New (To Me) Product Alert!

56

First a quick skin-care back-story:

High School/College: As I once told you, I had the best skin growing up. I hardly ever washed my face at night (I know) and rarely got a blemish.

Mid-20’s: Adult acne arrives with a vengeance. My once-perfect skin suddenly turns on me, becoming unbearably itchy and regularly breaking out.

Last spring: I received the best piece of skin care advice I ever received, found my skin care dream team and – Hallelujah! – my skin finally started to clear up!

Last winter: With my breakouts under control, I faced a new problem: SHINE. I didn’t matter how little or what kind of moisturizer I used, you could literally fix a squeaky hinge with the collective grease from my T-zone (sorry).

Today: I tried out a product my Mom recently bought and swears by: Laura Mercier Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder – Shine Control

powder

From the Sephora website:

What it is: A pressed powder that visibly eliminates shine and controls oil breakthrough to maintain a fresh, matte finish with the naturally derived Shine Control Complex.

What it does: Laura Mercier Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder – Shine Control is a lightweight, oil-free powder that visibly eliminates shine and produces a fresh, matte complexion. The naturally derived Shine Control Complex controls oil breakthrough and the ultra-sheer, mint green shade works to correct redness and visibly even out the skintone. It’s ideal for touch-ups throughout the day as it keeps your complexion flawless and shine-free.

What it is formulated WITHOUT: Parabens

What else you need to know: This product is free of fragrances and talc.

Basically I dusted the sheer powder over my powder/bronzer/blush this morning and went about my day, which included going in and out of the humid weather multi times (the perfect recipe for glistening skin.)

Here’s my skin after 10 hours of work.

DSC_0004_1

Pretty much shine free. AMAZING!

DSC_0010

I was shocked! Honest to God, I haven’t seen my face this matte after any amount of activity in years.

DSC_0008

I am totally going to the mall to snatch up a compact of my own ASAP.

DSC_0021

Just thought I’d share. :) If it worked for me – maybe it could work for you! And if it doesn’t, Sephora has a great return policy. ;) (PS I love my new clock necklace. $2.80 from Forever 21!!)

DSC_0011_1

In other news, I cooked up a fast, fresh salmon feast for dinner tonight.

DSC_0073

It was ready in 30 minutes and there were 2 dishes to clean at the end. Win!

DSC_0084

I started with a big, beautiful filet of fresh, wild sockeye salmon I picked up at Costco. I’m tellin’ ya – their salmon is really great!

DSC_0022

I seasoned the filet with 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil, and a generous sprinkling of salt & pepper

DSC_0029

Next I thinly sliced up 1 lemon,

DSC_0028

and tiled it down the salmon.

DSC_0036

Fresh. :)

DSC_0038

Finally, I took a cue from The Pioneer Woman and placed the salmon into a cold oven, set it to 400 degrees, then let it cook for 25 minutes exactly.

DSC_0063

Perfect!

DSC_0069

The fish was tender and flaky, but really moist.

DSC_0091

An extra squeeze of fresh lemon juice on top really made the flavors PoP.

DSC_0095

I made a quick pilaf to serve on the side while the salmon was cooking.

DSC_0074

Trader Joe’s Rice Orzo Pilaf Mix.

DSC_0045

This was super easy. Just melt 1 Tablespoon butter, then toast the rice/orzo until the grains turn golden brown.

DSC_0053 DSC_0056

Add the accompanying spice packet and 2 cups of water, then cook until tender.

DSC_0061

Delish! :D

DSC_0075

I usually cut the big salmon filets into 5-6 individual servings, and freeze the extras, but I was so inspired by the fresh lemon and olive oil flavors that I decided to cook the entire filet and use the leftovers to top some lunch salads this week. Yummy. :)

DSC_0081

For SURE, feel good food! :)

DSC_0100

I’m feeling light and bouncy this evening, so Ben and I are off for an evening walk.

Have a great night!

