Sweets in the City

Behold – the BEST cupcake I have ever had. A Lava Fudge cupcake from Georgetown Cupcake! :D

I can’t tell you how many people told me “You’ve GOT to get a Georgetown Cupcake while you’re in town,” when they found out I was coming here. “It’s the absolute BEST!!!” they’d say.

Now, I’ve had my share of artisan cupcakes in the cities I’ve visited over the years. Some deliver on the hype and some…don’t. Still, I had high hopes for these babies.

One afternoon during our trip, after a lovely lunch with our friends Dylan & Kim who live in the area, we stumbled upon the bakery and were immediately hit by the sweet, magical scent swirling out of the open, bakery door. The smell of buttercream, chocolate and vanilla. Heavenly!

We walked in and were utterly charmed by the whimsical pink & black decor, then started drooling over cake stand after cake stand chock full of cupcakes! :D

It was not all roses though, oh no. ‘Cause then we had to PICK a flavor! Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate PB Swirl, Honey Banana, Salted Caramel and Milk Chocolate Birthday Cake! How would I ever choose?!

Luckily Kim is somewhat of a Georgetown Cupcake expert and steered me in the right direction: Lava Fudge Cupcake – a valrhona chocolate cupcake with a rich fudge core, topped with vanilla icing with a fudge star drizzle.

AKA – cupcake crack. CRACK. This. Was. AMAZING!!!! The chocolate cupcake was craaazy moist, and the vanilla icing absolutely melted in my mouth. Some icings are hard and over-whipped – this literally melted on my tongue.

The thing that really got me though? The molten lava chocolate fudge center!! Like, drippy, molten fudge. I would move to this city just to have this cupcake once a week…

Good thing they ship – muwahahaha! :D

Thanks for all who suggested Georgetown Cupcake, and to Kim for showing me the light of molten-fudge centers! ;)

  2. DC has the BEST cupcakes – they have a lot of different cupcakeries – all really delicious!

    I love carrot cake cupcakes…or peanut butter & chocolate…or red velvet…or gingerbread…..ok I love them all:)

  4. shandy (@webgals) 05.23.2011

OMG! So jealous! I’ve watched their TV show for a while and would LOVE to try one of their cupcakes. I was in Vegas this weekend and tried the cupcakes at Sweet Surrender at The Palazzo. It was good…but I still like our hometown Carefree Cupcake better. I’d love to compare theirs to Georgetown Cupcakes…

  5. Tammy 05.23.2011

I love Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting but after seeing the Key Lime cupcake on the Georgetown menu I’m sure that would become a favorite of mine fast!

  6. Emily 05.23.2011

Call me crazy, but I’m not a huge cupcake person. Or cake for that matter. Dessert is by far my favorite thing ever, but cakey things are just not dense enough for me, too much air! But if I had to choose, definitely chocolate. I’ve never had red velvet, I have no idea what it tastes like!

  7. erica 05.23.2011

    omg. droooooooooooling.
    that looks amazing! :)
    i love all cupcakes! i don’t discriminate ;p

  8. Elizabeth 05.23.2011

GTown Cupcakes is amazing!!! I love those guys, I always go to the Bethesda location because it is so much less busy! They also have a strawberry lava fudge that is completely amazing!

  9. Stefanie 05.23.2011

I can’t pick a favorite unless I know what the toppings are going to be, I love red velvet but haven’t had a cupcake in that flavor that I like. I know it sounds silly but red velvet cupcakes and red velvet cake ARE different! Your frequent mentioning on Funfetti caused me to go out and buy a box of mix and some frosting a few weeks ago, yet I haven’t made them yet :( However I think the upcoming 3 day weekend is the perfect Funfetti occasion!!

  10. Melissa 05.23.2011

That looks insane! Funny, Michelle at Brown Eyed Baker asked this today, too! I’ve gotta go with Funfetti with Rainbow Chip frosting. I know, it’s commercial, but it’s fantastic!

  11. Lauren 05.23.2011

Oh my, that looks incredible. I’ve been to DC many times but never to Georgetown Cupcake. What is wrong with me?!?! LoL

  12. Funfetti is a winner. Sometimes I wonder why I ever bake from scratch after I eat one of those!!!!!

  13. Susie 05.23.2011

Looks phenom! I have always been a die hard chocoholic but
I have recently developed a passion for vanilla bean.
Next time you are in Dallas try Society Bakery- they put Sprinkles to shame;)

  14. Chocolate with buttercream icing :)

  15. I am a total vanilla cake/vanilla frosting girl…but a few sprinkles never hurt :)

  16. j/k 05.23.2011

My fave cupcake is a really easy homemade Key Lime Cupcake recipe from Betty Crocker. It uses a lemon cake mix and lime jello. It has a lime juice glaze and cream cheese frosting – Amazing!

  17. dmcgirl 05.23.2011

Any and all cupcakes, but it has to have buttercream frosting! The old fashioned, rich, decadent kind!
I esp. like them if I don’t make them.

  18. Beth 05.23.2011

I had my heart set on the key lime cupcake on the board until I saw the photo of the one you chose. Wow!

  19. Stephanie 05.23.2011

    d. other……Next time you are in Cedar Falls, you have to compare the cupcakes to Scratch Cupcakery!! (www.scratchbakery.com) omg….the Salty Dogs are to die for….as are the Lemon Raspberry….and the Oreo….and the Coconut….and yes…AMAZING Red Velvets! ….you truly cannot go wrong. Best thing…you don’t have to travel as far as DC! :) Fun to see all your pics from DC though – what a great place to have in-laws!

