We broke records today!

The last hottest April 3rd on record in Des Moines, Iowa was in 1982, when it reached 82 degrees. Today, we crushed that record, soaring to 85 degrees. What an awesome, unexpected surprise! 8)

I had Ben dig out the patio chairs from the basement and plop them on the back deck after lunch, so I could sit in the sun while working on freelance stuff. All of the sudden I sat up with a start. My full belly and the warm sunshine had sent me straight to snoozeville – HA!

Let’s talk about this lunch though, mmkay? My Mom hit a total homer with Southwest Sliders, sweet potato fries and fresh fruit salad!

She got the slider recipe from Gateway Market. They’re just mini burger patties cooked up on the stove, but the toppings make them special.

A mini bun is slathered with southwest sauce, aka ranch dressing + chili powder,

and the burgers are topped with fresh guacamole and homemade pico de gallo. Squeal – aren’t they too cute?!

On the side, we had sweet, crunchy/creamy Alexia Sweet Potato Fries (seriously can’t get enough of these babies,)

and fresh fruit salad, including strawberries, apples, mangoes and oranges. YUM!

I brought The Best Chocolate Sheet Cake. Ever. to share for dessert. Ugghhhhh it is soo good – you’ve GOT to make it.

AND – Ben LOVED it! "I can’t love it as much as cookie cake, because well, you know, but that is some damn good cake!" I’d call it a success! :D

This afternoon Ben and I stretched our legs in the sun and went for a long walk around the area, stopping to pick up a few forgotten ingredients for dinner at the grocery store. We made it back just in time, I think. The wind is picking up, and the sky’s getting a little gray. I think there’s a spring thunderstorm on the horizon! :D

Before any rain could fall though, Ben got our dinner on the grill. New York Strips. Boo yah.

These pups were $4.99/piece at the store this morning and Ben, the steak whisperer, seasoned them simply with garlic salt, olive oil & pepper, before grilling them quickly over super high heat.

They sliced up like buttah. Gosh I just love a good steak!!!!!

We picked up the biggest twice baked potatoes known to man on our walk, which complimented our steaks perfectly.

I am many things, and a steak and potatoes girl is definitely one of them! :)

Housekeeping:

1. The movie 127 Hours: Great story, but the movie – meeehhh – it wasn’t the best film I’ve ever seen. If you can watch it for free, I’d say go for it, otherwise I’d read the book.

2. The book Unbroken: AMAZING. Not only was it written flawlessly, but the personal story of Louis Zamperini, star Olympic runner/WWII POW survivor, was absolutely unreal. You wouldn’t believe me if I tried to tell you what this guy went through as a young pilot during WWII. Be inspired, read this book.

Ok, I think that’s it! Ben and I are watching the finale of Chopped All Stars, then Real Housewives of Orange County tonight. The OC cast has always been my favorite, but boy they’ve got some hot messes on the show right now!

I’d say I’m good at making sauces – like for stir frys or macaroni & cheese. Ben is the BEST at making steaks!