I don’t go anywhere without my cherry chapstick!
Did you see that The Pioneer Woman is getting her own show on the food network? Should be good!

I know I am SOOOO excited! I saw the commercial the other day and freaked!

  2. Must try that shine control stuff! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Fresh branch Lip Sugar… best chapstick/lip balm EVER…. and way better than the La Mer kind!

  3. Eleni 08.17.2011

I became a Mary Kay consultant last year and their products are the BOMB. I love their Timewise cleanser, moisturizer, and microdermabrasion set. I’m only 21, but it’s never too early to start an anti-aging regimen and my skin feels great.

  4. Melissa 08.17.2011

Ah! I saw that salmon recipe too, and thought, “Oh, here’s my ticket to regular salmon dinners!” I’m so glad it actually worked out so well. Thanks for sharing that!

My skin secret is Cetaphil Restoraderm products. It’s a particular line of Cetaphil products and they are kind of amazing. Sometimes I get little psoriasis spots, and my dermatologist just said to use this body wash and lotion and I can’t believe how well they work. I need almost no medicine at all. I have really dry and sensitive skin, and it never stings and always moisturizes.

I don’t like their sunscreen face lotion, though. I wish I could find a great facial lotion with high sunscreen that doesn’t sting or feel thick and greasy. I’ve been through so many and hated them all and don’t use anything now. That’s bad!

    • Amanda 08.17.2011

I am a beautiControl consultant, and we have things called skin sensors that will determine what kind of skin regimen works best for your skin. I absolutely recommend using this product- my skin has remained clear, and shine free. Plus the makeup stays on all day!! It is 100% guaranteed

  5. Ahhhh I need that shine stuff!!! I am a supershiney girl, aka that stuff will be my favee

  6. Allyson Jo 08.17.2011

I worked for youthful essence & meaningful beauty for a few years, so my favorite skin care products are the daily moisturizer from the youthful essence, then the rest I go to meaningful beauty-I love love love that skin care line. :)

  7. I’m completely obsessed with Origins Silk Screen powder. :) I actually blogged about it the other day. Silk Screen is the perfect name for it–it makes my skin silky, no shine, and just makes little flaws disappear. I’m usually pretty “whatever” about the brand/kinds of makeup I buy, but this one is really awesome!

  8. ElizabethMD 08.17.2011

I am *SO* trying this powder! Thank you, Kristen!

    • FUNwithaK 08.17.2011

Meeeee tooooo! I have such a super oily face by the end of the work day. Hate looking at my face in the harsh lighting in the bathrooms at work too. Yuck.

  9. Thanks for the skincare tip! I have adult acne issues and shiny skin! I use Murad Mattifying lotion in the morning but the powder would be a great addition!

  10. Ali 08.17.2011

What product did you use to clear up your face because I’m now 26 and started getting zits in the past few years and I want them to go away!

    • Iowa Girl Eats 08.17.2011

If you click on the link in the beginning of the post – there is all the info in the post it links to! :)

  11. erica 08.17.2011

my skincare weapon: Clarisonic!!! it’s done amazing things for me, but even more amazing things for my boyfriend. i love it so much, i think it’s totally worth the investment!!!

  12. ktlovespie 08.17.2011

Sadly I’m still trying to find my secret to great skin. I (currently) don’t wash my face with anything but water (gasp) because every face wash I’ve tried dries my face out too much and they my normally oily skin goes into overdrive to compensate. I wish I could find a natural solution because I hate the idea of using chemicals on my face (which is what is in a lot of face washes and body products)

On the other “hand” haha, my hands are great because I’ve been using a friends natural homemade soap to wash with instead of store bought. My hands are so soft I don’t even need lotion.

  13. Shannon 08.17.2011

Revlon Color Stay eyeshadow….it really does last for 12 hours!

  14. Emily 08.17.2011

blaaaaaaah, we have such the same skin. Unfortunately I haven’t found any gems yet, so I’ll definitely give this a try! I’m so sick of going through endless packages of the oil absorbing pads–gross!

