Large Batch Homemade Taco Seasoning is a cinch to prepare and ready when you are for taco night! Free from gluten, artificial colors, and preservatives.

“We re-make this again and again. Used weekly in our house!”
Thought I’d hare a little kitchen/life hack with you today – Large Batch Homemade Taco Seasoning.
Since the majority of store-bought taco seasoning mixes include thickeners, which can contain gluten, I’ve been making my own single-serving homemade taco seasoning for the last several years.
Recently, though, I realized I could save a ton of time if I didn’t have to take out 8 spice jars every time we have taco night and thus, Large Batch Homemade Taco Seasoning was born!

Gluten, Dairy, Thickener and Preservative FREE
I mixed and multiplied until the flavors were just right, and now have a HIUGE jar of pre-made homemade taco seasoning mix that’s not only gluten free, but free of artificial colors, flavors, and anti-caking agents, too. Plus it’s preservative-free.
You know what we call that? An UPGRADE!

All you have to do is add spice cupboard staples to a jar, then shake it up. I love using mason jars, but a pyrex glass container or Tupperware container works great too.

Ingredients Needed
- Chili powder
- Cumin
- Salt
- Pepper
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Dried oregano
That’s it! Shake, shake, shake.

How to Use It
To use the seasoning mix, brown 1lb ground meat then add 2 – 2-1/2 Tablespoons seasoning with 1/3 cup broth or water, then simmer until the liquid has thickened and reduced, 1-2 minutes. Easy. As. That.
Enjoy this little way to make life a lot easier!

I added a pinch of cinnamon to deepen the flavor profile. Thanks for the great recipe:)
Sounds delish!
I love this idea. As an IBS person, I can leave out the garlic and onion, which are IBS triggers, and still have the chili powder and other Mexican flavors. Thanks for this hack.
Hi,
When you list chili powder as an ingredient, do you mean chili powder as in the seasoned powder you would by for a chilli recipe or ground chilli peppers with no extra seasoning?
Hi Robin! The first one – I use Tone’s Mild Chili Powder. :) https://tones.com/product/mild-chili-powder/
I have not made this yet but plan on it later today. I am on the path of losing weight. My husband & I are also truck drivers. I cook most of our food and take with us on the truck. However there are sometimes we may run out so I keep a stock of basic spices on my truck. This will come in handy when we stop to pick up ground turkey and make turkey tacos in my rice/multi cooker. Thanks for this spice option, itโs inexpensive to make and I control the amount of sodium in it. WIN WIN!! THANKS!!!
Wohoo! Yes, you got it, Jo!
This has been my go to for a couple of years now. Beats the hell out of the store bought crap that has MSG and Jack’s up your blood pressure.
For sure! My husband has to watch his salt intake – it’s shocking how much salt is in prepackaged products. Thank you so much for your feedback and recipe rating!
I love this mix for tacos. Wondering what you might add/subtract to make a chili mix? Thanks
Great recipe for Taco Seasoning. Saves a ton of money, limits sodium intake and i am able to tweak the spiciness. Winner.
I live alone. The ingredients for Taco Seasoning would be quite expensive for me to buy. I also wonder how long the shelve life would be. ??
Here’s a single serving recipe for you, Diane! https://iowagirleats.com/low-carb-taco-boats/
Diane, do you have a store (like Winco Foods) near you that has a great bulk section? Spices are so much cheaper bought that way. At Winco you can buy as little as you need.
This is my go to taco seasoning! I have made it countless times and always have it on hand. So much better than store bought, and way less sodium!
We re-make this again and again. Used weekly in our house!
What size jar do you store it in?? I love this recipe!!
Love this recipe. Great flavor and no sugar. Thanks for sharing.
How many tablespoons is the entire batch? Looking to make tacos for 200 people (grad party), wondering about making my own seasoning and trying to do a cost analysis.
Hi Ruth! The recipe makes ~1 cup, which is enough for 8lbs of meat.
