Friday Favorites

Happy Friday, everyone!

Holy buckets this week went by at warp speed – perhaps because I literally couldnotwait for new fall Thursday night NBC shows to premier last night. Did anyone else watch? It always takes a few episodes to get a feel for the new season, but it appears Parks & Rec and Up All Night (adore) will continue to bring the funny this year. The jury’s still out re: The Office though. That episode was a little depressing! One thing I do know for sure is that I am loving the new assertive Andy. HA!

As excited as I was for last night’s shows, I can’t even imagine how belligerent I will be when The Big Bang Theory premieres next week on CBS. I am completely addicted – best show on television, if you ask me!

Anyways, enough TV talk – should be a fun weekend around these parts. Tomorrow I am helping judge a cooking competition between local culinary school students at the Des Moines World Food Festival.

The World Food Festival is a free event running all weekend with foods from all over the world that you can taste for $1-5, plus tons of global beers and wine. I have wanted to go for YEARS, but always had something going on the weekend it’s in town. Can’t wait to go, help judge the competition, and EAT, natch!

Hope you’ve got a fun fall weekend in the forecast (sorry I can’t even help myself,) and in the meantime, please enjoy my favorite finds from around the web and beyond in this week’s Friday Favorites!

Favorite treat: Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Frosting. I cannot TELL you how bad I want to sink my teeth into twelve one of these!

Favorite find: Chloe Stud Earrings. My “everyday” earrings are gold balls, so I am loving this flattened version. Super cute and casual, but unique and elegant too.

Favorite game-day: Honey-Chipotle Turkey MeatballsIt’d be fantastic to have a big batch of these keeping warm in a crock pot for a yummy game day treat.

Favorite workout: The 5-4-3-2-1 Workout. 15 minute, heart-pumping workout.

Favorite nibble: Caramel Apple Scones. I am into EVERYTHING apple these days!

Favorite scent: Victoria’s Secret Pretty & Pure Body Mist. I am not a perfume girl – it makes me sneeze and gives me a headache – but this light-and-clean, yet girly smelling body mist is perfect. I picked some up last weekend and can’t stop spraying it! (PS this is the eau de toilette bottle – the one I bought is in the body mist bottle!)

Favorite supper: Sausage & Quinoa One-Pot Supper. Looks hearty but light, with tons of flavor.

Favorite fashion: Pippa Bag. Obsessed! Obsessed! Obsessed! Not only with the look, but with the amount of separated storage inside.

Favorite yum: Peach Almond Muffins. As much as I am loving apples these days, I’m still holding onto summer peaches with a fierceness, and I love the idea of pairing them with almonds in a yummy muffin. :)

Favorite project: Ombre dresser. Get a paint sample of every color in a paint swatch, then paint the drawers of a dresser accordingly. Super cute idea for a kids room.

Favorite sip: Maple Concord Cocktail. Perfect to use up all those in-season grapes!!

Favorite ‘do: Low Rolled Updo. Even shorter-medium length haired girls could pull off this cute rolled ‘do.

Favorite tutorial: How to Turn Leather into Suede. I have never seen anything like this! I’ll never get rid of scuffed or scratched leather shoes again!

Favorite bite: Garlic Cheese Pull Apart Bread. THIS.

Favorite place. Ben and I both agree that our “forever house” will need to have a massive front porch surrounded by trees with tons of room for rocking chairs so we can look at views like this every fall.

Favorite decadence: Fudge Brownie Cookie Dough Cake. BAHAHAHAHA! Unreal!

Favorite project: DIY Chevron Pumpkins. Some years the thought of digging into slimy pumpkin guts and carving a couple for the front porch appeals to me. Other years, it doesn’t. I think this is one of those years. Might try my hand at this fun project.

Favorite brew: Green Mountain Naturals Hot Apple Cider. Green Mountain just came out with these Apple Cider K Cups that only contain 5 ingredients and have no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. They are DELICIOUS and right now you can get 15% off all Green Mountain Naturals K-Cup packs with code: GMN8131

Favorite room: Navy & Coral Bedroom. I love to WEAR navy and coral together, but never thought to DECORATE with the combo. Love this bedroom color scheme!

Favorite find: Cinnamon Swirl Banana Bread. O. M. G. That is all!!

Omg. Love love LOVE Thursday Night Comedy night! My husband and I make it a point to watch it together even if we have to DVR it on watch on Friday night instead. I’m excited for the final season of The Office but I think my fav is Parks and Rec.

Also, love the navy and coral bedroom. Fab.

  3. nicky 09.21.2012

  4. Hayley 09.21.2012

We have a one year old australian labradoodle and i cannot recommend them enough! She doesn’t shed, which is awesome, but the best thing about her is how smart she is. Potty training was a breeze, obedience has been easy and fun. We have two little boys and she is awesome with them, too. She has never so much as growled at them. Labradoodles are seriously awesome dogs!!

