Enjoy your Thanksgiving! I get to bring Sweet Potato Casserole and Pumpkin Angel Food Cake. I cannot wait to chow down.
Lexi 11.24.2010
I am assigned the rolls too. However, I usually don’t make it home from the bars and friends’ houses until mid morning so my mom usually ends up making them anyway. I don’t want to grow up!!!!
Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) 11.24.2010
I’m bringing brussels sprouts with grapes (my “new” tradition) as well as baklava (untraditional!) for dessert :)
and we usually watch the parade in the morning, then go to my aunt’s house around 1 and eat “dinner” around 2!

My mother-in-law asked me to bring rolls too! I can relate to wanting to find the best roll recipe ever just to have the chance to compete on the fabulous Thanksgiving table she puts together! So, I made these Knittle Rolls that I learned how to make at a cooking class at Living History Farms. The instructor had made them so many times, she just rattled the recipe off the top of her head. I also found the recipe online. Scroll to the bottom of the page in the link below and look for “Knittle Bread.”
PS – It does take most of a day to make, but is worth it. I made mine ahead of time and froze them. Planning to just warm them in the oven when we get to my mother-in-law’s place.
Happy Thanksgiving!

My mom makes the BEST breakfast strata ever. I don’t have her exact recipe, but this looks like it’s probably about the same. AND I bet using your trick of adding a few dashes of tabasco to the eggs would really kick it up a notch. Enjoy!

I made this French Toast Casserole w/ praline topping by Paula Deen for a baby shower brunch I hosted one time and it was DIVINE. AND, you can go lighter on the heavy stuff…Paula overdoes it sometimes – okay, most of the time! Here’s the link: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/baked-french-toast-casserole-with-maple-syrup-recipe2/index.html . Happy Thanksgiving!

I’ve made this one before too & it is AWESOME!

I love Pioneer Woman’s buttered rosemary rolls – they’re super easy, were a hit at Thanksgiving last year, and a new tradition! http://thepioneerwoman.com/tasty-kitchen/recipes/breads/buttered-rosemary-rolls/
I travel to see my family for Christmas, but it’s too far to go for Thanksgiving too. So, I typically join friends or invite them to my place for dinner – bacon-wrapped turkey breast is on the menu, along with roasted garlic smashed potatoes and green beans with a mustard vinaigrette. But regardless of who I’m with or what we’re eating, the Macy’s parade and Lions game can’t be missed!

no no no. the onnnnly breakfast casserole recipe is my momma’s. i only speak the truth, and i almost don’t want to give out the recipe…but i love your writing and energy so i am sharing it with you….it’s your early xmas gift ;)
16 slices white bread
diced ham–enough for 2 layers of casserole
1/4 lb. grated cheddar
1/2 lb grated swiss
6 eggs
3 c milk
heaping T. dried onion flakes, plus a pinch salt over 1st and 2nd layer
1/2 t. dry mustard for each layer
3 c. crushed corn flakes (8 ounce box) and 1/4 c. melted butter
trim bread and cut into halves. dice ham. Grease 9×13 pan. 1st layer (bottom)–bread to cover bottom of pan, then layer ham and cheeses on top of the bread. repeat layer 2x. Combine milk, eggs, and seasoning. Pour over top of casserole and refrigerate overnight.
Take out of refrigerator 1/2 hour before baking. Bake 40 minutes at 375. Crush corn flakes and spread over top, drip butter over top.
trust me. best. thing. ever.

Heehee, that reminded me of the Friends episode where Phoebe got assigned ice for a party…so she did like 8 kinds of ice and a snowcone machine and upstaged Monica!
I’m doing a pineapple sweet potato casserole this year, it really is best to leave everything else to the mama!
Alicia 11.23.2010
For one side of the family I am taking a corn casserole and a pecan pie. For the other, I will be taking a Maple Pumpkin Pie with Pecan Streusel and Sweet Potatoe balls.
Alison 11.23.2010
Just thought I’d give a shout out because I hear ya girl…This happened to me too! It must be an Iowa mom thing…AND I also got stuck with breakfast in addition to an appetizer. I’m doing mini quiche in muffin tins…app is yet to be determined… good luck selecting the rolls. ;)
JennyV 11.23.2010
1. I’m making NOTHING — I’ve asked and asked the hostess what I can bring and she’s assured me I cannot bring anything other than my appetite :) Lucky me (and hubby!)
2. Thanksgiving Tradition — TurkeyTrot! We always did a family 5k until my parents moved to a new community where there wasn’t a local race… so we made up our own run and had a blast on a trail together :)
A couple great recipes:
Sausage Breakfast Casserole (this is coming from a girl who despises most every sausage she’s ever tried!)
1 lb sausage browned/drained (breakfast pork sausage)
3 C seasoned croutons

3 C milk
1 can mushrooms sliced (could use fresh!)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
2 C shredded cheddar cheese
Directions:
Layer crotons on bottom of 9×13 pan
Layer browned, drained sausage
Add on the mushrooms
Add eggs, soup mushroom mixtures on top
Top with cheese
Refrigerate overnight
Bake 50-60 min @ 350 degrees
Ham, Cheese, Broccoli Brunch

i’m making cranberry sauce (2 kinds- a relish & a cook on the stove) and pumpkin brownies. they are DELISH! and smell so good :)
Allison @ thesundayflog 11.23.2010
What if u brought biscuits instead? Martha has a mean maple thyme biscuit recipe that I swear by. As for casserole, my mom layer thick slices of French bread in a casserole dish and covers it with a combo of eggs, milk, ham, asparagus, cheese and spices. Then bakes it so it turns into an egg like French toast. It’s amazing!!!! Let me know if u want the recipe – I’m sure she has it!!

The best rolls of all time are King’s Hawaiian Rolls. You can find them at Hy-Vee. They are really sweet, you might need to buy double so everyone can have at least 2, they are THAT good!
Daisy 11.23.2010
okay, my mom and I had a scary similar convo. it was basically the same as your but revolved around pumpkin bread. gotta love Mom’s (who are awesome cooks!)
Kris 11.23.2010
Hi! That looks like a glorious garage to park in! I found these honey yeast rolls that look to die for!
This year I’m eating at my boyfriend’s family’s house for Turkey Day, then traveling up to NW Iowa. So this year I’ll just be making corn dip, however, my boyfriend is making anoher apple pie. He made one last year that was really good and wants to give it another whirl.
Happy T-Day!
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) 11.23.2010
Ha, ha! I’m bringing rolls to our Thanksgiving. I like making breads though, so I don’t mind.
What a nice, spic ‘n’ span garage–good work, Ben!
kate 11.23.2010
Haha, rolls are kinda lame but you get to make a few other fun things too!
