Cheesy, garlicky pillow of squishy bread nirvana with cheddar pockets

Today seriously ranks up there in terms of most delicious days ever. I know some people say that casually but, dangit, I really mean it! ;)

It all started this morning at the market. The Farmers’ Market!

It is oppressively hot in the Midwest right now – you can practically cut the humidity with a knife – but my Mom and I haven’t been in a few weeks and no amount of heat or humidity was going to keep us away.

We figured we’d beat the uncomfortable combo, and hopefully the crowds, by arriving at 7:45am. Unfortunately it seems everyone in the city had the same idea – it was crayzee crowded!

IMG_0193

After squeezing through the packed streets, picking up our fair share of produce, and working up quite the sweat (seriously why did I even bother doing my hair and makeup?!) we were ready for a cool treat.

Fresh squeezed OJ totally hit the spot! Refreshing to the max and, like my Mom pointed out, tasted just like we had stuck a straw in an orange (which does not work, btw…)

IMG_0197

We grabbed our cup of fresh squeezed goodness, and headed over to our final destination at the market. Say it with me…

The Pupusa Tent!

One massively-large, piping-hot spinach & cheese pupusa, topped with crunchy slaw and mild sauce.

This was an audibly yelling "MMMMMMMMM!!!!!" through closed teeth, kind of meal. The kind that’s so good it makes you want to swear a little, you know?! Maybe not… ;)

It was also arguably the largest pupusa ever created, and the very. first. one. we have ever failed to finish. Slightly devastating.

Alas, we gave it our all and went out in a blaze of chewy, cheesy glory. :D

After the market we made a pit stop at the grocery store to get more produce.

I know. I bet you’re wondering WHYYYYYY we would go to the grocery store after a perfectly good trip to the Farmers’ Market? Well, 2 reasons.

1. The grocery store we went to has local sweet corn that’s $2 cheaper than anywhere at the Farmer’s Market AND you can shuck it right in the store (I HATE shucking at home!)

2. There’s really no local fruit at the market (yet, anyways) and I wanted to stock up on some juicin’ fruit! :D

Here’s my combined haul!!!! More on this in a minute. :)

My Mom and I dropped the goods off at my house before heading back out and to the mall. It’s kind of an unwritten rule that pedicures have to occur at some point during a girl’s weekend, which is where were headed next.

I love Venetian Nails inside Jordan Creek Mall. My bridesmaids and I had our nails/toes done there for my wedding and they always do such a great job.

We’re talking a minimum of a 20 minute foot/calf rub with scrub then lotion, and a meticulous paint job. Plus their chairs are the best I’ve ever been in at a nail salon. Superb in every way!

DSC_0029

We also made a pit stop at Ann Taylor Loft where I stocked up on some basic tanks & tees.

DSC_0016

I go through these phases where I’m like, Cardigans! I need millions and millions of cardigans in every style and color! Then I find myself with a closet full of cardigans and nothing to wear under them.

DSC_0026

These babies will solve my problem nicely. :)

 DSC_0019 DSC_0024

The tanks were only $5 each, PLUS I had a birthday coupon for $15 off my total order, so it was a win-win situ.

DSC_0022 DSC_0023

So was the juice I made when I got home – Carrot-Orange-Apple-Beet Juice!

DSC_0034

I nearly couldn’t drink it, it was so beautiful. I just kind of stared for awhile…

DSC_0056

Right?!

DSC_0054

We’ve got a layer of organic Pink Lady Apple, followed by an organic beet layer, then a carrot layer (FYI – I did not juice the carrot top greens as they can be mildly toxic to some people and, long story short, although the sign at the stall where I bought them said organic, I later wondered if they really were and didn’t want to drink the tops where the most pesticides/chemicals would be!) then finally a layer of orange!

DSC_0057

After my gaze sesh, I dropped in a few ice cubes, stirred that sucker up…

DSC_0063

and giggled. :)

DSC_0065

This is the pinkest, girliest looking juice EVER. Squeal!

DSC_0069

The taste about blew my socks flip-flops off. Ridiculous. I chugged it. I know. I couldn’t help it though! I tried to sip and savor, but it was toooo gooood.

DSC_0070

It still had time to turn my lips pink though. Beets = nature’s lipstick. :)

DSC_0080

(ps I can finally fit my hair into a baby pony – whee!)

DSC_0078

A little while later I bit into – legit – the best thing I ever ate.

DSC_0086

A Garlic Cheddar Bun from Great Harvest.

DSC_0087

Think cheesy, garlicky pillow of squishy bread nirvana.

DSC_0090

With cheese pockets. With cheese pockets.

I want to eat one of these everyday for the rest of my life. There – I said it!

DSC_0092

So what’d I tell you?

Fresh squeezed OJ + Pupusa + girly juice + Garlic Cheese Bun = 1 undeniably delicious (and fun!) day. I want more of all, please and thank you.

In other news, last night I watched Life As We Know It, and it was awesome! I’m not a chick-flick gal, so I don’t know what made me pick it up, but I’m glad I did. Less CF than I thought, funny, cute and an all around good time.

Tonight I’m popping in Hall Pass. I’m sort of obsessed with Jason Sudeikis. He’s kind of a tool in interviews, but I think his movies are hilarious. Plus Jenna Fisher’s in it and I think she’s great. :)

Perhaps accompanied by a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon. My friend’s brother works for a large wine company in Northern Cali (jealous) and sent me a few bottles of wine to try. Umm, twist my arm! ;)

I’ll let you know what I think tomorrow.

Have a wonderful, delicious rest of your day!

Next time I’m in Des Moines I’ve got to check out that farmers market. May not be until next summer, but still. I doubt it’s open when I’m in Iowa for fryfest and the first IOWA game.

Strange, but true: I’ve NEVER purchased sweet corn. I have a great reason though: many of my family members are farmers and have their own sweet corn. In fact, we always have ‘too much’ and end up bagging sweet corn for the winter months. In other words, I’ve never have frozen (from the store) corn because of this!