  5. Those leather to suede boots are crazy! I didn’t know such a thing existed!

  6. Liz N 09.21.2012

I love your Favorite Fridays! I’m new to your blog, but I love your style. Everything on your list today is something I want!

  7. Centsational Girl 09.21.2012

Aw, so sweet of you to link to my girl’s coral/navy bedroom, I can’t tell you how delighted I was to see it pop up in my reader! You always have the best links on Fridays (hello fuzzy Labradoodle) and now I’m in need of the 5-4-3-2-1 workout pronto.
    xo and happy weekend!
    Kate
PS – Your cheeseburger quesadillas look ah-mazing. Which is why I’ll need that workout on repeat.

  8. Melissa 09.21.2012

Love your friday favorites! I can’t wait for the Big Bang theory either! I am going to have to try the 15 minute workout!

  9. I am totally into apple EVERYTHING as well!!! I made apple nachos that I found on pinterest for the potluck at work and it was a huge hit!! I feel like Fall and apples go together like mac n cheese or peanut butter and jelly.

  10. Sarah 09.21.2012

Have fun at the food festival! I saw a listing for that in a Midwest Living and I thought you would be going!

  11. Melissa in IA 09.21.2012

Okay, I’m drooling now! :) Love these favorites! Those chevron pumpkins are calling my name now…LOVE chevrons this year!!! Thanks for sharing!

  12. Steph 09.21.2012

    Loving your favorites this week!

Parks & Rec was hilarious last night – so excited for the rest of the season!

  13. Kelli 09.21.2012

Just be careful with any poodle mixes, as it’s a 50/50 chance as to which breed the dog will favor – the poodle or the other breed. So you could still have some shedding, allergy reactions, etc.

And please please PLEASE adopt from a rescue/shelter before going to a breeder. There are tons of perfect pups waiting for homes here, including poodle mixes. There are even some rescues devoted solely to them! Saving a life is so much better and economical than creating one and adding to pet overpopulation.

Plus, shelters and rescues give you the option to be exposed to a lot of different breeds and breed mixes so you can pick one that fits in most with your lifestyle. I love adult dogs for this reason – their temperaments are already solidified, so you know exactly what you’re getting!

I fostered my dog for my local shelter (my fourth foster) and ended up adopting him – he’s a love!

    • Susan 09.21.2012

Yes, please, please adopt from a shelter or rescue. I adopted both of my german shepherd mixes from a rescue and they are my everything. The best part about adopting from a rescue is if you find that the dog you adopted is not a good fit you can return the dog and they will try to find another dog that will fit your family.

  14. carrie 09.21.2012

Don’t buy! Adopt! So many wonderful animals need forever homes! Mutts are the best!

  15. Gabby 09.21.2012

I really hope you’d consider adopting or going to a reputable breeder rather than just buying a dog.

  16. Melissa 09.21.2012

I have a 20mth Goldendoodle. Best dog EVER. I know hubby loves English Bulldogs (we have one of those too) but I think you need a dog that will keep up with your active lifestyle ie a bigger dog without breathing and possible hip issues. Jack loves to go, go, go and is a walking/running machine.

  17. jordan 09.21.2012

The labradoodle you posted look so much like our mini goldendoodle puppy, Toby! He is a great dog! He is only 17 weeks old, but it has been going really well so far (and he barely sheds – probably less than we do!) :) I know some people don’t agree with getting dogs from breeders, but we did because we wanted to know exactly what we were getting, especially as first time dog owners. I know nothing is 100% guaranteed when it comes to temperament, shedding, etc. (whether from a breeder OR a shelter), but it worked out really well for us. Everyone has to choose the path that is right for them. Good luck if you decide to go for it!

  18. I have fallen behind a season or so on The Office — Parks & Rec TOTALLY has my heart!

Sooo much good stuff this week! That garlic pull apart bread looks INSANE. And the cinnamon swirl banana bread too, mmm!

  19. Life's a Bowl 09.21.2012

I’ve totally been MIA the past 3 months between switching jobs, getting married, and working my first trade show but it’s so nice to jump back into the blog world- especially on a Friday with all of your fabulous pins :D Have a wonderful weekend!!!

P.S. We have a toy poodle named Charlie and we’re in love <3 We'd like another, bigger, pup but have to wait until we move and have more space… We're thinking of a labradoodle!!!

  20. Alli 09.21.2012

Could not agree more about adopting rathering than buying!

  21. Rainey 09.21.2012

I am sooo excited for Big Bang, too! Awesome finds this week.

  22. Maria 09.21.2012

I came on here to urge you to adopt OR please find a REPUTABLE breeder – which means you go and visit their home and they interview YOU!

Please do NOT shop for a dog at a pet store. This is the worst thing you can do.

I see you have A LOT of pet rescue followers as well :)

  23. Dawn 09.21.2012

I totally have a pair of boots I was going to toss that could use that suede makeover! Learn something new every time I check out your page =)

  24. Hey I’m going to that food festival this Saturday! I’m from Omaha but visiting a friend there (we are doing the capital pursuit run in the morning). That’s the main reason why I clicked over on this post (should be doing homework…gah!) but I also like that hair idea. Will have to try it out!

