Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Smokey Mayo are crispy on the outside and packed with flavor. The caramelized onions and smokey mayo are not to be missed either!

I am on a burger ROLL!

Anyone else read that to the tune of, Let Me See That Tootsie ROLL? Just me? Bueller? #childofthe90s

Anyway I think this is going to be the summer of the burger. Even after recently posting Chipotle Cheddar Turkey Burgers with Avocado Crema and Peppercorn-Crusted BBQ-Ranch Burgers with Chili-Lime Crunchies, I couldn’t resist creating another burger recipe by mixing one of my favorite foods, Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummusinto lean ground beef patties then topping them with sweet-sticky caramelized onions and a thick schmear of homemade Smokey Mayo.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Burgers with Caramelized Onions and Smokey Mayo is my favorite burger combo yet!

Many of you know that I am obsessed with Sabra hummus, whom I created this burger recipe for, but perhaps you didn’t know to what extent. Yes, this is my hummus stash. I am not ashamed.

A friend texted me a picture of her half-eaten tub of hummus last week lamenting over the fact that she’d eaten half of it in one day. I sent her this pic with the caption, “I win.”

Everyone knows that hummus is awesome for dipping with fresh veggies, topping mini turkey meatloaves, and jazzing up plain crackers, but did you know it’s also unbelievable when mixed into plain ground beef and then grilled?

These burgers are the bomb.com. All you do is combine ground beef with Sabra’s Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, salt, and pepper, and then grill until the burgers are cooked through and have a nice crust on the outside. Fabulous. Then, THEN you top ‘em with sweet caramelized onions and a Smokey Mayo which is a cinch to make. I normally only use mayo when making my Mom’s Classic Potato Salad, but I made an exception for these burgers and I’m glad I did because this combination is absolutely killer. Since this is a cheese-less burger you can slather on the mayo with a little less guilt, too.

While it was tough to part with 1/2 cup of my favorite flavor of Sabra hummus for these burgers, it was well worth it. I have made these burgers twice in one week and can’t wait chow on ‘em again!

Start by making the caramelized onions. These burgers are good on their own but they’re GREAT when mixed with sweet caramelized onions.

Slice 1 jumbo sweet onion (like a Vidalia onion) then add to a large skillet over medium-heat with 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil and a dash of salt. Cook the onions, stirring every so often for 25-30 minutes or until they’re deep golden brown. MMMM. Set aside and don’t snack on ‘em too much. You won’t have any left for the burgers!

Next make the Smokey Mayo which is just 5 Tablespoons mayonnaise (I used light – use whatever you want but don’t use fat free. There’s nothing ok with FF mayo!) mixed with 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, and salt.

This is the smoked paprika I used, by the way. It is so incredible! Deeply smokey, it’s awesome in this mayo concoction and would also be great in a rib, chicken, or steak rub. If you can’t find smoked paprika, a teaspoon of chipotle in adobo sauce would work too.

Stir to combine then stash it in the fridge.

Burger time!

Add 1lb lean ground beef to large bowl then add 1/2 cup Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and lots of salt and pepper.

Next either crush 1-1/4 cups Rice Chex in a plastic bag with a rolling pin if you need a gluten-free bread crumb option, or measure out 1/2 cup + 2 Tablespoons panko bread crumbs. I actually LOVE the Chex in here because they get super crunchy on the outside of the burgers!

Add the crumbs to the meat then mix until just combined and form the mixture into 4 patties.

Grill for 3-4 minutes a side over medium-high heat then let rest for several minutes. Make sure you don’t flip until you have a nice crust on one side or the burgers can crumble. Give them time and you’ll be fine!

Pop the burgers onto grilled buns (Udi’s Gluten-Free Buns for me!) then pile high with baby spinach, tomato, the caramelized onions, and Smokey Mayo. Open wide!

Serves 4

Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 jumbo sweet onion
1lb lean ground beef
1/2 cup Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
1-1/4 cup Rice Chex, crushed OR 1/2 cup + 2 Tablespoons panko bread crumbs
lots of salt and pepper
4 buns
Toppings: baby spinach, tomato slices

For the Smokey Mayo:
5 Tablespoons mayonnaise
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
salt

Directions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat then add onions and a dash of salt. Cook, stirring every so often until onions reach a caramel brown color, 25-30 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Combine ingredients for the Smokey Mayo in a bowl then stir to combine and set aside in the fridge.
  3. Add ground beef, hummus, crushed chex or panko bread crumbs, salt, and pepper in a large bowl then combine with your hands and form mixture into 4 patties. Grill over medium-high heat on one side until a crust forms, 3-4 minutes, then flip and grill for 3-4 minutes on the other side. Do not undercook or burgers can be crumbly. Place burgers onto buns then add caramelized onions, Smokey Mayo, and additional toppings.

While the smokiness from the char of the grill plays wonderfully off the smoked paprika in the mayo, these burgers are a bit softer than your typical beef burgers, on account of the hummus, so they’d be great to cook in a skillet or grill pan indoors. No grill, no problem. Enjoy!

  2. Um. Whoa. THAT is what I call a burger! I love that you used chex mix and hummus! SO creative! I just started putting hummus on salad, so I think the next step is a burger!
And, smoked paprika is my life. Love this! Pinned!

