Unlike permed bangs, shoulder pads, and neon everything, the recipe for The Best Fruit Dip Ever has stood the test of time. My family and I have been enjoying this sweet and yummy fruit dip recipe since the 80s!
(You can’t say the same about acid washed jeans now, can you?)
Our easy fruit dip recipe has stood the test of time with you, too. It’s been a reader favorite for years and years on account of its whippy, fluffy texture, marshmallow-cheesecake-meets-orange-creamsicle flavor, plus the fact that you only need 3 ingredients to make it.
A gorgeous, crowd pleasing dessert that takes minutes to prepare? Here for it!
Serve this Fruit Dip everywhere from baby and bridal showers, to summer get togethers, and festive holiday spreads with lots of fresh fruits, berries, and cookie dippers. Or, my personal favorite, a giant spoon. ;)
What is Fruit Dip Made Of?
Scroll down to the recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.
- Marshmallow fluff – Also known as Marshmallow Creme. I use the “Marshmallow Fluff” brand of marshmallow creme, which I find at World Market, as it’s gluten free.
- Softened cream cheese – I typically 1/3 less fat cream cheese in this recipe, though full fat is great too.
- Orange juice concentrate – The frozen kind that comes in a can (speaking of the 80s!) Use the remaining concentrate to make a pitcher of orange juice.
Can I Make this Dairy Free?
Yes ma’am! Simply swap regular cream cheese for the same amount of vegan cream cheese. We like Kite Hill or Violife vegan cream cheeses. If you can taste a little “funk” at the end, add a teaspoon vanilla extract.
In regards to making this recipe completely vegan, marshmallow creme/fluff typically contains eggs so it’s difficult to make this recipe vegan unless you’re able to source or make a homemade, egg-free marshmallow fluff.
Our Favorite Dunkers
I can’t think of a type of fruit or berry that wouldn’t be delicious dolloped with this yummy cream cheese fruit dip, though we’ve always served it with the following:
- Grapes
- Strawberries
- Pineapple chunks
- Apple slices
- Blackberries
- Blueberries
- Sliced bananas
- Mango slices
- Cantaloupe
- Graham crackers
- Nilla wafers

How to Make this Recipe
Start by scooping marshmallow fluff into a large, microwave-safe bowl then heat for 15 seconds to soften it up a bit. Next add thawed orange juice concentrate plus softened cream cheese.
Use a whisk or electric mixer to whip the dip until it’s very smooth without any lumps. Cover the bowl then place it into the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.
When it’s time to serve, scoop the dip into a festive bowl then surround it on a platter by your favorite fruits, berries, and dippers. So beautiful!
Why is my Fruit Dip Lumpy?
From time to time you may have little lumps of cream cheese in your whipped fruit dip, which doesn’t affect the flavor of course, but a smooth and creamy dip is part of the presentation.
Hare are my two best tips and pointers for avoiding or troubleshooting lumpy fruit dip:
- Let the cream cheese fully soften. It’s important that your cream cheese is very VERY soft before attempting to mix it with the other ingredients. I leave my cream cheese out for several hours ahead of making the fruit dip.
- Troubleshooting lumpy dip. If, despite your best efforts, you still see a few lumps, let the dip sit on the counter for 20 minutes then blast through it again with a hand mixer or stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment.
How Long does Fruit Dip Last in the Fridge?
Prepared fruit dip will keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days, so it’s perfect for making ahead of a party or potluck. This recipe is also great to make on the weekends to dollop into school lunch boxes as a fun treat for the kiddos during the week. My Mom always served it to my brothers and me as after school snacks. :)
Can You Freeze Fruit Dip?
You can freeze this fruit dip safely, but it won’t be quite as airy and fluffy after freezing then thawing. Just something to keep in mind!

Just 3 ingredients? That’s amazing!
Can you make the night before? Having a big party and need to make a large spread. Is it good the next day?
You bet!
Quick question. I want to make this but I have someone who is allergic to oranges. Do you have any suggestions for what else I could use?
You can use any sweet jam/jelly – raspberry/strawberry, etc. Just heat it for about 15 seconds in the microwave first to get it runny!