Maybe we will see you?? Unless you are in some secret hidden judges booth lol!

  25. Elizabeth 09.21.2012

I am also looking forward to Big Bang Theory next week. It is one of my favorite shows.

  26. SaraJ 09.21.2012

I really hope I can make it to the World Food Fest tomorrow! We’ve been looking at puppies too I am loving the bernedoodles!

  27. Melissa 09.21.2012

So, I totally agree with everyone about adopting a dog. Or at the very least, do not buy from a pet store. They get their dogs from puppy mills which are basically puppy breeding farms with atrocious environments. You will just support them by buying one of their puppies.

On a completely different and random note….did you watch the Awkward episode after the season finale with all the cast??? Umm, I did not even recognize Jenna! She looks completely different all blonde and tan. And, I thought she was drunk or something at one point while watching it. I thought she was acting so weird! It may have ruined the show for me! ( You are the only other person I know who watches that show :)

  28. Laura 09.21.2012

There is waaaaay too much goodness in this post for me to comment on just one thing. BUT. Since I’m the always hungry pregnant lady…I’ll choose the cupcakes. ;)

  29. Lori 09.21.2012

Check out Tibetian Terriers- slightly smaller than a doodle, non-shedding with a wonderful soft fluffy coat and the most unreal temperment. They are such people lovers, it’s like having a furry toddler. We love ours so much!

  30. Bek @ Crave 09.21.2012

Omg that peanut butter cookie dough frosting and that brownie cake- I think I only ever comment on your sweet friday favourites- can you tell I love dessert and have a massive sweet tooth? Haha.

  31. Allison 09.21.2012

Love your Friday favorites! And the Labradoodle is so cute! But please consider rescuing instead of buying a breed. I am sure there is a dog out there, in a shelter or a foster home, that would love to be spoiled by you and your husband. : )

  32. Sherrill Yoder 09.21.2012

I am a guardian for an Australian Labradoodle and he is the most wonderful dog. (red as the one pictured) If you are within driving distance of Solon, IA you could also be a guardian home rather than buying. If you want to know more, let me know!

  33. Erika 09.21.2012

Just wondering what happened to the super cute picture of the Labradoodle?

    • Anne 09.25.2012

Me too! I hope it wasn’t removed because of the comments about adopting. You can still include the picture AND consider adopting instead of buying!

      • Iowa Girl Eats 09.26.2012

Oh no, I 100% believe in adopting. I got a few really nasty comments directed towards people who had already commented, which I removed, then just decided to remove the picture altogether. While I believe in adopting, I also believe that people have to the right to do whatever they want in regards to buying or adopting a dog (their life = their choice,) and didn’t want them being attacked on my blog simply for voicing their opinion.

  34. Kathleen Welch 09.22.2012

I look forward to your Friday Favorites. We love Big Bang Theory, agree….one of the best shows on TV. The cinnamon swirl banana bread is on my to do list this week. I have a seven year old that eats like a teenager ! I try to fill him up on healthy muffins and bread, this one fits the bill. Just picked up local, a mile down the road, apple cider yesterday….it is awesome and we look forward to it every year. Have fun at the food festival, that sounds awesome !

  35. Casey N. 09.22.2012

Please, please adopt from a local shelter. You will save two lives that day. The one you rescue, and the space left vacant for one more. I’m sure you and your husband will fall in love with a rescue. There are so many choices out there.

  36. Jenn Hanson 09.22.2012

Love this list! And I love that I just found your blog. I can’t wait to see what you post next. :)

    Have a great weekend!

    -Jenn

  37. I can’t even begin to tell you how many things you just made me want to do/cook/bake/buy. Pinning like crazy, thanks for all the great ideas!

  38. Pam O. 09.23.2012

The honey-chipotle meatballs turkey meatballs are excellent! My family enjoys them; I second your recommendation! :)

  39. Kelly Horsley 09.23.2012

I am loving your Friday Favorites! Love the Brownie Mountain cake. Can’t wait to try and make it!

  40. Trisha 09.23.2012

Another great installment! I working on my navy & coral spare bedroom plan right now… :)

  41. Kate 09.23.2012

Lol… I don’t think “belligerent” is the word you’re looking for in regards to Big Bang Theory. It means hostile & aggressive!!

  42. Libby Hinds 09.24.2012

Hi Kristin! I love your blog, and I make at least one of your recipes every week! I would also encourage you to adopt instead of buy a pet… I’ve done both and I will never buy one again! I have a labradoodle that I adopted from a rescue. He is the sweetest dog I’ve ever known. I also found a lab mix in the middle of the road in my neighborhood last year, and I am so happy that we kept him! i really think that my puppies somehow know that I rescued them! They are the best dogs. Just something to think about… I’ll still love your blog even if you do decide to buy a puppy :)

  43. Maria 09.25.2012

Thanks for featuring our peach almond muffins!! Love your Friday posts!
