The little boys and I went to Michael’s the other day for a photo box and I about fell over at the sight of ALL THINGS FALL nearly exploding out the doors. By the way, when did Michael’s become like THE spot for adorable home furnishings? If I hadn’t already committed to a Cape Cod design theme in our house there’s a very real chance it’d be exclusively decorated in cottage-chic decor from Michaels.
Never did find that photo box.
Anyway, all that to say fall’s a comin’ my friend – are you ready?? As I mentioned earlier this week, I cannot wait. Bring on cool mornings, apple picking, leaf gazing, and homemade pumpkin spice lattes. Let’s get chili bubbling on the stove, college football on tv, and meat in the smoker. Most importantly, let’s bust out some sweatshirts!
I’m no fashionista, but I love getting dressed in the fall. It’s like stepping into a hug each morning, right? I hate tight and revealing clothing, which seems hard to get away from in the summer when it’s 95 degrees outside, but when the temps dip I relish being able to pick out a cozy shirt, snug boots, and a warm scarf. That said, I couldn’t be more excited to talk fall wardrobe essentials in today’s episode of Just 5 Things!
From lightweight coats to athleisure wear, and the only flats you’ll ever need, these 5 fall wardrobe essentials are what’s taking up space in my closet this time of year!
Anorak/Utility Coat
My fall wardrobe MVP is this Market & Spruce Anorak – I LOVE THIS PIECE! Anoraks are lightweight yet definitely protect against chilly fall mornings and evenings. My wardrobe is predominately blues, creams, whites, and greys, which means this army green color goes with everything I own.
The only catch with this jacket is that it’s from Stitchfix. That said, ask your stylist to hook you up, or here are a few similar options. Again, can’t stress how much I love this piece.
- Twill Field Jacket // Old Navy
- Short Hooded Parka // H&M
- Josie Anorak Jacket // Kohls
- Cotton Twill Utility Jacket // Nordstrom
- Hooded Twill Utility Jacket // Old Navy
Scarves
Whether we’re going pumpkin picking or I need a fall date night accessory, scarves fit the bill. I hardly wear any jewelry so they’re a great way to liven up an outfit and keep cozy at the same time. Here are a few of my favorites. Also be sure to check out 25 ways to wear a scarf (aka the cutest video of all time!)
- Madewell Soft Plaid Fringe Scarf // Nordstrom
- Lightweight Printed Scarf // Old Navy
- Drapey Oversize Scarf // Gap
- Stripe Jacquard Scarf // World Market
- Heritage Houndstooth Scarf // Nordstrom
- Plain Infinity Scarf // Nordstrom
Denim Jacket
Being a child of the 80s and 90s, I can appreciate a good denim jacket and have held onto my obsession through three or four cycles of them going in and out of style. What can I say, it pays to be patient! It also pays to have a distressed denim jacket in your fall wardrobe. I like to wear mine with moto jeggings, leggings, or skinny corduroys, plus it’s a must for pairing with fall dresses. I have an old Jessica Simpson jean jacket but here are a few similar options.
- AEO Classic Denim Jacket // American Eagle
- Icon Denim Jacket // GAP
- J. Crew Denim Jacket // Nordstrom
- Distressed Denim Jacket // LOFT
Sweatshirts
I’d like to try and save face by calling the following fall wardrobe essential “long sleeved tops” but let’s be real, they’re sweatshirts. Maybe we could call them athleisure wear?? Whatever you call ’em, they’re life! I live in these types of tops when the weather cools down – warm yet lightweight, I pair them with jeans and sneakers then I’m out the door. They are a busy girl’s must-have for fall and here’s a few I love.
- Crew Neck Sweatshirt // Old Navy
- Good Vibes Sweatshirt // Nordstrom
- Studio Cinch Sweatshirt // Athleta
- Luxe Pose Top // Athleta
- Aerie City Sweatshirt // American Eagle
Boots
I’m not really a shoe gal – I’d rather spend my money on food! – but I gotta give it up for my favorite fall foot covering: boots. Up until a couple years ago I bought a cheap, $30 pair of mid-calf riding boots almost every year because they’d end up horribly wrinkled and cracked by the time spring came around. Then I invested in a good pair of leather boots and they’ve held up SO well. Boots keep my feet warm, of course, and they also instantly dress up any outfit – even if there’s a sweatshirt on top! Being 5’2, I’ve found that a 15″ shaft height or shorter works best for my legs. Here are my top picks:
- Sebago Nashoba High Boot Waterproof // Zappos
- OluKai Kaupili // Zappos
- Frye Paige Tall Riding // Zappos
Honorable Mentions
I have to sneak in a mention of my other favorite fall footwear – Azika Ballet Flats from Steve Madden. I am 100% brand loyal to Steve Madden’s flats and buy a new pair of black and cognac (tan, y’all) every year because they’re such a classic and go with everything – aka I wear.them.out. Highly recommend!
