I’m Obsessed

Happy Memorial Day! :D

DSC_0018

While a hot wind is whipping and temps are soaring well above 90, at least. it’s not. raining. Yesss! I was beginning to think we’d never see the sun again!

DSC_0017

I got my day started with a bowl of cereal and milk so I wasn’t starving by the time we arrived at my parent’s house for an afternoon, Memorial Day grill out.

DSC_0001

Total Raisin Bran and unsweetened vanilla almond breeze. I’m kind of obsessed…

DSC_0002

Total gives you 100% DV of a number of different vitamins & minerals,

and unsweetened vanilla almond breeze is just the cherry on top.

DSC_0005

It never ceases to amaze me how ridiculously yummy it is over cereal. It’s cray-cray!

DSC_0003

Ben and I made the entire 2 minute drive over to my folks’ place around 11, and were greeted with Hot Pepper Jelly Dip with chips to chomp on for appetizers.

DSC_0023

This recipe is from my Father-in-Law and we all just LOVE it. All you do is mix half a jar of hot pepper jelly (we like Dickinson’s) with 4oz each of cream cheese and sour cream.

DSC_0025

The result is a creamy, sweet and, actually not spicy at all, dip. It’s very addicting but is luckily one of those dips that’s just as good with veggies as it is with chips, unlike salsa or something. (Don’t you hate it when magazines tell you to dip veggies in salsa to save calories? It tastes like nothing!)

Anyways, we fired up the grill soon after and put Ben, the grill master, to work. Steaks were on tap which as you know are his specialty.

DSC_0007

Look at that form and level of concentration! ;)

DSC_0020

It was hot, but not too hot to sit outside and enjoy our lunch under the shade of an umbrella – although I think we would’ve sat outside even if it were 100 degrees. The rain has kept us cooped up for too long!

DSC_0041

I piled my plate with Grandpa’s Pasta Salad, corn on the cob,

DSC_0035 DSC_0036

grilled sirloin steak, which my Mom had marinated for 6 hours in oil, vinegar, a diced onion, salt, pepper and garlic powder (holy cow it was tender and GOOD,)

DSC_0038

and fresh watermelon slices. Ahhhh slices – my favorite way to enjoy watermelon!

DSC_0037

omg which reminds me – when we were in DC last week we pulled up next to a car with a woman in the passenger seat whose entire FACE was buried in a giant wheel of watermelon! It was kiiiind of hysterical!

The meal was light and summery – a perfect kickoff to the season. 8) Finn thought so too!

DSC_0030

Ok back to eating. ;)

DSC_0032

I was stuffed, but had saved a tiny pocket in my stomach for a hunk of warm brownie served with a spoonful of vanilla ice cream, and drizzled with luscious caramel sauce. Talk about obsessions!! :D

DSC_0043

Happy Memorial Day from us to you! :D

DSC_0048

We’re still feeling the spirit of spending the day outside, so Ben and I are venturing out for a loooong walk. Both of us need the exercise and all this free time comes to a screeching halt when it’s back to the grind tomorrow! Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!

  1. Yum! Everything looks great, especially that dip! Happy Memorial day! :)

  2. Anita 05.30.2011

Oh my gosh watermelon is my favorite! Seems like it’s going to be a lovely Memorial Day! Enjoy! :)

  3. I’m currently obsessed with Kashi’s Honey Grahams…reminds me of the very unhealthy Captain Crunch version I loved as a kid:)

  4. I am obsessed with Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal, and I also love Fibre One (the Raisin Bran variety). I actually eat cereal more often as a snack, especially late night, than breakfast!

  5. That dip sounds wonderful (and easy!). Looks like you had a great day – enjoy the rest of it. :)

  6. I love almond milk, too! It’s the closest in taste to cow’s milk for those of us who are lactose intolerant in my opinion. I’ve been eating grape nuts for breakfast lately–they are insanely filling!

  7. Michelle 05.30.2011

I just came back from the U.S. so I have every single box of Chex that is available. We love Chex and Canada is finally getting it in July! I also have a box of Peanut Butter Cap N’ Crunch, Cheerios, Special K (Strawberries and Honey & Oat), granola.

  8. Emily 05.30.2011

Your nephew is so cute! I love his reddish hair. :)

I am the only one who eats cereal in my house, and I’m trying to avoid the preservatives and sugar/corn syrup in most cereals…so right now, we have Nature’s Path flax flakes and Grapenuts…booring!

  9. You are the only person I know with the skills to make corn chips look gourmet…

    WHat a talent you are!

  10. Beth Havey 05.30.2011

Love all the photos–looks fantastic. Love your cereal obsession. Mine is with GrapeNuts. I eat a bowl almost every night before bed and I pile it with raisins or dried cherries and pour on the milk. Happy Memorial Day, Beth

  11. Jenna 05.30.2011

I looooooove Great Value’s Crunchy Raisin Bran Cereal. Much better than the name brand, in my opinion!! Check it out! :)

  12. Machelle 05.30.2011

Honey Bunches of Oates w/Almonds. i like to toss in a few fresh blueberries.

