One of the things I liked best about my time spent in Japan in college was traveling through the breathtakingly beautiful countryside and mountain villages that seemed frozen in time.
The Shirakawa-go region in the Shogawa River Valley, pictured above, is famous for their traditional farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. Called gassho-zujuri, these homes are built to withstand large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region in the winter, and the sloping roofs provide a large attic space for cultivating silkworms. What a beautiful picture! I’ve never heard of this region so I definitely learned something day.
I just wanted to comment to say I’ve been really enjoying the Daily Escapes! I originally subscribed to your blog because I loved all your travel recaps (and may have spent too much time browsing past posts once I discovered them all…) so I like that you’re bringing the travel aspect into your blog, even if you’re not necessarily going on trips. I hope you keep this feature going!
Just poppin’ in to wish you a very happy birthday, Kristin! Hope your day is as special as you are!
SO beautiful! You must have had amazing experiences in Japan. I’ve only been once and would like to go back. I’m a new follower to your blog and love these Daily Escapes you include.
