Today’s recipe for Homemade Gluten-Free Seasoned Salt falls under the “things you didn’t know you needed until you had them” category. Other contenders include remote starters on vehicles (did I mention how cold it is here?!) understanding how dog’s really drink water (umm,) and self-closing umbrellas (my in-laws got us one for Christmas and let me tell you – game changer!) Oh and Google Maps. What in the WORLD did we all do before Google Maps? Road atlas’…the horror!
Anyway, over the holidays I shared a recipe for Gluten-Free Chex Mix which called for homemade seasoned salt to flavor each delectable bite. It was as simple as looking at the ingredients on a bottle of Lawry’s online, then snagging the individual seasonings from my spice cupboard and mixing them together. Sans tricalcium phosphate, a key ingredient in Lawry’s, which I happened to be out of at the time.
(That’s a joke.)
ANYWAY, the homemade seasoned salt turned out so well that I made a huge batch of it to keep on my tray o’ seasonings and oils, conveniently located next to our stove, and have been adding it to pretty much everything I’ve simmered and sauted since.
Talk about a game changer!
4 ingredients – salt, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder – combine to make a pumped up, everyday, all-purpose seasoning that adds a ton of flavor to dishes without extra calories, fat, or effort, really. Mix up a batch then season away for days. Here’s how I’ve been using mine.
10 Ways to Use Gluten Free Seasoned Salt
- Hard boiled eggs – slice, season, eat.
- Salads – sprinkle seasoned salt on top of greens then dress with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. Per-fec-tion.
- Meats – season chicken, pork or steak then grill or saute away.
- Guacamole – mash together ripe avocado, seasoned salt, and lime juice then devour.
- Popcorn – spritz with a little extra virgin olive oil then sprinkle on seasoned salt. Crazy addicting.
- Vegetables – adding a dash to Lincoln’s steamed broccoli has been a runaway hit.
- Burgers – season ground beef with the blend then add Worcestershire sauce and pepper.
- Sweet Potato Fries – a family favorite! Drizzle extra virgin olive oil over sliced sweet potatoes then toss with seasoned salt and roast for 15-25 minutes at 425.
- Soups – a dash or 20 added to Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup? DIVINE.
- Mushrooms – saute sliced mushrooms in olive oil until the liquid has evaporated then season and continue to cook until golden brown.
While these 10 foods are complimented perfectly by the homemade gluten-free seasoned salt, there’s no limit to what you can add it to – including the recipe coming later this week. Blend up a batch and get ready!

Then, wait for it, stir to combine. Bet you didn’t see that coming!
Transfer the seasoned salt into a bowl or shaker, I bought the one you see in the other photos at the regular grocery store, then immediately start adding a boost of flavor to everything you cook!

Just regular kosher salt.

Thanks for this. I’ve been wanting a salt-free version of Lawry’ s for years (don’t know why I didn’t just look at the ingredients like you did), and now I can make my own. Can’t wait to try this on oven fries and popcorn.

Bump up the amount of paprika, add in a tablespoon cumin and a tsp. of red pepper or cayenne and you will have the seasoning to potato oles from taco johns

Thanks for the TJ’s hack!

I can’t wait to try this! Our house is hooked on a different brand of seasoned salt that has a similar weird ingredient in it to prevent clumping that I’d rather it not have.
We LOVE a light sprinkle of seasoned salt on buttered toast. If you haven’t tried that before, I hope you do!

I feel like unless I work for it.. It’s hard to see what you post all week. It is click after click. I miss the few recipes of the week on one page. It’s extra work for the customer which actually causes me to stop clicking.

YAY!! Thank you! I’m trying really hard to go processed food/sugar free and my DH LOVES Lawrys and Cookies on EVERYTHING! I’m going to try this. Love your recipes!
Kristin 01.14.2016
Good for you!! Glad to have been of some help. :)

Are you using regular table salt? Might be worth substituting Pink Himalayan Salt instead. 84 trace minerals/elements, less refined, less sodium per serving, and no chemicals/bleach/synthetic iodine/anti-caking agents.
Kristin 01.13.2016
Yep, you could definitely do that! I just didn’t want to grind 5 Tablespoons worth of it from my grinder! ;)
Adrianne 01.13.2016
This is one of those things that I never thought to make at home until reading this. Now I feel silly for not realizing it. I’ve got everything and making a batch tonight! TY for the idea. :)
Sally 01.13.2016
I don’t like garlic salt, could you replace garlic with black pepper and if so how much pepper? Nice to keep this on the shelf and naturally available.
Kristin 01.13.2016
If you removed the garlic powder I’d decrease the amount of salt to 5 Tablespoons, then if you wanted to make it more of an “all-purpose” seasoning and add pepper, I’d start with 2-3 teaspoons then add more depending on how peppery you’d like the mix to be!

“Natural flavors” are sworn enemies of this celiac! I’ve gotten burned way too many times. Great recipe, Kristin!

Kristin 01.13.2016
I’d been looking forever too – I needed something long and flat and everything had sloped sides. Found this tray at IKEA!

Right about now, I’m wishing we didn’t still have 3/4 of a Costco size container of Lowry’s in our pantry. Definitely pinning for later!
Debtgirl 01.13.2016
Another brilliant idea!!!
Shirley 01.13.2016
Yes yes yes!!! I could use this for so many things! Thank you for the recipe:)
Emily 01.13.2016
Wow – when you say, “stir to combine,” can you explain that in more detail? I’m a little cloudy on the details ;) Seriously though – one of those things that you never think you’ll need a recipe for, until you do, and you wonder what the heck…
Kristin 01.13.2016
Hehehehe ;) Yes, I hope you’ll try it – we hardly use regular salt at all anymore!
Kristi 01.13.2016
This looks great! Random (and probably unexpected :) ) question for your- where did you buy your measuring spoons and wooden bowl? I love them!
Lindsay @ BluegrassBites 01.13.2016
I need to know where you got your measuring spoons, too! They’re so pretty!
Kristin 01.13.2016
Ben got them for me for Christmas at Nordstrom’s!