This looks amazing! I live in New Zealand and we don’t have jars of marshmallow stuff. What do you think I could use instead? Also, I’m sure we don’t have frozen orange juice concentrate but I could just use the carton concentrate right? Thanks :) Lizy
You might try cool whip/whipped cream?! Also, you can use any jam or jelly instead of the orange juice concentrate. Just warm it up a bit in the microwave first to get it runny!
There’s a B&B in northern Illinois that serves a version of this with fresh fruit every morning as part of the breakfast spread. She uses a It is served with grapes, strawberries, kiwi, banana slices, cantalope and honeydew melon.
Mmmmmmm! I agree with you – it can make ANYTHING taste good! I could (and have!) eat it straight from the bowl with a spoon.
you could make home made marshmallow creme.
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
1/8 teaspoon fine salt
2 large egg whites, at room temperature
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
INSTRUCTIONS
Stir together the sugar, corn syrup, water, and salt in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 240°F on a candy/fat thermometer.
Place the egg whites and cream of tartar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Start whipping the egg whites to soft peaks on medium speed. (The goal is to have the egg whites whipped and ready, waiting for your syrup to be drizzled in. If they’re whipping faster than your syrup is coming to temperature, just stop the mixer until the syrup is ready.)
When the syrup reaches 240°F, reduce the mixer speed to low and slowly drizzle about 2 tablespoons of syrup into the egg whites to warm them. (If you add too much syrup at once, the whites will scramble.) Slowly drizzle in the rest of the syrup. Increase the speed to medium high and whip until the marshmallow crème is stiff and glossy, about 7 minutes. Add in the vanilla and whip 2 minutes more. Use immediately or refrigerate stored in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
no comparison
I have another one for you to try…
sugar free vanilla pudding (just the powder stuff)
16 oz. fat free plain yogurt
8 oz fat free cool whip
blend all together and it tastes just like the mashmallow fluff stuff – no orange zest, though, but could be added!
Your blog is so colorful, clean and appealing. Thanks for sharing so many vibrant recipes!
Oh I cannot wait to make this! Thanks for sharing.
whats the orange stuff on top – orange zest?
Yep! Sorry, should have mentioned!
I just have to tell you how much I LOVE your blog!! Thank you for all of the awesome recipes and your Friday favorites….I always look forward to seeing what you find each week!
I’m totally making this. Anything with Marshmallow Fluff and I’m game :) (except I like to Fluff brand – it must be that retro bottle). BTW, my friend usually makes hers with strawberry cream cheese and cool whip. Still delicious.
I love taking flavored cream cheese & marshmallow fluff and mixing them for fruit dip. I’ve also seen a chocolate one using Greek yogurt! YUM!
I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of fruit dips. However, I can still see this being a huge hit at my neighborhood’s 4th of July Party. There are always a bunch of kids who would just love this!
you read my mind! I’m making mini fruit kabobs/edible bouquet for my daughter’s PreK birthday treats!
Would just like to say a big THANK YOU for putting your descriptions of photos BEFORE the photo! It’s a small touch that makes me happy. :)
This dip was a staple at graduations and baby showers in the 80’s! I still make it. Weird 80’s food was my son watching the Mr. Rogers show and them eating a banana with a cheese slice wrapped around it. It got him to eat and he loved it, I never tried it, too weird! He still eats it today I hear from his girl friend and he turned 31 yesterday!
I love your fruit kabobs! I bet they taste so good in that dip.
My mom also made it with strawberry cream cheese and marshmallow fluff. I’ve made it for work parties, and I always bring home an empty bowl. Delish!
When I was growing up my dad would make Porcupine Meatballs. I loved them and still make them today because they are super simple and so good. http://iamahoneybee.com/2009/09/25/porcupine-meatballs/
Awww – those are so cute! I love that your Dad made them too. ;)
my dad always did a lot of cooking when I grew up. when I went to college he wrote out a bunch of family recipes for me, like my grandmother’s gravy (red sauce), and has come up to boston to hang out and make dinner together. :-)
Love your blog!!
Yum!!!! I love fruit dip, but never had it with orange juice! I loved my Mom’s TexMex! It makes me think of my childhood! And my dad making breakfast! :)