  20. Mqchelle 05.23.2011

oh boy….i’m thinkin any flavor is good, but i tend to go towards vanilla, hoping it will taste like wedding cake.

  21. Courtney 05.23.2011

I love strawberry! And red velvet ;)

  22. Charity 05.23.2011

I love anything chocolate. That cupcake looks so good!

  23. Mac 05.23.2011

I love red velvet, in fact I just had a red velvet cake ball from a little cafe I went to today and it was AMAZING! I need to learn the secret to making these thing so thick and moist!

  24. Jen 05.23.2011

We hit up Baked & Wired (a few blocks away from Georgetown Cupcakes) last year and I had the most amazing Lemon cupcake with raspberry filling and a lemon cream cheese icing. I think next time I’m down I am heading back out to Georgetown (it’s a hike from the closest Metro stop but soooooooo worth it!) for cupcakes from both Baked & Wired AND Georgetown Cupcakes!

  25. Ashley 05.23.2011

If you’re still in DC, I HIGHLY recommend a few places:
    -Baked and Wired
    -Lost Dog Cafe
At least go to Lost Dog Cafe… it is the BEST!! Enjoy your time here… it’s a WONDERFUL city. I adore it here.

  26. RachelRay28 05.23.2011

I second the Baked and Wired nomination for your next trip into DC/Georgetown. They have the BEST cupcakes I’ve ever had and I always make a stop or two when I’m in town. Also, my favorite Italian restaurant, Cafe Milano, is in Georgetown close to Ruth’s Chris off of Wisconsin. It’s a little pricey, but the food is so amazing and totally worth it. They even have wines I’ve only been able find in Italy. I think I could go on and on about Georgetown eateries.

  27. Kelly T 05.23.2011

I’m so excited you’re in DC! It’s my hometown and I absolutely love it :)

If you have a chance, there’s one thing you MUST do! Go down to the Potomac River and find Thompson Boathouse (just ask someone, they’ll point you in the right direction) at sunset. Bring a picnic and some drinks and sit on the old bridge that juts out a few yards over the river! It’s an absolutely gorgeous view and a great place to take a breather from the city!

  28. Elyse 05.23.2011

OMG Does that cupcake look good!!! I drooled when I also saw the honey banana and salted caramel flavors!! This is SO going on to do list when I make it to DC! My hands down favorite is a red velvet cupcake and the best one I have ever had here in Dallas was from The Cupcakery. They started in Vegas and are crazy good! http://www.thecupcakery.com/

  29. Grace 05.24.2011

I’m surprised you weren’t steered towards Baked & Wired instead – it’s in Georgetown too. Cupcake looks amazing, but hope you didn’t have to wait in line for an hour to get it! Glad you’re having a great time here in DC. :)

  30. Hope 05.24.2011

That cupcake looks amazing!!! I am a huge fan of the show DC Cupcakes so I would be in heaven to actually go into their store and try a cupcake!! :) My favorite has to be peanut butter. Although, I am with you, I like funfetti too!

  31. Blair 05.24.2011

I love Red Velvet cupcakes. There is a bakery solely for cupcakes in Cedar Falls, Scratch. Scratch has THEEE most amazing vanilla cupcakes. I think they call them wedding day cupcakes. Next time you’re in the Cedar Falls area you will have to check it out!

  32. i love georgetown cupcake!!! i live & work in NYC but my company has an office in arlington, va, which is essentially right on top of g-town. their key lime cupcake will literally send you into orbit it is so good! i am more of a fruity girl than a chocolate girl BUT that said…there is a time and place for it all and that melted center just made my stomach growl!

good thing i put in my lunch order early! baked sole & tomato, avocado, and cuke salad from my fave healthy cafe <3

thanks for posting….and shifting my focus from numbers to cakes!

  33. Amanda 05.24.2011

I am soooo jealous!!! I am the cake queen and want to go there!! Looks yummy!

  34. Amanda 05.24.2011

Oh, and, I can’t even pick a favorite….almond with buttercream, red velvet, and even Funfetti!!

  35. AJ 05.24.2011

    a. CHOCOLATE!! That cupcake looks DELICIOUS!!!!

  36. I’m loving all your DC recaps. Makes me miss that city! Chocolate cupcakes are definitely my favorite, and omg… I would give my left pinky toe to have one of those Lava Fudge Chocolate Cupcakes right about now!

  37. Alli 05.24.2011

So jealous. I love the sisters on the show and the cupcakes always look so good. Glad to hear they are worth the hype.

  38. Kim 05.25.2011

I am going on Sunday for my birthday. Can. Not. Wait!!!

  39. Lexi 05.26.2011

I like G’town Cupcakes, but there are better places here in DC, I think! Red Velvet Cupcakery is amazing, as is Hello Cupcake! Glad you had fun though!

  40. Katie 06.01.2011

I’m surprised you didn’t have to wait in a seriously long line – that place is popular! You definitely lucked out. Their cupcakes are good, but I actually prefer Red Velvet and Baked & Wired. Next visit ;-)

  41. Francesca 01.18.2013

I live near the Georgetown Cupcake location in Bethesda, MD. Hands down the BEST cupcakes I’ve ever eating. The molten lava fudge…seriously amazing! I’ve had sooo many different flavors and I’ve never ever been disappointed. Simply delicious!