Sabra’s roasted red pepper hummus is by far THE BEST hummus you can buy in a store. Mmmmmmm, these burgers sound like a dream!

  4. Ha! I couldn’t read through the rest of the post without humming the tootsie roll song. I probably would have gotten up to do the dance had it not been so early. After my coffee maybe…

  5. For the longest time I was so stubborn about trying hummus. Then I tried the Sabra brand and thought it was dynamic (my S-I-L) forced me.

And burgers…..every night. Grilling makes my husband feel so manly, I don’t want to take that from him.

  6. Loooove the look of this Kristin! I am obsessed with anything red pepper, hummus or caramelised onion! And this burger just sounds like perfection!

That is a SERIOUS hummus stash and I am sooo jealous! I pictured a very “drop the mic” kind of moment with the I win comment. Yes, Kristin, you definitely won!

Sabra is definitely my fav. Spicy Three Pepper for the win!

  9. Kelly Mitchem 06.18.2014

I love humus, could eat it all day every day!

  10. Sara W 06.18.2014

I personally love all of your burger posts because we bought half a beef from my cousin this year (grass fed deliciousness!) but I get tired of the same ole-I’m going to top these with grilled Walla Walla sweets (because I live in W2)

  11. Suzanne 06.18.2014

Did u find tasty gluten free buns?

  12. Sara Cobb 06.18.2014

I have turkey burgers on my menu tonight and am totally adding the hummus, onions, and smokey mayo to it (I LOVE hummus too and already conveniently have all the ingredients at my house). Such a great idea to add some crunch inside the burger. Love your stuff :)

  13. Wow, all of the components of this burger sounds like such a flavorful combo! I absolutely love caramelized onions! This burger looks so mouthwatering!

  14. Jackie 06.18.2014

    Genuine questions:

    1) How long does it take you to eat through that hummus stash?

    2) What else do you eat with hummus?

  15. Great idea with adding hummus to burgers! I have it on my to-do list of upcoming posts, but beware of the health effects of heating olive oil. I always recommend using coconut oil instead of ones that break down when heated.

  16. I never would have thought to mix hummus in with ground meat–brilliant!

  17. Pamela 06.18.2014

What kind of buns did you use? They look fantastic in your photos!

    • Kari S. 06.18.2014

She stated what kind in the post Pamela ;)

      • suznne 06.18.2014

Thanks!! I missed the bun type on my read through of the receipt :-)

  18. eat good 4 life 06.18.2014

Wow these look delish. I am in love with the roasted pepper hummus in this.

  19. Well hey now! If there is a burger throw down and I had to go up against you, I’d be very nervous about you opening a can of burger whoop a** on me. Outstanding looking burger – well done!

  20. Melony 06.18.2014

These look amazing! I can’t wait to try them. Sabra roasted red pepper hummus is the best–though I sometimes have a hard time finding it up here. Next time I do these burgers will be on the menu :)

  21. Girl! I have totally been on a burger bash lately too! This one totally looks like it would hit the spot, love the hummus addition, genius!

  22. I would never have thought of adding hummus to ground beef. This burger just seems so right. I cannot wait to try it the next time we have burgers.

  23. Jennifer 06.19.2014

LOVE the idea of Rice Chex for bread crumbs substitute! Husband is GF (so that means the rest of us are, too!) and toasting and crumbling Udi’s just doesn’t work as well as I’d like. Burgers look divine – will try tonight.

  24. Jessica 06.19.2014

Totally agree that this is the summer of burgers – I’ve been experimenting with quinoa burgers lately! I also share your passion for hummus. Have you ever tried it on a grilled cheese? With veggies? SO good!

    Go hawks! :)

Ummm yeah…went out to HyVee and got everything to make this for dinner tonight. I showed my husband this last night and he kind of freaked. So excited :)

  27. Kristen 06.22.2014

This was terrific, thank you so much for the idea! I make my own hummus — love the idea of adding it to a burger, especially when we use lean meat.

  28. Alysha 06.30.2014

I just made this recipe and OH MY YUM!! Even my mom who thinks that my hummus addiction is kind of weird loved these burgers!! Thanks for the recipe!

  29. Tina 07.01.2014

I love this burger! Made it the other night for supper and it was a hit for both my husband and me. Our children, not so much, but they just aren’t into trying new things with an open mind. There’s one leftover burger and I am going to wait until my husband goes running tonight to whip up some caramelized onions to eat with it (I don’t want him to think he gets the last one!)

  30. Roasted Red Pepper Hummus is my absolutely favourite and served with a burger??!! This looks heavenly – printed and pinned :)

  31. Victoria 07.10.2014

I’ve been drooling over this burger since you posted this and just made them last night. They are AMAZING! The best burgers I’ve ever made. I love the flavor the hummus adds and the chex mix adds a nice crunch factor.
I’ve been following your blog for a couple of years now and I love every recipe that you post. Thank you for sharing with us your delicious recipes!

    These burgers were AMAZING! YUM!

  33. Jessica 07.17.2014

I just came to get this recipe for the second time in two weeks. :) My husband is not as big of a hummus fan as I am, but he RAVED about these when I made them the first time and asked for them again. He loved the burgers with the avocado crema, too. He gets really excited when I say I’m making one of your recipes!
