I’ve got the cutest little Valentine’s Day treat to share with you which calls us to all channel our inner Sandra Lee. Brownie Mix Truffles are so sweet and simple, I can hardly even stand it!
Brownie Mix Truffles are, you guessed it, chocolate truffles made from a brownie mix which you bake, fluff, roll, and then dunk in melted chocolate. If chocolate dipping isn’t your bag (trust me, it didn’t used to be mine either!) roll these truffles in powdered sugar for a sweet, professional look.
The result is a super-dense, thick, and fudgy truffle that nobody would guess started out as baked brownies. If you’re anything like me though, instead of letting the recipient of said truffles think you perfected the art of melting chocolate, butter, and cream together, you’ll tell them, HaHA, guess what?? It took nearly no skill to make these! No really, they’re made from a boxed brownie mix!!” Kind of like how I can’t stop telling people how cheap something is when they compliment me on it.
Oh I really like your necklace!
Wow, thanks! It was $2 from Forever 21! Can you believe it? $2! From Forever 21? $2…?
Crickets.
At any rate, Brownie Mix Truffles can be made several days in advance, and would be the most adorable Valentine’s Day gift for your sweetie, kids, co-workers, or kids’ teachers. They can be packaged in so many cute ways too, like popping the truffles into mini cupcake wrappers then nestling in festive tins. I picked this one up for $.99 at Michaels (the craft store, ya’ll) the other day!
K, first things fits, bake a box of brownie mix according to package directions. Any kind that has the word “fudge” in the name will do. You can also use my irresistible Gluten Free Brownies recipe!
Oh! Don’t be tempted to swap out the oil or butter called for on the box for applesauce or yogurt to make it low-fat. This results in a fluffy, cake-like brownie, which won’t stick together. We want dense and FUDGEY brownies!
Let the brownies cool completely (you could bake them a day ahead of time) then cut off the edges which are hard and crispy. I like to freeze them for an emergency chocolate stash!
Next, use a fork to fluff the brownies all the way down the pan.
Now use a cookie scoop or two spoons to scoop out 1 Tablespoon brownie and roll into a ball. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet and continue on with the rest of the brownies.
You’ll get about 3 dozen when all is said and done.
Ok, time to melt the chocolate to dip the brownie mix truffles in! Like I said, I used to be the hottest mess when trying to melt chocolate, until I started using Baker’s chocolate. It melts like a dream. Add 6oz each white and semi-sweet chocolate into separate microwave safe bowls then nuke for 1 minute and stir. Microwave in 20 second increments after that, stirring in between increments, until the chocolate is nice and smooth.
Drop the truffles into the chocolate then use two forks to transfer it back and forth a couple times, letting the excess chocolate drip off.
Transfer the truffle back to the waxed paper, then srinkle with festive nonperils and embellishments. I got a big pack of these at Michaels too!
I also tried my hand at making brownie mix truffle pops. It wasn’t too hard, actually! Just freeze the truffles with a cake pop stick (found in craft stores and Bed, Bath & Beyond) for 15 minutes then dunk in the melted chocolate. Use the holes in a colander to hold them up while they set.
Pop the truffles into the refrigerator until hardened, then package and present!

Brownie Mix Truffles are festive, sweet, and super easy. Make and package then give to your loved ones!

- 12oz Baker's chocolate (6oz each semi-sweet and white)

I cannot WAIT for you to try these! They are as mouthwatering and sweet as they are precious and pretty.
Here’s another idea for packaging the truffles – drop them into clear treat bags then tie with a pretty ribbon!

