Caution: zero fun was had in the making of the Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs and Creepy Crawly Ice Cubes I’m sharing today to celebrate the countdown to Halloween. I repeat, ZERO FUN!
Ok busted, clearly we had a TON of fun, as evidenced by the giant chocolatey grin on the silly three year old in this photo, which matched the one on the other side of the camera…sans chocolatey grin, of course. I am a lady after all!
More lies.
Anyway, I am unusually excited to share these two cute and creepy Halloween treats with you today sponsored by Surf Sweets, an organically sweetened gummy candy line that’s free of high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, and the top ten allergens that’s available right at the regular grocery store. We LOVE playing with food at our house!
This is the first year Lincoln will be actively participating in trick or treating, which brings a whole new meaning to the word “EEK” as we think about navigating the world of TOT with a child with food allergies. In case you don’t know, Lincoln is allergic to dairy and although ingesting it thankfully doesn’t cause a life threatening reaction, projectile vomiting and hives are a great way to ruin a perfectly good Halloween (and adorable scarecrow costume!) That said, thanks to movements like the Teal Pumpkin Project and food allergy-safe product lines from companies like Surf Sweets, Ben and I, and the dozens of families we know with children with food allergies, can breathe a little easier this October 31st.
As a newly minted 3 year old, Lincoln is constantly asking to make “special projects” at home. Thankfully our Koala Crate subscription delivers 3-4 of them each month, but the rest is up to me, and guys? I’m just not a Pinterest Craft Mom. I’ve got a whole friggin’ board dedicated to toddler art projects but the closest I’ve come to completing any of them is, well…I’ll let you know when it happens.
When it comes to food related special projects, though? All over it. Lincoln and I have so much fun making smoothies, juicing, baking, mixing homemade gak together, and now we can add these allergy-friendly Halloween treats using Surf Sweets candy to the list. They were so much fun to make and eat and I know your family will love making them in the upcoming weeks leading up to Halloween too – Hocus Pocus marathon playing in the background because OBVIOUSLY!
First up are these Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs featuring Surf Sweets’ totally creepy spooky spiders (emphasis on the creepy part on account of our current 8-legged problem!) and cutie fruity bears!
As I mentioned, Surf Sweets candy can be found right at the regular and speciality grocery stores – they’re in the “health food” aisles of the regular grocery store – and for Halloween they offer a Trick or Treat Pack with individual sized pouches of fruity bears. Fun fact: each little pouch contains 100% of your daily vitamin C. Another fun fact: you can click here to download a $1 off coupon for any Surf Sweets product to use in the month of October!
I loved that the pouches only contain 5-6 bears which is enough to satisfy a sweet tooth and not too much for little ones.
We made both big and mini-sized spider webs on a silpat, wax paper, and parchment paper-lined half baking sheet to see which, if any, didn’t work when peeling the spider webs off once the chocolate was set. Thankfully all three options worked exactly the same.
To create the big Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs, arrange 9Â gluten-free pretzel sticks in a circle (I love Snyder’s GF pretzels,) and to make mini ones, which are perfect for tiny hands, snap 4 pretzel sticks in half then arrange in a circle.
Next melt 6oz white chocolate or dark chocolate chips in 30 second increments until smooth and melted, then transfer to a piping bag or ziplock bag and snip off the corner of the baggie.
Note: white chocolate is typically NOT dairy free, and the only gluten-free brand I found was Nestle, so I made half the webs with white chocolate chips to show a more “classic” spider web color, and the other half with Enjoy Life dark chocolate chips which are dairy and gluten-free.
Older kids can squeeze the melted chocolate into the centers of the pretzel circles, then start making circles that get a little bigger and bigger until you reach the ends of the pretzels.
While younger kids can pop a spooky spider into the centers of the big webs and a few fruity bears onto the mini spider webs, as if they’ve been caught by the spiders (Lincoln thought this was hilarious…)
And delicious!
Refrigerate the Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs until the chocolate has set then peel from the backing and dive in!

Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs
Description
Chocolate Pretzel Spider Webs are a fun activity for kids to help out with to celebrate Halloween!
Ingredients
- 8oz bag gluten-free pretzel sticks (I like Snyders)
- 12oz bag chocolate chips (white and/or dark chocolate - see note)
- Surf Sweets Spooky Spiders and Fruity Bears
Directions
- Arrange pretzel sticks in a circle (9 pretzel sticks for a large spider web, 4 pretzel sticks broken in half for a mini spider web,) on a silpat, wax paper, or parchment paper lined half baking sheet (make sure it will fit inside your refrigerator first!)
- Add half the chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl then microwave on full power in 30 second increments, stirring between increments, until fully melted. Transfer chocolate to a piping bag or small ziplock bag then snip off a corner. Fill the center of the pretzels circles with chocolate then carefully move in ever-growing circles to create webs. Gently place a spooky spider in the centers of the large webs and Fruity Bears in the centers of the small webs. Melt remaining chocolate if needed to create more chocolate pretzel spider webs.
- Refrigerate until chocolate is set then carefully peel back the silpat, wax or parchment paper and serve.
Notes
- Nestle white chocolate chips was the only brand I found at the grocery store to be gluten-free. Enjoy Life has delicious, top 8 allergen-free dark chocolate chips.

Next Lincoln and I made Creepy Crawly Ice Cubes which actually made me slightly gaggy just looking at them – PERFECT for Halloween! ?
For these ice cubes I used the spooky spiders and Surf Sweets’ Gummy Worms which again, have zero artificial colors or flavors, and are made in a top 10 allergen-free facility. Most importantly, they are so, so (SO) good!
You’ll need a standard-sized ice cube tray with spots for 16 ice cubes. To each ice cube add 1 spooky spider and 1 gummy worm, making sure to let the gummy worms hang over the sides a bit – totally creates an icky effect. Next fill the ice cube molds with 2 cups lemonade then freeze until solid.
EW!
Lincoln loves coconut water so I popped the ice cubes into a cup of that to keep the sugar count low, but you could add the Creepy Crawly Ice Cubes to you and/or your kids’ favorite drink before serving!

I hope you have as much fun as we did making these fun and festive, food allergy-friendly Halloween Treats, and be sure to enter the giveaway below so you can get a taste of yummy Surf Sweets candy yourself!!
I always try to buy trick-or-treat candy that I don’t like, so I won’t be tempted. But my favorite all-time candy is Peanut M&M’s. Have fun with your two littles and make wonderful memories!
These are too cute!
Skittles, mini kit kats, and gobstoppers are my favs!
I love the little mini Snickers bars!
It’s hard to choose just one! I’m a big fan of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Twix!
I grew up with a big intolerance to corn products. My mom was amazing finding ways for me to be included in everything from marshmallow roasting at Girl Scout camp (woohoo bananas wrapped in foil!) to beautiful birthday cakes with frosting that I couldn’t eat (decorating cardboard with a frosting Rainbow Brite, that could be lifted off when it was time to eat the cake). We laugh now that NOW products are clearly labeled as being free of corn syrup. I can’t wait to tell her about the Teal Pumpkin. I remember Trick or Treating and being SO excited when I went to the dentist’s house and got a toothbrush or the older lady who handed out pennies. At the night, my parents would take my candy and decide how much it equaled in money for the health food store. Then the next evening, they always took me to pick out some treats that I could eat, like carob peanut butter cups, natural licorice and yogurt covered raisins. Looking back on it now I’m so thankful for my parents extra effort. It wasn’t always fun or easy but I think my food intolerance has made me a bit more flexible about things in life. What a very cool post Kristin! I can’t wait to call my mom this afternoon and tell her thanks :D
Forgot my fave halloween candy! I love the surf sweets gummy worms or Justin’s PB cups.
I LOVE surf sweets and I’m so lucky my local whole foods carries a wide variety of their products- my husband filled my stocking with them at Christmas last year. It’s so hard to find candy that’s not full of artificial junk and actually tastes good so Surf Sweets is a lifesaver!
My favorite are carmel apple twizzlers. They are the only kind of twizzlers I will eat and you can only find them at Target at halloween.
Ooh it’s so hard to decide a favorite candy! I love milk duds in this mini yellow containers and sour patch kids!
Definitely going to make those spider webs with my daughter, and she would get a kick out of the ice cubes too so maybe we’ll try them as well! So hard to choose just one favorite Halloween candy (ugh, candy…love it and wish I didn’t!) but I think anything from the Reese’s line would take top place!
Candy corn — but would love to try some healthier treats! ;)
I like anything with dark chocolate!
I love all the candies ?
I love berry skittles too! And snickers!
These are so cute! My favorite is of course resee’s, along with everyone else in the world!
Mini mounds bars
Cute! The one-bite Snickers were always my favorite growing up.
Such a good idea for the kids with gluten allergies like my daughter! When I showed Leah she had a huge smile and said she LOVED them!
Very cute and easy ideas! So far we don’t have food allergies in our family (but do have antibiotic allergies) but this prize would be great for Halloween to offer our friends with allergies. Thanks!
