Stovetop Apple Crisp for Two
Stovetop Apple Crisp for Two is my answer to the single serving mug cake that never turns out quite right.
If it’s not too eggy, it’s too spongy, doesn’t translate using GF flour, or calls for like, double checking my microwave’s wattage.
Cake is supposed to lower my stress levels, not increase them.

That said, I’m sticking to the stovetop and this perfectly portioned dessert that makes just enough to share when a craving for apple crisp hits.
Did I mention you don’t even need to turn on the oven?!

How to Make Stovetop Apple Crisp for Two
Step 1: Make the crisp topping.
The crisp topping is ridiculously easy — it’s basically homemade skillet granola, and if you happen to eat half of it while waiting for the apples to cook I would completely understand (and totally relate).
Add butter, brown sugar, pure maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt to a medium-sized skillet then stir until melted and bubbly. Add old fashioned oats plus sliced almonds then cook, stirring often, especially near the end, until the topping is very fragrant and slightly toasted, 4-5 minutes.
Scrape the topping onto a piece of parchment paper or a silpat then set aside to cool.

Crispy, crunchy, perfectly sweet topping = DONE!

Step 2: Saute the apples.
To the same skillet add butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon then stir until melted and bubbly. Add Granny Smith apples that have been peeled then cut into bite-sized pieces then turn the heat down just a touch and saute for 2 minutes. Place a lid on the skillet then continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender but still have a little bite, 3-5 minutes.
This recipe is all about using what you’ve got to satisfy a serious and sudden apple crisp craving, so really any apple will do. That said, I like the aforementioned Granny Smith apples, Jonagold, or Honeycrisp apples.

Last step is to scoop the apples into a bowl then top with the crisp topping and a scoop of ice cream or dollop of whipped cream before diving in. I hope you LOVE this quick and easy, totally scrumptious Stovetop Apple Crisp for Two the next time a craving hits!

I wanted to come and report in that this was a HUGE hit with my family!
Yessss, thank so much for leaving feedback, Brooke! I’m so glad you guys loved it!!
LOL i’m torn between loving you AND hating you because I have no pregnancy-cravings to excuse what would probably happen when I make this! Apple + cinnamon = flavour combo from heaven AND there’s oats, which are one of my fave things in the world!!
Long-time reader, I think first time commenter. This is so delicious, I’m sorry we don’t have a whole pan!! My three year old said “we’ll be making this again, right mommy?” Definitely!
Awww – so glad it was a hit with you guys! Thanks so much for leaving feedback, Sarah!
This looks delicious and I love that it is a smaller recipe for two people. I always end up making a giant pan of desserts and they never get eaten! Thanks for sharing!
This looks scrumptious! Another week, another IGE recipe or two that’ll get prepared. This weekend I’m trying your Italian Sausage veg soup or your Restaurant-Style Chicken Tortilla Soup – need one ingredient for each of them, so it’s a tossup. Last night we had your Easy Chicken and Rice soup and I don’t care for soup … but it was delish even though I had to cut the oil out and used brown rice for our foodplan.
It’s to the point now at dinner that I tell my hubby that it’s “another of the Iowa Girl Eats recipes!” We make probably 20-25 of your dinners recipes. Thank you!
I love it, Bonnie!! I’m so, so glad you both like the recipes – you’ll have to let me know what you think of the crisp!
This looks delicious! I think I will try it tomorrow night now that it finally seems more like fall here. Thanks for sharing!
this looks so amazingly delicious and so easy!! I cannot wait to make this! Pinned it, too! Thanks for sharing!
This is totally acceptable to have for breakfast, too, right? I mean, it has oats and apples and almonds, so I’m thinking it’s ok. ;)
Love this idea! Totally giving it a go after apple picking this weekend.
I like where your head’s at, Lindsay! ;)
GIRL! I’m 26 weeks pregnant and have been craving apple crisp like nobody’s business. I actually hit the point on Monday of ALMOST making it but decided I didn’t have it in me after a full day at work + cooking dinner. So my sweet husband made baked apples with vanilla ice cream, which hit the spot… UNTIL NOW. I couldn’t have clicked your link fast enough when I saw the words “stovetop” and “apple crisp” – this is going down tonight, and I am SO happy!
HAHA – I clearly feel your pain!! Congrats, girl, and enjoy!!! :D
hahahha your single serving mug cake bit made me LOL. I thought I was the only food blogger that didn’t have a clue what their microwave’s wattage was and couldn’t manage to stir 3 ingredients in a mug and it turn out correctly LOL
Literally have never had ONE single mug cake come close to being edible!
This looks amazing!!! I can’t wait to try it!
I think you’re speaking my love language! I can’t wait to make this tonight!
For 2, or possibly just one if no one is around to help me! Yum
Seeeriously… ;)
