Heeeeaven help me. Buffalo Cheddar-Ranch Chex Mix, my friends!
First things first, are you ready for turkey day tomorrow? Bird thawed (that’s important, I think,) pies prepped, sides planned, and potatoes peeled? One of my favorite time-saving, mashed potato-making tricks is to peel then chop your potatoes and store them in the refrigerator completely submerged in a bowl of water for up to 24 hours ahead of time so you don’t have to prep 10lbs of potatoes on Thanksgiving day. Who’s got the time, especially when there’s boatloads of Buffalo Cheddar-Ranch Chex Mix to be devoured?!
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Chex Mix is a staple at Ben’s and my family holiday gatherings. My Mom uses double the spices and gobs of Worcestershire sauce in her recipe, while Ben’s Mom adds Cheerios and party peanuts to hers. Well guess what? I’m a Mom now so I thought I’d come up with my own go-to Chex Mix concoction, and gluten-free Buffalo-Cheddar Ranch Mix is it. So, so it!
Rice and Corn Chex combined with homemade ranch dip seasoning mix, a bit of butter, and spicy buffalo wing sauce are microwaved for four minutes (FOUR MINUTES!) then tossed with crispy gluten-free cheese crackers and buffalo pretzels, and salted peanuts, for a homemade Chex Mix that’s spicy, cheesy, crunchy – in short, craveable.
I cannot overemphasize how simple this snack mix is to make – we’re talking no more than 15 minutes from box to taste buds. Five minutes to prep, five minutes to cook (including stirring,) and 5 minutes to cool. How simple is that??
Buffalo and ranch dressing are a classic combination of mouthwatering flavors and I really love the addition of crispy cheese crackers in here. I’ll show you the gluten-free ones I used below, but if you don’t need to make this recipe gluten-free, you could use Cheeze Its instead. That said I loved the GF crackers so much that I’d encourage anyone to give them a try.
Whether you whip up this homemade Chex Mix as a snack to enjoy before your Thanksgiving feast, for a party, football watching, movie night, or any night – enjoy!
Start by adding 5 cups each Corn and Rice Chex to a very large, microwave-safe bowl.
Next melt 1/4 cup butter for 35-40 seconds then stir in 1/3 cup Buffalo Wing Sauce (not hot sauce) a dash or more of cayenne pepper, and a homemade ranch dip seasoning mix containing, 1 Tablespoon dried parsley, 1 teaspoon each garlic and onion powder, 3/4 teaspoon dried dill weed, and 1/2 teaspoon each dried chives and salt. I tried this recipe a few times without the cayenne pepper but I loved the extra bit of heat it brought to each bite!
Pour the mixture over the cereal then toss with a spatula until the cereal is evenly coated.
Then microwave for 4 minutes, stirring halfway through.
Next add 2 cups each gluten-free buffalo wing pretzels sticks and cheese crackers. Normally when making Chex Mix you’d toss the crackers and pretzels with the chex cereal and spices but GF crackers and pretzels don’t hold up well to being sauced then heated so adding pre-seasoned mix-ins is key.
As I mentioned, these Crunchmaster cheese crackers are BOMB. They’re super crispy like a chip and don’t taste fake. I’m also obsessed with these Snyder gluten-free pretzels. They taste exactly like the regular ones – I would have no idea they weren’t gluten-filled if I didn’t buy them myself!
Also add 1 cup salted peanuts then stir to combine and spread the Chex Mix out on wax paper to cool.
Start snacking immediately or store in an airtight container until ready to serve!

This looks amazing! Do you think it would work to cook it in a crockpot?

Like Shaina, I too had soggy Chex Mix that tasted stale after it cooled. I also made it in the microwave. I tried longer but it seemed to get soggier. Here’s what I’m thinking: I use a generic brand of Buffalo Sauce that is thicker than Frank’s. I also didn’t stir the sauce right away after I poured it in the cereal and perhaps I didn’t mix it as well as I could have. If I make it in the future, I would use the buffalo sauce recommended in the recipe and also try the oven method.

yum! I’ve had my eye on this recipe since November and plan to make it for the super bowl! I’m planning to use non-GF pretzels and cheese crackers. Any idea on whether I should add them before I toss with sauce or should I do it after like you did? Thank you!

Thanks IGE for sharing! I tried this recipe both ways, microwave and oven. I think I prefer the oven method.
I used Hidden Valley ranch powder (4 tbsp.) and that made the sauce a little too thick so I thinned it out with extra buffalo sauce. With my oven, it didn’t take the full hour at 250, but about 45 minutes. I was reading the recipe as I was buying the ingredients in the store so I glossed over the buffalo wing pretzels and just bought regular. Those were great too!
This looks great in my holiday treat bags and it is getting rave reviews.

Kristin help! Made this yesterday and it got like soggy in the microwave and then turned stale as it cooled. My husband said – the chex mix is really good but somehow it’s stake already. :-( Bummer! Any idea why this happened? Is the oven method better than the microwave? Help! I had such high hopes for this!
Kristin 12.18.2014
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that!! Maybe cook it for a minute or two longer? Though I can’t think of why it would taste stale… If you make it again try cooking for longer and let me know how it turns out!
Kristin 12.18.2014
Oh, and you could try the oven method – just follow the standard Chex Mix baking temp/time!
Denise 12.10.2014
Can you use regular dry ranch dressing mix? If so how much?
Kristin 12.12.2014
You bet – you’d just use one of the Ranch dressing packets.

Oh yum! Seriously I could eat the whole bowl full.
Kathleen 11.26.2014
Looks delicious! I’m dying to make this, but I don’t have a large enough microwave-safe bowl to hold everything. Any tips for how to adapt it for the oven instead? Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Kristin 11.26.2014
Hi Kathleen! I did some research on Google and the consensus is 250 degrees for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes. I haven’t tested this recipe with that time/temp combo but I’d start there then pull it out when you think it’s done (just note that my microwave-cooked chex mix didn’t crisp fully until it was cooled so you’ll probably want to pull the mix out of the oven before it’s audibly crispy…if that made any sense?!) :)

Being from Buffalo, NY (yes, where the blizzard has hit and we were off from school for a week because of like 6 feet of snow) I love this spin on chex mix. Especially the Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, My husband practically drinks it! I didn’t know you could buy it outside Buffalo, NY, but it’s the #1 thing our family and friends ask us to send them out of state!!!
Lindsey @ Simply Lindsey 11.26.2014
I love chex mix!! My Mom makes the traditional type every year for Christmas. This would be a great recipe to add to the mix, especially to enjoy during football games!