First, I agree your photography is amazing in this post! Don’t be mad but I was thinking “where did she get these great pictures from?” :) Beautifully done!
Second, it is not fair at all for you to make something that looks so good that I am practically licking my computer screen. Seriously. They look awesome! Can’t wait to try them!
Third, I do the same thing when I get a deal on something. Why is it so hard for us to take a compliment?
Angie 02.07.2013
LOL I know how that is. Last week I was at a get together
” I LOVE your diaper bag!” ( its a Kate Spade”
” Thanks! I got it a a thrift store!”
” Don’t tell me that”
awkward. But there is nothing wrong with being thrifty!
Julia Jolliff 02.07.2013
Beautiful! I love the colander idea–genius!
Alisha 02.07.2013
These are brilliant and PERFECT for v-day! I might make some for my hubby’s office (because if I make these and keep them at home….that would be trouble for my thighs!)
Yvonne C 02.07.2013
OMGoodness! These truffles look amazing. And the colander idea for the pops was brilliant! I am totally going to try that next time I make cake pops….or brownie truffles! :o)
Ashley @ Wishes and Dishes 02.07.2013
I want to try these so bad but I’m soooo not good at the dipping part. Mine never look pretty!
Debra 02.07.2013
These look awesome and easy! Thanks for sharing.
I will soon become an Iowa girl. Moving there in about 10 weeks from sunny (hot) FL…
Ambar 02.07.2013
why havent i thought about the colander idea! Thank you for the tip! I love the idea of using brownie mix!
Leandra 02.07.2013
Love this post, as I love your whole site! I was laughing out loud with the Forever 21 comment. I ALWAYS do that, I literally can’t stop myself. I don’t know how to take a normal compliment, have to tell people that it was from like, Old Navy Clearance. EVERY TIME!
Maria 02.07.2013
Love these girl! SO fun!
Christina 02.07.2013
These look adorable! I’m having my girlfriends over soon this would be perfect to have after dinner! What kind of mix did you use?
Melissa 02.07.2013
These look totally adorable and delicious. And I am SO that person who’s all, “It was only $5 at Target!” when I get a compliment. It’s embarrassing.
Luann 02.07.2013
These look so yummy and thought I might clue you in on another really fun idea for the sweetheart for Valentine’s Day. My daughter Heidi found red and white heart shaped cheese raviloi at Costco. I headed straight there after I left her house. They are big hearts too, not little small ones. So cute! They come with a recipe on the back for red alfredo sauce which does NOT use red food coloring (I know that is a no no for those who want to eat safely and healthy). I will personally just use my favorite jar red pasta sauce and probably add some chicken. Anyway, just wanted to tell you about it in case you wanted to check them out to go with your cute Valentine dessert. :) Knowing you, you will come up with a way to make them yourself…..
Iowa Girl Eats 02.07.2013
Adorable! Thanks for letting me know, Luann! Looks like a trip to Costco is in order. ;)
Karen Elizabeth 02.07.2013
Wow…super-great idea with the colander! Very crafty and innovative, must try this now.
Danielle 02.07.2013
Pretty! Since I started reading your blog in 2010, you’ve vastly improved in the photography realm. These photos are really fun, colorful, and punchy!
Katie Maliszewski 02.07.2013
Three things:
1. I want to eat 1000 of those truffles.
2. I do the same thing with the bargain shopping! For my bachelorette party last year, I got my dress for $7 at Forever 21, and at the party I couldn’t stop talking about it! My friends were annoyed. And now I’m doing it AGAIN!
3. I love that you used the words “emergency chocolate” together. I have an emergency chocolate stash, too.
Katie 02.07.2013
HAHA i do the same thing with sharing with people how inexpensive something is when they compliment me on it! ex: my boyfriend and i just moved into a new house and bought a faux-leather couch in the sale section at jordan’s- it looks like real leather though and we’ve been getting compliments that people love our leather couch. i thank them and proceed to tell them we got it in the sale section and it’s not real leather but looks so real! because it’s so exciting to me that we found such a steal! my boyfriend has asked me to quit sharing that info… haha
Alison 02.07.2013
They look SO fantastic!!! I absolutely love the way you photographed them.
Katie @ Blonde Ambition 02.07.2013
No frickin way! This is so simple! People can bag on Sandra Lee and her boozy semi-homemade ways all they want, but I think more often than not, she’s on to something ;P
Bek @ Crave 02.06.2013
These are too cute! And so simple. Love it :)
