You just made me “homesick” for Rome. We were stationed nearby for three years (2007-2010), with Rome only an hour-ish train ride for us, so we went often! The first time I saw the Colosseum was at night, and there is just no describing it! And the Fontana di Trevi was beyond gorgeous! We had so much fun, and can’t wait to go back one day!
As to the person who asked if it is safe at night, it is just like any other city. As long as you use common sense, it’s relatively safe, especially in the more tourist-frequented areas. However, even during the day, you want to keep your personal items on your body, and maintain a close eye. There is a lot of petty theft, but rarely any violence. The subway lines are the most likely for pickpockets, as well as the airport, and anywhere else there’s a decent crowd.