  13. Melissa 05.30.2011

What a fun day with your fam! Strangely, I don’t think I have any cereal on hand right now! Totally crazy!

    Enjoy your night!

  14. I don’t currently have any cereal in my pantry (and hardly ever buy it) but I do love Honey Bunches of Oats with cold milk! Something about cereal is not appealing to me in the morning for breakfast but I do like it as a snack :)

  15. Mmm…I can just imagine the taste of raisin bran. Good stuff. Hot pepper jelly dip too. We were happy to see just a few hrs of sun here and get some 60 deg temps. My current cereal is: Kashi Autumn Wheat, but I’ve also been having a lot of hot and cold oats and Love Grown Foods granola with yogurt, fruit, etc. So good. I eat it by the handful for dessert sometimes.

  16. we have some honey nut chex & fiber one in our pantry now…i loooove cereal and milk, especially in the summertime!

  17. Mac 05.30.2011

I actually rarely eat cereal, probably because my favorite kinds are Lucky Charms and Golden Grahams lol

  18. Jill 05.30.2011

I LOVE cereal. I eat it every day. Sometimes twice! I have Honey Nut Cheerios, Kashi Island Vanilla, Strawberry Shredded Wheat, Cinnamon Graham Honeycomb, and regular shredded wheat.

  19. Jen 05.30.2011

It was such an awesome day – minus the wind! ;-) I always have cereal on hand…at the moment Kashi Heart to Heart (2 boxes) and TJ’s Pom & Blueberry Flakes. And on a side note, super inspired by you and purchased a donut pan this weekend! YAY! Cannot wait to try it out.

  20. Jane 05.30.2011

I go on cereal kicks once in a while. Right now it’s between Grape Nuts and Honey Nut Cheerios. We also love Honey Bunches of Oats/w almonds. But the kinds I really love and never buy because they’re crappy for you are my childhood faves–Lucky Charms and Cocoa Puffs! My husband loves the PB Captain Crunch :D

  21. Yum. I just had a big watermelon too! Right now I only have Frosted Mini Wheats in my pantry!

  22. Abbey 05.30.2011

Trader Joe’s own brand of high fiber cereal is the best! Just slightly sweet and tastes great on it’s own or with yogurt and fruit.

  23. Angie 05.30.2011

I love Honey Nut Clusters with sweetened almond breeze. So wish I would have tried the unsweetened first, but unfortunately no, now there is no comparison and I have to go with the sweetened!

  24. Ms.S 05.30.2011

That dip looks scrumptious! Currently, I have frosted mini spooners and Kashi Go-Lean high protein crunch in my cereal stash – both of them taste wonderful with strawberries or raspberries on top. :) Best way to start the day!

  25. I’ve been going through a lot of that exact almond milk with Barbara’s Multigrain Shredded Spoonfuls & homemade granola – yum!

  26. We are out of cereal at the moment, looks as though I need to remedy that situation. I am also going to try almond milk, I can no longer drink cow’s milk, but haven’t found an alternative I really like, will have to give it a try for sure!!

  27. Carrie 05.31.2011

I LOVE that you wrote cray cray in this post!!!! Made my day :)

  28. Daisy 05.31.2011

Cheerio’s, Rice Krispies, and Rasin Bran always have a spot in my pantry!

  29. Yum, that cereal bowl, while simple, looks delicious! For precisely that reason, I can’t really keep cereal in the ol’ pantry. If I could have cereal in my pantry right now (without eating the entire box), I’d have some Honey Nut Cheerios YUMMY! Right now, I just have quick oats, which I have been making lots of Oats in a Jar with.

  30. lauramich 05.31.2011

I promise that Kashi is not paying me to post this, but the cold cereals in my cupboard right now are Kashi GoLean and Kashi Heart to Heart Warm Cinnamon Oat. The GoLean is my summer staple, eaten with plain yogurt (seems more stick-to-the-ribs than cereal + milk) plus fruit (this morning, a mix of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries) and almonds.

The Heart to Heart was an impulse purchase—they say don’t shop when you’re hungry! :D A good snacking cereal, a bit too sweet for regular eating. I sometimes keep Cheerios around for snacking, too, mixed with dried fruit and nuts for a quasi trail mix.

Oh, there’s also homemade granola, but that’s Teh Husband’s staple, not mine. I’ll occasionally steal a spoonful, though.

  31. Lena 05.31.2011

Are those flowers daisies? they are so beautiful! you really managed to capture the very essence of their beauty! :)))

    • Iowa Girl Eats 05.31.2011

Yep – they are! From my parent’s garden :)

      • Lena 05.31.2011

wow! they are lovely!!! we don’t get lovely flowers like these here! :) thanks for the sharing :)

  32. Currently have zero cereal in my house. We’re an oatmeal household.

I’ve been eating watermelon like a mad-woman though!
