’m weirdly in love with their store brand albacore tuna. For years I didn’t eat canned tuna at all, and then the week my mother died I ate it every day, and I’ve been eating it ever since.
I’ve gotten snobby enough about chocolate—and I’ve never been big on non-chocolate candy for the most part—that most Halloween candy doesn’t tempt me anymore. But I bought mini Reese’s cups and mini packs of Oreos to hand out. I figure whatever we don’t give out, my husband will eat—or it will end up in some baking or ice cream making project!
I went to an AWESOME market in St. Pete’s Florida today! I got to try my first raw veggie burger…LOVE! Thank god I’m not at home, otherwise I would have bought everything!!
And I have been eating candy GALORE. I am a chocoholic…I haven’t been able to keep the twix out of my mouth! My body doesn’t appreciate it, but Halloween only comes once a year, right?
I can’t believe that farmer’s market season is over either, I was so sad today at our local market! Luckily there are a few around town that last through early December — but boy am I going to miss all that fresh warm weather produce
i love dark chocolate anything!
i CANNOT get over how cheap your produce is!
I can’t wait for that TJ’s to open…my friend and I are already planning our road trip! 2 hours each way is totally worth it!
I love anything chocolate, so this halloween I bought gum…I hate gum!
Mini Twix and Twizzlers! YUM! =)
Here in Florida this is the time of year that our Farmer’s Market’s start, we are so backwards from the rest of the country down here I swear.
I am actually not a fan of Halloween Candy, but I LOVE to give it out to the Kids that come knocking at the front door. Unfortunately, I will be at work this year so I wont get to see all of the Cute Kids, but I did get some pretty great candy when I went to the store this week… kit kats, twix, crunch, reese’s peanut butter cups, skittles, snickers, and 3 musketeers!!
I have to pick one favorite??? I can’t think of any candy I don’t like though they fall in different levels according to what is available. I like a good quality chocolate best (Dove Dark, Betty Janes (local). The least fav is cheap waxy chocolate (Shari, Palmer, etc). When our kids were little, I’d buy about 1/2 the candy they need and my they would come back to the house 1/2 way. Then dump out the candy to go out again. I would have them tell me which stuff that they didn’t like and I would pass out during the second 1/2 so I wouldn’t eat it. (if I ran out, I would pass out some of the other stuff they had picked up….who really needs all that candy…I’d just eat it if it was in the house!)
Would you believe that in my freege in Athens (Greece) I have TJ’s almond butter, pecans and kirkland vanilla from Costco!!!! They’re all here and they keep coming!!!!!
We have been known to buy a huge bucket of Sour Punch Straws. Even the baby likes them.
mmm- Farmers mkt – I hope I get to mine today – but lucky us – they move into Proctor’s Theatre during the Winter – gotta love it – can’t wait to see what Farmers bring in the Winter – curry, I hope!
Today’s donation day – for Albany Medical Center NICU! I can’t wait till they see my 18 year old preemie boy! (born 2lbs 7 oz – now 6 feet tall!)
It is always sad to see the farmer’s markets go for the season, isn’t it?
Great photos!
I am not partial to sweets, aside from the usual time of months- so I am going to say my favorite thing are the mini-bags of potato chips
The Des Moines Farmer’s Market is the greatist ever!!
So exciting about Trader Joes opening….is it close to your house?
Only 20 days until Downtown Des Moines’ Winter Market!
Get your countdown on!
Great pictures. Nice that you took the time to share it all with us. Yes, you will feel a little bit of a loss the next couple Saturdays. But at least it gives you something to look forward to in the spring when the Farmer’s Market opens up again.
