Have you ever been to Jason’s Deli?

JasonsDeli

It’s been a staple in town for at least 5 years, but I’ve never stopped by for a bite. Strangely I think it’s because of the word "deli" in the name. Whenever I see the word "deli" I think of cold sandwiches, which I happen to really hate. This is irrational in and of itself, but what really takes it over the edge of insanity is the fact that two of my favorite places to get hot, fresh sandwiches in town are named Palmer’s Deli and Manhattan Deli. I know.

IMG_1091

At any rate, Ben didn’t have to go into work until 1:00 today and had a craving for JD’s after hearing a couple co-workers rave about it the other day, so he suggested a little lunch date action. I accepted!

IMG_1088

Jason’s Deli does indeed serve hot sandwiches, and has a plethora of healthy soup, sandwich, salad & wrap options on their menu. They’ve also got a HUGE salad bar AND every paying customer gets free soft serve ice cream – wheee!

IMG_1090

Wanting to try as much of the menu as possible, in the shortest amount of time, I went with the "Manager’s Special" ($6.99) which includes half a sandwich, a side and a cup of soup.

IMG_1096

The Turkey Rueben I ordered on wheat bread came piled high with sauerkraut (my favorite,) and was oozing with swiss cheese.

IMG_1092

The Thousand Island dressing that’s usually dripping from traditional Rueben sandwiches was replaced by zippy, organic stone ground mustard. Great swap.

IMG_1097

I chose fresh fruit for my side, which came with a surprise cup of sweet & fluffy fruit dip. Ummm, awesome! I think it was cream cheese-based, and I scraped the bowl clean with my finger. :)

IMG_1102

A steamy cup of Broccoli Cheese Soup made the meal. It was thick, cheesy, and had big hunks of soft broccoli in it. Looooved this!

IMG_1101

Ben got 1/4 of a Ham & Salami Muffaletta.

IMG_1093

This thing was HUGE (I can’t even imagine how many people the full sized sandwich would feed!) and so. freaking. delicious. Dare I say, better than anything we had in New Orleans?!

IMG_1094

Jason’s Deli = 2 thumbs up. Good prices and fresh, healthy food. Irrational thoughts regarding normal restaurant names be gone. ;)

Since we’ve got a long weekend ahead to catch up, I decided to play hooky from laundry, chores and tidying up the house after lunch, and hit the mall for a little Memorial Day sale shopping instead!

Gap, Ann Taylor Loft, Old Navy and Banana Republic are running some great deals, and some of my favorite finds include this soft, pink blouse from the Gap,

top

and this silky, flowy tank top from Ann Taylor Loft. Ok this was actually full price, and probably the only thing in the store that wasn’t on sale, but it was too cute to pass up. C’est La Vie!

tanktop

Feeling the need for a boost of energy after hustling from store to store with purchases in tow, I snagged a Light Caramel Frappuccino from Starbucks on my way out of the mall.

IMG_1123

I used to try and convince myself that frappuccinos were a waste of money because they’re mostly air and ice, and cost more than a latte, but they are clearly worth it. Creamy, cool, sweet and so much fun to drink.

IMG_1120

Plus I’m obsessed with the caramel drizzle on top.

IMG_1121

It’s love!

IMG_1119

What’s your frappuccino order?

IMG_1124

While checking the mail after returning home, I was absolutely delighted to find a special delivery inside my mailbox…

Sprinkle & Spice cupcakes! :D

DSC_0003

My brother went to a party that was catered by Sprinkle & Spice the other day and loved them so much that he snagged some for me, the cupcake connoisseur, to try too. Soooomeone’s throwing their hat in the ring for brother of the year award! ;)

DSC_0007

Sprinkle & Spice uses ingredients like eggs, butter and milk from local farmers and vendors, and even gives you the option to "build your own" cupcakes by choosing the cake and icing flavor, then picking out the "sparkle" on top.

I had no idea where to start, so after a thoughtful taste of each icing swirl, I decided to go with…

DSC_0019

The Pink One. Of course I did! I love all things pink, and those cute little pearly sparkles on top totally melted my heart. :)

Dense vanilla cake on bottom and sweet, almond-flavored icing on top.

Devoured in seconds. Thanks bro!

Now for the real question – how many cupcakes is too many cupcakes to eat in one day? I guess we’ll find out soon enough, muwahahaha! ;)

Have a GREAT long weekend, be safe and enjoy your time off!

What are your Memorial Day weekend plans?

I think a trip to the Farmer’s Market is definitely in order (my first trip this season!) seeing The Hangover 2 at some point, then a family BBQ with my fam on Monday! :D

I’m heading down south to Portland to visit my college roommate and do some camping! I’m super excited to get out of the city even though the weather isn’t supposed to be nice.

I also love carmel frappacinos, as well as carmel lattes – it’s so rich and buttery!

Jason’s Deli looks fantastic! I often stay away from sandwich shops too for that same reason, but every so often, you come across a little jem of a sandwich shop. :)

You have to try the Club Royale on Croissant! Also, they have great Roasted Red Pepper Hummus on the salad bar! It’s definitely one of my favorite spots mainly because of the ice cream and gingerbread muffins. Now I’m hungry!

I’m not a huge fan of cold sandwiches either. I’ll eat them — but only if I don’t have another choice. Give me something toasted or heated any day.

Also, I want a surprise cupcake delivery. My brother would never think of that.

Those were my exact same plans for this weekend but the rain kept me from the Farmer’s Market. Boo…maybe next weekend. Hangover 2 was selling out at Jordan Creek last night so go early. FYI — if you go to a 4-oclock movie time at Wynnsong…it’s only $5.

First time at Jason’s Deli, Wow! When I found out I was moving to Des Moines, it is one of the first things I looked up to see if there was one here. P.S. The spinach-veggie wrap might be my favorite sandwich ever.
