I feel like such a manly-man. I made steak and potatoes tonight…for myself!
Ok, so I actually planned on making this love-platter for both Ben AND myself for dinner tonight, but learned at the last minute he had to work late.
Usually, when I know ahead of time, I pick the nights he works late to make my husband-un-friendly meals. Pancakes (I know who doesn’t like pancakes?!) most tofu dishes, anything involving herbs and/or copious amounts of onions and garlic…
You know – the good stuff.
Sometimes you get an idea in your head though, and you just can’t move past it. I’d been thinking about crispy, oven-roasted potatoes and juicy, top-sirloin steak all day today so I said to heck with it, and moved onward as planned!
Ok can we all collectively squeal over these teeny-tiny potatoes!? Ready? "Squeeeeeeeal!"
They are the cutest little things and I about died at the grocery store when I picked them up. I knew they’d be the ultimate potatoes for roasting!
I seasoned up a handful with olive oil and garlic salt then roasted them in a 410 degree oven for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
Right?!
Meanwhile I seasoned a bacon-wrapped top sirloin steak with Lawry’s Seasoning Salt, seared it on both sides for a couple minutes each, then gave the bacon a quick sear too. (I usually toss the bacon before eating the steak, but who wants to look at raw bacon? PS WHO IS GOING TO BACONFEST THIS WEEKEND?! I tragically missed my 4 minute window of opportunity to purchase tickets. DISLIKE!) Finally, I popped the steak in the oven with the potatoes for about 5 minutes to finish cooking. Make sure the flat-top skillet or whatever pan you’re using is oven-safe before you do that!
Just like that, dinner was ready! What a simple & satisfying one, to boot!
These potatoes seriously almost made me shed a tear.
The outsides were crisp and salty, and when I bit into the potatoes, the skin snapped.
It snapped!
The insides were smooth and creamy. GOSH what a great potato for roasting! No cutting necessary and the perfect consistency. Plus, they’re. so. smaalllll.
Let’s talk about this steak.
100% natural Amana top sirloin steak wrapped in bacon. Oh yes.
Ben is the resident steak whisperer, but I had to fend for myself in his absence tonight…
Ok, it wasn’t as evenly cooked as my better half’s, but holy tenderness! I made sure to let my steak rest for about 5 minutes before cutting into it, so the juices wouldn’t run out, and omg it was SO good.
Only a few more weeks until we can start cooking our steaks outside on the GRILL! Can I get a hell yes?! 8)
Well I’m heading over to my parents house to get my old tax files tonight. For the first time in 13 years my Dad WON’T be doing my taxes (much to his relief, I’m sure
) and I have to get all my papers in order for the tax…guy?? – accountant – to look over when I meet with him later this week.
I had a pretty negative experience with H&R Block last week, so I’m going with a local accountant my family knows and trusts. With having to claim (is that the word you use? I am savvy about a lot of things, but taxes is NOT one of them!) income from 2 jobs this year plus the blog, then factor in a house, marriage and the works – it’s getting pretty crazy!
Ew. Just…ew.
Wish me luck!

On a scale of 1-10, how money-savvy are you? Are you a saver or a spender?
When it comes to taxes, I am a negative 10, but I feel like I’m very savvy when it comes to savings and investments. Ben and I are lucky in that we both have similar philosophies when it comes to how we handle our money – SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!
