I’ve been eating my weight in raw vegetables recently thanks to homemade, 5 ingredient Sour Cream and Chive Dip. This 5 ingredient sour cream dip recipe comes together in about 30 seconds and is deliciously cool, creamy, and full of chive flavor. It is SO addicting!
Something I always get a kick out of is ex-Iowans commenting on a post where I show either a HyVee or AE Dairy product telling me how much they miss them. I guess “kick” isn’t the right word because I feel for them – I really do – but I just so get it. There’s no better grocery store then HyVee and AE Dairy is known for their legendary sour cream-based dips, including Chive Dip. The only problem is that the dips aren’t gluten-free.
Enter my copycat recipes! Like I said, this dip calls for just 5 ingredients, and is perfectly satisfying.
Recipe Notes
- Use a sour cream that you like all on its own. That might seem like a given but I tested this dip recipe using a sour cream brand I’m not familiar with and didn’t love the outcome. Surprise, surprise, I like AE sour cream the best.
- Refrigerate the dip for at least 12 hours before eating as the flavors really do need time to meld.
- Don’t limit your dipping to just vegetables and chips – I added a dollop into Cameron’s taco bowl after getting a little too spice-crazy with my taco seasoning blend and it was delicious! I imagine a spoonful of Sour Cream and Chive Dip added to a bowl of chili or paired with smoked salmon and capers would be DIVINE.
Like I said, just one direction needed to make this recipe: stir stuff together in a bowl then refrigerate for at least 12 hours. Said stuff includes 16oz sour cream (again, be sure to use a sour cream that you like all on its own,) 3 Tablespoons chopped fresh chives, the green ends of 2 green onions that have been chopped, 2 teaspoons onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt.Â
Note: I think the real dip has way more salt then my recipe, so if you want more, add more. :)
Stir then refrigerate overnight, or longer, then serve with any and all vegetables or chips. I hope you love this EASY, creamy, totally delectable dip! Enjoy!

I love that this doesn’t have any junk in it!!!
Absolutely! I hope you love it, Melissa!
I just fixed this dip, worrying that I couldn’t let it chill 12 hours. If it tastes this good right after mixing, I can’t imagine what it will be like if 4, not to mention 12 hours. A+ recipe!
I just moved away from Iowa, and I am so, so homesick! Thanks for making this– I’m trying it tonight!
How do we make the AE party dip?
Hope you are doing well-haven’t seen any posts in awhile! I LOVE this dip, as do my hubs! Question can I sub. dried chopped chives? I have everything except those stinkers! Thanks! ?
Hmmm, I think you could? The chive flavor might not be as strong, is the only thing I can think of!
[…] Dressing, which has become our new obsession. You can also pair these with a sour cream dip like Sour Cream and Chive Dip  from Iowa Girl […]
Can you substitute Greek ff yogurt for the sour cream? That’s all we use now…
Thanks, cannot wait to try
Hi Tina! I’m not sure – I haven’t tried! I find the flavor of plain Greek yogurt is different enough from sour cream that I personally notice the difference in final products when swapped, but if you love the flavor it would probably taste good!
Seriously, I was born and raised in Iowa and I miss HyVee and AE Party Dip. Every. Day.
The struggle is reeeeeal!
I love that this dip can be used with SO much! All the vegetables, please!
Yes Ma’am!
My siblings and I grew up with our mom’s “Cottage Cheese Chive Dip” which is pretty much the same as yours except using cottage cheese instead of sour cream and putting it in the blender or a food processor – absolutely the best dip and fewer calories. Can blend with half of the chives and onions and then mix in the remaining chopped chives and onions. YUM!
Oh I love this idea!!! ??
My Mom used to use drained cottage cheese instead of ricotta in lasagna – love those classic cottage cheese swaps! ;)
Love that this is just five ingredients! And good call on using it as a dip or taco topper, etc. Can’t wait to try it!
I hope you love it, Carissa!
I don’t live in Council Bluffs anymore, but anytime my siblings and I return home to visit my parents, you bet there are many containers of toasted onion dip! And we each have chip preferences of course (wavy lays here, my sister likes Ruffles, and my aunt is a regular lays kind of lady), so my parents spoil us with our favorites! I don’t even wanna talk about how many we go through.
omg their toasted onion dip – SO good. I don’t blame you!!
