The 4th of July is my favorite foodie holiday of the year. Here’s 15+ family favorite 4th of July recipes!
Shhh, don’t tell Thanksgiving, but the 4th of July is not-so-secretly my favorite foodie holiday of the year. Where Thanksgiving feels limited to green beans, mashed potatoes, turkey, and gravy, there’s no limit to the food you can serve on summer’s most festive and delicious holiday!
Besides the food, the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays, period. What can I say, nothing brings out the kid in you like gazing at fireworks on the capital lawn (Dad’s Killer Beergaritas not-optional – for the adults, of course!) catching candy from the fire truck at the town parade (oh hey, tootsie rolls!) smelling the lingering smoke from a pile of just spent sparklers (ok fumes,) tucking tiny flags into your flower pots (and having them uprooted by the pesky family of squinnies living under the front porch!)…I could go on forever!
But really though – DAT FOOD. I say the Thanksgiving meals feels limited but the truth is my family’s 4th of July spread doesn’t change a whole lot from year to year. What can I say, we’re creatures of delicious habit and the food we usually load our plates up with on the 4th doesn’t really need messing with.
That said, my yearly 4th of July recipe roundup is one I truly get excited to share. This list contains dishes that are so good my family’s been making them for decades, but is sprinkled with new favorites I’ve created for the blog that have quickly become tradition. Hopefully you can find one or more to incorporate into your happy holiday weekend (which, three cheers for a Saturday holiday, amiright?!)
Wherever you are and whatever you do, have a safe, happy, and delicious fourth next weekend!
MOJITO FRUIT SALAD
Mojito Fruit Salad has become my go-to fruit salad for any and all occasions where we’ll be grilling out, attending a party, or just need something fresh and fabulous to eat. It’s a feast for the eyes and has that tart + mint flavor combo that I love in my mojitos.
JUDY’S BAKED BEANS
If you don’t believe me when I say Judy’s Baked Beans are the best ever, just check out the comments section in the post. I have yet to receive a message from someone who made it that isn’t just glowing. They are ah-mazing and come from a decades-old church cookbook. Nobody even knows who Judy is!
MOM’S CLASSIC POTATO SALAD
I’m sharing my Dad’s killer recipe below but first here’s my Mom’s! Her Classic Potato Salad is fresh, light, and has zero mixins. I don’t know about you but I just can’t get into potato salads that have lots of mysterious crunch. What is that? Onion? Celery? Nah. I like my potato salad straight up!
BEST-EVER SOUTHWESTERN BEAN DIP
I’ve been making Best-Ever Southwestern Bean Dip since high-school. It’s a friend’s Mom’s recipe and is completely addicting. Which is ok because it’s packed with vegetables and black beans. Dig in!
GRILLED SWEET CORN WITH CHILI-LIME HONEY BUTTER
Just when I thought sweet corn couldn’t get any better I added chili-lime honey butter, a spritz of lime juice, and a sprinkling of salt. Now THAT is good ear of corn! I created this recipe after a produce stocker at my old grocery store recommended the combo and have never looked back.
EASY BAKED RIBS
Although Ben smokes a mean rack of ribs, I realize not everybody has a 300lb meat smoker hanging out in their garage! Easy Baked Ribs are fall off the bone tender, finger-lickin’ good, and baked in the oven. I’ve been making them for years and have never met a person who doesn’t absolutely love them.
MARINATED GRILLED CHICKEN WITH CUCUMBER-WATERMELON-SALSA
Marinated Grilled Chicken with Cucumber-Watermelon Salsa is a great dish to serve at a 4th of July grill out because you can marinate the chicken ahead of time, slap it on the grill, then let guests top their chicken with as much or little cucumber-watermelon salsa as they want. PSST: the chicken marinade is also divine as a steak marinade!
CHICKEN CAESAR BURGERS
If you don’t want to mess around with a salad this 4th of July, try my Chicken Caesar Burgers which are a dead-ringer for their crunchier counterpart. Make sure you look for gluten-free Caesar dressing, if you need it!
CHIPOTLE CHEDDAR TURKEY BURGERS WITH AVOCADO CREMA
Just say no to dry, gravely turkey burgers! Chipotle Cheddar Turkey Burgers with Avocado Crema are packed with flavor and ultra juicy. A showstopping burger for sure.
PEPPERCORN-CRUSTED BBQ RANCH BURGERS WITH CHILI LIME CRUNCHIES
It wouldn’t be the 4th of July at my house without some juicy beef burgers and Peppercorn-Crusted BBQ Ranch Burgers with Chili Lime Crunchies are crushing it. Rolled in crushed peppercorn before being grilled they pack a heat punch without blowing your face off, and the BBQ Ranch dressing helps cool your mouth down. These burgers are craveable.
ROOT BEER CAN CHICKEN
Root Beer Can Chicken is a grilling recipe that will impress. It has audibly crispy skin is all I’m saying. HELLO! And that smokey spice rub? You’ll be looking for more than a chicken sitting on a can of root beer to rub it on.
DAD’S KILLER BEERGARITAS
Delicious. A touch dangerous. The epitome of summertime happiness! My Dad’s been making his Killer Beergaritas for years and years and they’re so good people request them when they come over. Use gluten-free beer, if ya’ need it, and you’re set!
WATERMELON AGUA FRESCA
It’s been hot and sticky for the past couple of weeks around here so Watermelon Agua Fresca has been a staple in my refrigerator to help cool down with. Lincoln loves it too!
We’ve been eating this recipe for Dirt Cake for 25+ years. It’s a family favorite and, unlike Pepperidge Farms’ Birthday Cake, can easily be made gluten-free by using GF chocolate sandwich cookies (Glutino has a good one!) instead of Oreos. I can seriously taste this fun and festive desserts just by looking at the picture. It’s simply the best!
BLUEBERRY ALMOND CRISP
I don’t know about you but I could never turn down a fruit crisp if offered. Blueberry Almond Crisp is ultra special because it’s got sliced almonds in the crisp mix. NEXT LEVEL, people! This crisp is just sweet enough, uses fresh blueberries, and can be served at room temperature, too.
STRAWBERRY BLUEBERRY VANILLA CHEX BARS
Strawberry Blueberry Vanilla Chex Bars are perfectly festive for the fourth and totally gluten-free. They taste like vanilla cake spiked with sweet berries. People will be fighting for the last bar!
MINI S’MORE PIES
Mini S’More Pies bring out the kid in all of us! My Mom made these for a family lunch a couple years ago and I’m not sure who cheered harder – the grandkids or the adults. If you don’t have a bonfire planned for the 4th of July, bring out these adorable treats instead – they’re easy to make ahead of time, too.
STRAWBERRY ANGEL FOOD CAKE JARS
If you aren’t being served Dirt Cake for dessert at my parent’s house on the 4th of July, my Mom’s probably going to whip out angel food cake slices topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. I created this cute, portable version with homemade whipped cream a few years ago and holy. buckets. they’re as adorable as they are delectable.