I also just purchased this Ahh-Mazingly Soft Boyfriend Shirt from American Eagle that will be perfect for layering over T’s or simply wearing on its own over a pair of jeans. Legit THE SOFTEST MATERIAL in existence, and what do you know? It’s longer in the back to cover the buns – my favorite type of shirt cut!
What are a few of your fall wardrobe essentials?

Love love love fall.. best season for getting dressed!
These are great suggestions
LOVE!!!! I have been itching to get some new fall items. I just ordered a few of these cardis from Old Navy last week and they are super comfy.

I’m having a hard time getting as excited for fall as you since our heat index is projected to hit 109 today in Houston, but these items are super cute and are making me excited for December! Thanks for sharing.
You bet, Sarah! Glad you enjoyed the picks!
Fall is ABSOLUTELY the best dressing weather. I am guilty of both buying the cheap boots every year (despite saying every year, “This is the year I’ll splurge on nice boots!) and of having the same denim jacket for an amount of years I cannot admit it. It is officially being retired this year and I’m having THE most difficult time replacing it.
I’m bummed the Jessica Simpson jacket I have isn’t offered anymore – it’s understandable though since I bought it like 10 years ago! The American Eagle one I posted seems to be the most similar.
please take a moment to get back to me. Please
Hey Beth! I answered your comment above – here’s my answer again in case you missed it:
“I have a pair of Ariat riding boots that are no longer made – they only make western boots now for whatever reason! The boots I listed are most similar in design.”
Thanks for the ideas. My wardrobe NEEDS an update! It’s been hard for me to stay fashionable with pregnancy/post partum weight fluctuations. Never want to buy clothes because I never know how long they will fit, but it’s time!
Same. :( I just realized that I will never be the same SHAPE as I was before kids (weight can fluctuate but the distribution of the weight is just different for me now!) so I broke down and started buying new pieces this year.
Thanks a lot Kristin. The Nordstrom utility jacket is on its way to my house and the athleta sweatshirt is ready for me to pick up in store tomorrow. ? Seriously though- can’t wait.
If I can be comfortable and not embarrass my kids at the same time it’s a win-win. Fall is my absolute favorite. I just wish it wasn’t followed by the season that shall not be named (aka germ-fest and cold.all.of.the.time.) Everything listed in our post is perfect for fall! Have a great weekend!
Woooot! You will LIVE in that sweatshirt this fall!
Any suggestions for jeans? I’m also 5’2 and always seem to have a hard time finding a pair that I love
I like the brand Kut from the Kloth. Some of their pants come in petite sizes, which is VERY IMPORTANT in my opinion, in terms of getting a great fit. I am 5 feet tall.
Thank you!
Banana Republic petite jeans are great, plus they hem for free!
Thanks, Kristin!
love this Anorak (same ‘army’ green or olive as they call it) from LL Bean https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/118011?feat=610-GN1&page=classic-utility-jacket&csp=f
thanks for the other options as this was the only one on my list, now I’m going to check out your suggestions!
Ohhh, that’s super cute – you know it’d hold up well being from LL Bean, too!
I have that Old Navy jacket that you linked to and love it! I have gotten so many compliments. I may have to buy another color since it’s on sale :)
It’s the most similar looking one to the StitchFix coat I think. Sooo cute – I’m tempted to get the Old Navy one in orange!
My hubby signed me up for Stitch Fix as a birthday gift and I got a denim coat VERY similar to this in my first box. I love Stitch Fix, but not something I will be doing long term for price reasons! Just doing 2-3 boxes for fun.
Happy Friday! Love your suggestions! I keep hearing recommendations about the moto leggings but I’m currently pregnant…did you happen to wear those during either of your pregnancies? Just curious for sizing.
I didn’t :( I tried but the elastic waistband was too uncomfortable with a bump!
which ones of each did you go with? Especially the boots?
I have a pair of Ariat riding boots that are no longer made – they only make western boots now for whatever reason! The boots I listed are most similar in design.
I agree with all of these things! This is my “uniform” all autumn long. A good pair of leggings, or “dressy” skinnies, riding boots, and scarf. And work to weekend means alternating a nice blouse, for thin sweatshirt/flannel, and a blazer for denim or utility jacket! Also, WELL DONE with the videos! They look so good!
Thank you Hannah, that means a lot – you are always so supportive! :)
Well great, now I want everything. Fyi, I’ve been reading your blog for years from San Diego. My husband and I recently moved to Omaha, and I would like to thank you. You are the only reason I know that puppy chow is not dog food. My students were asking to make it for a treat and you saved me from embarrassment. :) I really really hope you do a post like this for winter! I’m going to need a new jacket and I’d love suggestions from someone that lives in the general vicinity. I always love your posts about clothes and accessories.
Haha!! You are too kind – and I’m SO glad you now know what Puppy Chow is – I couldn’t live without it. I will definitely do a post for the season you mentioned – GULP – I don’t even want to think about it yet though!! ?
