I’ve got the cutest little Valentine’s Day treat to share with you which calls us to all channel our inner Sandra Lee. Brownie Mix Truffles are so sweet and simple, I can hardly even stand it!
Brownie Mix Truffles are, you guessed it, chocolate truffles made from a brownie mix which you bake, fluff, roll, and then dunk in melted chocolate. If chocolate dipping isn’t your bag (trust me, it didn’t used to be mine either!) roll these truffles in powdered sugar for a sweet, professional look.
The result is a super-dense, thick, and fudgy truffle that nobody would guess started out as baked brownies. If you’re anything like me though, instead of letting the recipient of said truffles think you perfected the art of melting chocolate, butter, and cream together, you’ll tell them, HaHA, guess what?? It took nearly no skill to make these! No really, they’re made from a boxed brownie mix!!” Kind of like how I can’t stop telling people how cheap something is when they compliment me on it.

At any rate, Brownie Mix Truffles can be made several days in advance, and would be the most adorable Valentine’s Day gift for your sweetie, kids, co-workers, or kids’ teachers. They can be packaged in so many cute ways too, like popping the truffles into mini cupcake wrappers then nestling in festive tins. I picked this one up for $.99 at Michaels (the craft store, ya’ll) the other day!
K, first things fits, bake a box of brownie mix according to package directions. Any kind that has the word “fudge” in the name will do. You can also use my irresistible Gluten Free Brownies recipe!
Oh! Don’t be tempted to swap out the oil or butter called for on the box for applesauce or yogurt to make it low-fat. This results in a fluffy, cake-like brownie, which won’t stick together. We want dense and FUDGEY brownies!
Let the brownies cool completely (you could bake them a day ahead of time) then cut off the edges which are hard and crispy. I like to freeze them for an emergency chocolate stash!
Next, use a fork to fluff the brownies all the way down the pan.
Now use a cookie scoop or two spoons to scoop out 1 Tablespoon brownie and roll into a ball. Place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet and continue on with the rest of the brownies.
You’ll get about 3 dozen when all is said and done.
Ok, time to melt the chocolate to dip the brownie mix truffles in! Like I said, I used to be the hottest mess when trying to melt chocolate, until I started using Baker’s chocolate. It melts like a dream. Add 6oz each white and semi-sweet chocolate into separate microwave safe bowls then nuke for 1 minute and stir. Microwave in 20 second increments after that, stirring in between increments, until the chocolate is nice and smooth.
Drop the truffles into the chocolate then use two forks to transfer it back and forth a couple times, letting the excess chocolate drip off.
Transfer the truffle back to the waxed paper, then srinkle with festive nonperils and embellishments. I got a big pack of these at Michaels too!
I also tried my hand at making brownie mix truffle pops. It wasn’t too hard, actually! Just freeze the truffles with a cake pop stick (found in craft stores and Bed, Bath & Beyond) for 15 minutes then dunk in the melted chocolate. Use the holes in a colander to hold them up while they set.
Pop the truffles into the refrigerator until hardened, then package and present!

Brownie Mix Truffles
Description
Brownie Mix Truffles are festive, sweet, and super easy. Make and package then give to your loved ones!
Ingredients
- 1 box fudge brownie mix + ingredients on back of box OR homemade Gluten Free Brownies (see notes)
- 12oz Baker's chocolate (6oz each semi-sweet and white)
- sprinkles/embellishments
Directions
- Bake brownies according to directions then cool completely. Do not overbake or sub out oil to make brownies low far or they will not stick together. Cut off edges then fluff cooked brownies with a fork. Scoop out brownies by the Tablespoon then roll into a balls and place on baking sheets lined with wax paper.
- Add chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl just big enough to hold it (makes for easier dipping) then microwave for 1 minute and stir. Microwave in 20 second increments, stirring between increments, until chocolate is melted. Dip brownie truffles in chocolate then transfer between two forks to let excess chocolate drip off. Transfer back to wax paper then add embellishments on top. Place into refrigerator to harden then package. Store on the counter or in the fridge.

do i have to use the bakers chocolate, or can i use melted chocolate chips?

I think Baker’s chocolate melts much smoother, but you could definitely try with chocolate chips. I’d add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil to help smooth it out.

I love this recipe. What a clever idea. I’m planning to make these for the office this week. After comparing the price of a 12 oz bag of regular choc chips to the price of two bricks of the Baker’s choc (about a $5 price difference), I am going to try my hand with melting regular choc chips…. It’s either gonna be a hot mess or awesome! I’ve had major trouble in the past with regular choc chips, too; the melting method is so important. Hope mine turn out as good as yours!

I’ve visited your blog like 3 times since you posted this and after seeing the fudgy delightfulness I’ve forced myself to turn away each time. (I’m in the beginning stages of weight loss you see.) But the temptation was too much and I caved in and read it. Just as I had predicted I’m about ready to drop everything to make these little suckers. If I’m strong enough I can hold out until Valentine’s day… A.K.A. free day.