  15. Kali 08.17.2011

Thank you for sharing- can’t wait to try the powder! I am currently addicted to those shine control blotting sheets by Neutrogena- they actually work well, but the powder sounds awesome!.

  16. Absolutely love that necklace!

  17. We have a similar skin history. I face very shiny skin at the end of my work day too, so I am grateful for your recommendation! Going to Sephora’s website now to add it to my list of things to buy.

  18. karen 08.17.2011

The Body Shop’s Tea Tree line is wonderful and will clean and clear without drying you out

    • Jillian 08.17.2011

I concur!! I also bought just straight tea tree oil from walmart for spot treatments because The Body Shop’s blemish gel runs out so fast and I don’t have one anywhere remotely close. The smell takes some getting used to but it works!

  19. Stacey @starpulp 08.17.2011

Sigh! Seriously looks amazing! What in the world was that whole “shine” craze about years ago?? That only looks good on a runway model!

  20. Sarah 08.17.2011

Thank you thank you thank you so much for this post. Suddenly in the past month or two my skin has gone CRAZY. And I did what you did, try to dry out my oily skin. I’ve been skipping the moisturizer, bad idea! Tonight, I washed my faced and followed with my trusty oil of olay! Honestly, my skin already feels better.

    Adult acne SUCKS!

Oh yea, that salmon looks amazing. Cooking fish scares me but I think I could do that easy peasy! :o)

  21. Ashley 08.17.2011

*The salmon looks to die for! Will have to try it soon!
*I just started using Cetaphil a few months ago. I bought a big jar of the moisturizing cream and I love it! My face is so sensitive, and I can actually use this every day without irritation. Love it!
*Thank-you for blogging about Pinterest. I am hooked!

  22. I’m a huge fan of the Origins skin care line. I don’t use the entire line, but the moisturizers alone are fantastic!! I still get a random blemish around my TOM, but I blame that on the ‘mones’.

I love Costco Salmon!! love, love love!

  23. maureen 08.17.2011

How do you combat the fish smell problem when cooking it in the house? I never make it inside because I don’t want my house to stink but I’d really like to be able to make it indoors instead of always having to use the grill. Tips?

    • Iowa Girl Eats 08.18.2011

I find cooking it in the oven reduces the smell a TON! Otherwise, I keep the back, kitchen door leading to our patio open to help get the smell out of the house.

  24. Dream Mom 08.17.2011

Amazing pics-that product looks like it works great!

For skincare, I keep it simple. I use Cetaphil cleanser for oily skin and for moisturizer and anti-aging I use organic, virgin coconut oil (Now Foods brand). It works great and my skin looks and feels great plus it gets rid of and keeps fine lines away like nothing else I’ve ever tried.

  25. Charis 08.18.2011

The salmon looks sooo tender and yummy!
and i want that clock necklace!very cute :)

  26. Isabel 08.18.2011

    Hi Kristen!

I was wondering if you wear any kind of sunscreen? Also, do you wear foundation and/or concealer?

    • Iowa Girl Eats 08.18.2011

Eek, right now I do not. I know I *really* should! I use Mary Kay concealer. I have terribly dark circles under my eyes (it’s hereditary) and MK works wonders!

  27. Jenny 08.18.2011

I actually used to be a die hard Bare Escentuals junkie, but about 2 years ago I converted to the Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer and I have never looked back. The BE was great in the summer but the frigid ‘Sconnie winters dry my face out something fierce and it was like washing my face with sandpaper and then expecting my foundation to go on smooth. The LM keeps me VERY moisturized all day long, and it doesn’t feel like you are wearing makeup. I have been looking for something to keep the shine away for more than a few hours, and I apparently never had to look farther than the LM line. Thanks for the post! I am headed to Sephora after work today to snag myself some shine control powder.

  28. Ashley 08.18.2011

I’m super shiny too and have fallen in love with Urban Decay’s De-slick in a Tube, found at Sephora. It is a gel that you can apply under your makeup or even on top of it and will not smudge it up. It keeps me shine-free even AFTER I’ve washed it off. LOVE IT! :)

  29. Amy 08.18.2011

I use Cetaphil to wash my face every night, and I can’t live without my Avon Glimmersticks eyeliner!

  30. I am so shiny by the end of the day – I’ll have to try this!

  31. Sarah W. 08.18.2011

I’ve used Mary Kay since I started wearing makeup.
Microdermabrasion is probably my very favorite; their mineral foundation is also up there. Their day solution is a great multifunction product, sunscreen… anti-aging…moisturizing it’s tough to beat. I loved it so much I became a consultant 5 yrs ago and love sharing about Mary Kay till this day. If any of you have questions about it just click on my link.

Side note…That is a huge salmon! I have to say, I’m a little jealous of your necklace.

  32. jane 08.18.2011

LOVE laura mercier products! we have costco salmon in my house at least once a week-it really is so yummy!!

  33. I’ve 23 and have always had good skin so I hope I don’t get adult acne! And I’m ALWAYS looking for simple salmon recipes so this is perfect!

  34. Kelly 08.18.2011

Laura Mercier makes great foundation too!

  35. Marin 08.18.2011

I have a few makeup/skin care products that I compeletly SWEAR BY. I mean, I could not live without these! I’ve basically tried every product out there to boot.
    1. Tarina Tarantino Tinted Pearl Glow Primer- face primer you can wear even without makeup… It’s amazing!
    2. Lac-hydrin Five moisturizer- a tad expensive but keeps me smooth and blemish free
    3. Dior DiorShow Mascara- Hands down most amazing mascara I have EVER used.
    4. Urban Decay All Nighter makeup setting spray- Perfect for nights spent dancing and partying when you don’t want to worry about your makeup!

  36. Emily 08.18.2011

I’m with you with the Covergirl mascara – best in the world!!!

And that salmon just looks deeelicious!!!!!!!!!

  37. Thank you So much for posting about that powder. I will definitely be getting that!

  38. I really appreciate your posts about some of your skin care woes and how you solved them. I’m glad you touched this subject because it is a very sensitive topic for many people and I don’t think it is addressed enough!

My beauty secret is sunscreen! I will not leave the house without it on. I love Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream. It acts as a sunscreen (SPF42), moisturizer, and primer all in one!

  39. I love Clinique’s Pore Minimizer t-shine control gel. (I don’t have the tube in front of me, so I’m not sure of the exact name. But it looks like they don’t make the product anymore though.)

I have also faithfully used Clean and Clear’s moisture-absorbing sheets for shine control.

  40. LizAshlee 08.18.2011

You look absolutely GORGEOUS in the photos!! Beautiful skin…will have to debut this on my weekend winks this weekend!

    Food looks amazing as well!

    Have a great day!

  41. Jessica 08.18.2011

I am in the same boat with the oily skin! I have had it since I was a teenager, my mother is the exact same way! (However, i hope oily skin now means less wrinkles in my future) I will have to try that Laura Mercier powder for the shine control!!

  42. Lauren 08.18.2011

Definitely DIOR Show mascara, its the best product i’ve EVER purchased. Totally worth the $$$

  43. Emilie 08.18.2011

Your salmon is so pretty…and so are you! Love the bright lemon and review of the shine product. Laura Mercier really knows her stuff!

  44. Allison 08.19.2011

I’ve been using the Laura Mercier product line since high school and could not be happier! I had bad acne throughout high school from playing sports and this is the one line that feels light and doesn’t clog my pores- bingo! Also, I use the Mario Badescu line for cleaning, it does wonders! [http://www.mariobadescu.com/]

  45. Lesley 08.19.2011

That dinner looks like it was delicious. I LOVE pairing cherry tomatoes with rice. Tasty.

I am in love with Korres wild rose 24 hr moisturizer, Neutrogena UltraSheer liquid spf 55 for face, L’oreal telescopic mascara, and my shu uemura eyelash curler!
